upper class not as cool as you think maybe during teen years but after that it sucks
    >> Anonymous 11/06/08(Thu)23:44:59 No.2050743
I don't know what upper class is exactly, but my dad makes about 400,000 a year plus bonuses. He only went to 4 years worth of engineering school but he's done really well for himself.

We live at the end of our means even though we make so much money. My brother and i both go to private college, my house is worth about a million dollars, & my mom does absolutely nothing but cook and waste my dad's money on italian designers.

They constantly complain about money all of the time yet my dad drives a brand new 330 ci convertible, my mom has 15,000 dollars worth of coats in her closet & we just spend a shitload of money redoing our basement and front lawn.

My parents pay for my college, but everything else I pay for. car, insurance, gas, all my discretionary spending. My dad's job is all but secure for the next 7 years (until he's ready to retire)

    What's your dad do specifically?

Do you think about the same things that people from poorer families think about?

I grew up rich and I turned out cynical, jaded, and lacking any passion or motivation to actually accomplish anything because I'll never know--or have to know-- what it's like to have to actually work for something. Grass is always greener, etc.

BMW's are upper-middle class at best. Get back to me after you pay cash for a Rolls Royce.

400k isn't really upper class - more like upper middle. Most households with two senior professionals would be around 300-400k.

When I think upper class, I think rich enough to live purely off of investments.

I'm the same OP. As soon as my dad started making money, I lost a will to do anything.

In 95% of the US, 400k a year is upper class. It might be upper-middle in certain areas of the East Coast and California, but anywhere else and you're living in a fucking palace with servants and a 4 car garage.

    400,000 is upper class

My parents make 125,000 a year, and we are upper-middle class.

bmw 3 and 5 are upper middle. 6, 7 series are upper class

    >>2050908
No, you're middle-middle class. Unless you mean they make that much each, which might make it an upper middle household.

Upper class means being fucking RICH, not just a well off professional.

I feel like every moment of my life should be captured and used as a stock photo.

I also feel like the guy dressed in a cashmere sports jacket at a party he didn't realize was supposed to be informal.

Sometimes it's not a bad feeling, but most of the time I feel like an asshole.
    >> Anonymous 11/07/08(Fri)00:07:36 No.2050953
ProTip: almost no one will admit to being "upper class," no matter how wealthy they are. As long as you still have to work at a job and there exist things which you want which you can't necessarily afford, you will consider yourself to be upper-middle class, even if you're earning a shit-ton of money.
    >> Anonymous 11/07/08(Fri)00:07:40 No.2050956
Just everyone ITT understand that we impose these ridiculous value and class structures on ourselves. It should be irrelevant in evaluating your lives. End of story. Renounce irrelevant ideology.

I'm going to use the money in my trust fund to build myself a house on the property of some family friends in the Appalachian Mountains once I graduate from my private liberal arts university with a degree in English Literature.
I'm going to hunt and forage for food, take my budding library of books with me, and read/think/write.

How does my choice make you feel?
    >> Anonymous 11/07/08(Fri)00:16:23 No.2051036
My dad makes about $250,000. He is the Vice President of a large commercial landscaping company. He likes to pretend he is poor though, and has largely been a deadbeat. Now that my little sister is 18 and in college, he can no longer claim either of us as tax exemptions. He just moved into a $600,000, 5-bedroom house with just his British girlfriend (who drives a jag and works as a consultant for BP) and his dog. He still pretends like he can't afford to contribute to helping me go to a cheap community college. And he spends more money on paying his high priced attorney than actually providing for his children.

Meanwhile I am trying with extreme fervor and maybe slightly destroying my mental health to be top in the field I plan to go into so that I can make enough money to never have to depend on my poor mother again and some day pay her back for all she has provided to me, unlike my father...
