It's always the eyes that kills it for me. That fake shine. They never get the eyes quite right with CGI.

Maybe if they hired some actual artists, but that's probably wishful thinking.

    >“You’ve got to compete head on with these other epic works of fantasy and fiction, the Tolkiens and the
‘Star Wars’ and the ‘Star Treks,’” Cameron said. “People want a persistent alternate reality to invest themselves in and they want the detail that makes it rich and worth their time. They want to live somewhere else. Like Pandora.”

BRASILIA (AFP) – Film director James Cameron said Sunday he will return to Brazil this year to make a 3D film on indigenous people of the Amazon who oppose construction of a huge dam for fear it could flood tribal lands.

"I want to return to meet some of the leaders of the Xikrin-Kayapo tribe who invited me," the Canadian director said in an interview published in the Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper.

"I want to take a 3D camera to film how they live, their culture," said Cameron, whose blockbuster movie Avatar tells the story of the peaceful Na'Vi people who live in harmony with nature on the planet Pandora and wage a bloody fight against strip-miners from Earth.

I honestly just think that Cameron waited too long.

He said he'd had the idea for the movie forever ago, but the technology didn't exist at the time. Not totally sure what technology he used to make Avatar, but by the time he did, it wasn't anything new to see human actors rendered in CGI.

I mean clearly, he wanted it too be a groundbreaking thing where the term "Avatar" referred not only to the Na'vi dolls of the story, but the CGI models that were taking the place of their human counterparts.

Yet, I for one, was far more impressed when I saw it a few years prior with Davy Jones in "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest."

The thing about Davy Jones is you watch it with the expectation that it is Bill Nighy in an awesome costume, and maybe some CGI around the tentacle beard.

There's bits (like whenever you see his leg thumping on the deck) that I'm 100% convinced were done with props and the production team is lying about being CGI

    Not belief, it's fact.

    >But it was not until [James Cameron] saw how Peter Jackson had created the Gollum character in Lord of the Rings that he felt it would be possible to make Avatar – although, he said: “We were going significantly beyond anything he had done because we had all sorts of different characters based on different actors.”

    >[James Cameron] went to New Zealand to meet [Peter} Jackson, toured his special-effects workshop and hired Jackson’s Weta company to work on Avatar.

    >Cameron explained his methods as he took me on a tour of the offices of his Lightstorm company in an unobtrusive, three-storey building on a busy street in the centre of Santa Monica. It is there, in offices lined with movie posters and rooms containing models of outlandish-looking creatures, that his staff of 60 artists, writers, production assistants and computer experts work on bringing his sometimes impossible seeming ideas to the screen.

I realized this a long time ago and have liked Aba ever since. He is certainly the hero of /tv/ to me but it isn't any of that "Hero we deserve, but not that we need" bullshit. Aba is just like "I'm your mother ucking hero" and that is that.
