It wasn't so much a rushed plot, but more of a 'we're gonna dump you right into the middle of everything' which I felt kind of lent a sense of reality to the whole thing.

I don't think it was trying to be scary. How was it not an action movie? There were plenty of action themes that worked very well in it. Not sure what you mean by it trying to be clever.

Well yeah, they're thugs, but even then they all go through moments of emotional insecurity. Plenty of sympathy in the movie. Also most of the main cast are pot-heads. You expect them to the most likable, highly intelligent, upright citizens?

well traditionally the "bmovie" or alien film genre relies upon the audience both cheering and sympathising with the main protagonists, thats why the kids vs the aliens sub genre is quite strong and has had revivals every decade or so (just look at this and clover field).
but with this, right from the get go you hate these characters for what they do to sam, you sympathise far more with her after all. yet when you begin to scratch the surface of the characters, the setting in which they live and access the events and people who led them to where they are, you begin to see them as something other than a nightmare.

    ok what did you expect?
this is an alien action film with a hint of comedy.
it needs cliches in order to not only function but exist. its not going to be a hard hitting drama which portrays the youth in such a light that you examine their lives. but you cant say it didnt show a different side of the thugs. of course it did, for one thing the fucking film begins with them mugging a lady, this is the generic image of kids on the block. from then on, the film slowly undermines them with their stupid reactions to the aliens.

if you were expecting for them to be redeemed by saving the aliens than you expected the wrong film. if anything having the boys all of a sudden turn into martyrs for the people of london would have been too unbelievable for the characters. even for a film about aliens.

also btw this film made a greater profit in the wealthier parts of london, specifically in areas populated by a "liberal" student community on release.

    welcome to advertising 101.
sell something like its like something popular.
there is actually a good little article in sight and sound a few months ago which was about how they approached the advertising for this film, they pretty much ignored what one may consider the main target (the thugs portrayed in the film) and aimed to get fans of edgar wrights work, horror films and all those rich kids who like to act like council estate thugs.

to me, thats something beautiful. such a fantastically smart approach.

no they made the monsters the opposite of what one usually expects in a cinematic environment where JJ abrahms is a creative force.

they created an alien design which was original to the film, so in future that image can be connected directly to the film. unlike most hollywood films, which seem to have one alien design everyone works around

Now you're arguing semantics. You hate the film for ridiculous reasons.

For some reason you judging this movie based on some ridiculous, and crazy standards.

    Allow me to elaborate.
    >I want my car to be attractive, somewhat decent gas mileage and be somewhat comfortable
This is setting a high standard (it's not all that high, but you get the picture (oh wait, you're Mark, maybe you don't))
    >I want my car to look as good as Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG, Be as fuel efficient as a mass-produced econo-car, and be as comfortable while driving as a Rolls-Royce or a Bentley is to ride in.
This, is a ridiculously high standard. If you were to judge every single car that gets produced by this standard, then every car would fail.

You're using a ridiculous standard to judge Attack the Block, one that I'm sure you don't use to judge any other movies.

So the question is, why are you using it with this one?
