So, after finally watching this movie I've lost all faith in Critics everywhere. I didn't go see this because of how every single review said it was terrible. Now I pick it up and watch it and find quite a damn good movie. Serves me right. What does /tv/ think?

THIS WAS QUITE THE EPILEPTIC OVERSATURATED COLOR SHINY CGI SEIZUREFEST IN IMAX

it is not dark enough. There is no emotional distress or insane manic in the movie like the dark knight. Being bright, light heart, and heart warming just don't cut it with today's dark Hollywood.

this is how critics view a film:

If its artsy fartsy and makes no sense at all but its directed by a well known director, then the film was genius.

If its artsy fartsy and makes no sense at all and its directed by an unkown director, then the film is terrible and makes no sense.

I watched this on Bluray recently and yeah, I really enjoyed it.

Just a fun movie, I didn't expect anything more.

    How did it look?
    >> Anonymous 09/20/08(Sat)04:46 No.1863911
Dialogue was dull, always and there was far too much of it. Camera 1, camera 2, camera 1, camera 2, camera 1, camera 2. I can usually forgive that if what they're saying is interesting, but this is Speed Racer lol.

Acting was up to anime standards (mediocre) so I probably shouldn't hold that against the film.

The boy and the monkey were fucking useless annoyances, canon or not.

The races however were quite nice and brilliantly presented. I even enjoyed the constant facewipes from scene to scene.

2 1/2 out of 5 is an accurate analysis of the film though anything less is understandable and anything more is a stretch of ignorance.

Ohfuck. I think it beat Sunshine for my most HOLYFUCKWOW gorgeous movie. It beating Sunshine says a hell of a lot, that is one nice looking movie.

I just didn't notice a single iffy spot the whole movie, everything is so goddamn crisp.

Speed Racer was amazing. Most impressive thing ever on a good cinema setup.

Well, the cartoon it is based on is a cheesy kids movie.
The movie adaptation is, as to be expected, a family kids movie.

My point is just that, it is loyal to it's source.
It is a bad movie, yes.
It is a bad kids movie, no.
It is a very good adaptation, yes.

Loved this movie, but I hated every scene with Chim Chim and Spritle, jesus fucking christ they were annoying.

Every scene with them, and the scene with Pops spinning that ninja around made me cringe, but other than that, I fucking loved it.

But I kinda wanted to hear, at some point: "Little does Speed Racer know that Racer X is actually his brother Rex Racer!" etc. etc.

    But meh, still great though.
    >> Anonymous 09/20/08(Sat)12:26 No.1864891
Pretty much the only reason I want to see this movie is to watch John Goodman spin people around over his head.

I used to watch the old Mach Go Go Go anime just because it was so bad, it was almost good.

In other words, you never watched it as a kid.

Incorrect, sir. I watched it largely because most other shows in the same time slot in my area were worse. However, I did appreciate its significance as one of the first examples of anime to make its way to the American mainstream. Sure, the dubbing was awful, but how could you not like Snake Oiler and his car acrobatics team? And what about Inspector Detector?

No sir. I watched every episode at least 3 times. But I'm honest enough with myself to admit that just because I like something, doesn't make it great.
I just happen to like campy old 'toons.

When I saw the trailer for the movie, I was struck by how faithfully the cheese was recreated. I'll reitterate that John Goodman as Pops racer is what makes me want to see this movie.

Pic fairly related. -Hey! The feather fell out of Captain Terror's cowl!

The climax? Holy shit. Speed found out racing was rigged so he made racing his bitch.

If you're looking at it from a kid's perspective, it's a fun movie with awesome action scenes separated by long boring bits of dialogue concerning the stock market and who cares about blah blah blah...

From a different perspective, it's colorful to the point where you have no clue what the hell the Wachowskis were up to, and the message undermines the whole thing. And no, I don't mean the crazy anti-corporate message, woo.
    >> Anonymous 09/20/08(Sat)19:27 No.1866596
The shit-talking, the checkerboard spiral, the EXPLOSIONS, Giacchino's SCORE. FUCK. It's stunning.

This should've been the most successful kid's movie ever. Shit, it's a great family movie. It's goofy as hell too. It's got VIKING racers who are bribed with FUR and they LOVE it so much they rub it against their faces. WTF.

    Plus: beehives.

If you love fun you oughtta love this movie.
