Honestly, this shit isn't interesting unless it blows up. I'm not saying I want it to blow up, certainly not. But that's the only reason I could think to watch it... on the off chance it blows up. Other than that... you seen one, you seen em all.

The only "replacement plan" was Obama down-sizing NASA and laying off around 75% of the people in NASA while making all future launches outsourced to China. So everything JFK worked for is pretty much gone now.

Obama's reasoning was we can't afford to fund NASA anymore because of shitfucked economy (that Bush created). Is it NASA's fault? No. Are there other ways to help economy? Yes, like tax the fucking rich or lowering our military budget... which republicans won't let him do. Does defunding NASA make a dent? Not really, no other choice though.

If I remember correctly, the initial thought and plan was that these shuttles were going to be used for weekly missions. And would be completely reusable with very little maintenance. Too bad that was a fantasy. Each mission repair costs about the same as one Apollo mission did.

Slightly related story, my Japanese prof. told me of an acquaintance back home that got to go into space as a researcher. She said it made him very religious and that he saw shit.

I didn't have the heart to tell her that those extreme g-force trainers the USAF has consistently cause near death experiences and dude's brain was just reacting to some massive gravity. She looked all warm and fuzzy, having those passively religious feelings the Japanese sometimes get.

No, it means we are going to stop for a while, and rethink of new and better way to get to space that doesn't involve Apollo-like flights or lemon-shuttles.

The plan to succeed the shuttle program as something very similar to the Apollo program with man made capsule flights. but that plan fell apart quickly. I'm guessing, however, the most likely thing that they're going to go with a revamp of the shuttles... but this time shuttles that actually work and cost efficient.

    Why are people so stupid?

NASA continues deep space exploration and aviation technology development. They will also (for now) continue launching satellites. For those of you who don't follow NASA at all, they have a fleet of different rocket designs, not just the shuttle. They are CONSTANTLY launching satellites into orbit on smaller rockets. However, NASA is very expensive when it comes to satellite launches. SpaceX, the leading private space company(also American), is going to be much cheaper (cheaper than China even). SpaceX has successfully remotely tested their manned capsule and docked it with the ISS and plans to launch it with a crew next year.

NASA will work with SpaceX to launch cargo and personnel into space when the capsule is ready, but NASA will do all of the exploration research and planning.

Worth mentioning - the SpaceX Dragon capsule is designed with flights to Mars and the Moon in mind.
