For those of us that have watched the show twice, I have a question.
How badly do you want to start your third viewing?
I've given about 120 hours of my life to watching The Wire, and I have accepted the fact that it was totally worth it, but still, I'm asking you, /tv/.
    Was it worth it?

Season 5 gets way too much hate. It wrapped all the characters up nicely and had a fantastic Marlo an amazing finish. Seems like a lot of the complaints are around the faking a serial killer and Omar reaching super hero status. In the case of the first one it is based off real life events and made perfect sense for the progression of McNulty's obsessive character traits. He finally just snapped. As for Omar his antics were important to complete Marlo's story arc. By showing him up constantly it only made the sting that much worse when he wasn't the one who was able to kill him. As far as the falling out the window thing goes, people survive shit like that all the time. He landed in a bush, it wasn't a huge suspension of disbelief.

    >>12025207
Sopranos has some of the best single episodes of any series but as a whole The Wire comes together much better.
    >> Anonymous 09/10/10(Fri)00:44 No.12025290
Would have been better if Marlo died fighting those drug dealers in the end.

Better yet, Omar killed him so one of the best characters in television for a long time wasn't shot by a fucking 10 year old

Lester and McNulty were always the same type of police officer. They might have approached it in different ways but both were outside of the box thinkers. While the progression wasn't nearly as natural as it was for McNulty I don't have a problem with Lester going along with it, his character was all about the ends justifying the means.

Watch through season 1 if you can. If not, whatever, but I committed myself to that because of how many people reccomended the show and somewhere in the middle of the season I was hooked.

If you end up liking season 1 by the end, dont let season 2 turn you off. A lot of people dont like it as much and it is hard to get into after season 1 but its one of my favorite seasons.

The best thing about the wire were all the repeating themes.
That scene in the first episode where D is teaching the corner boys how to play chess is fucking genius, and comes back (thematically) time and time again.

That was the first time I was wondering who these people were and why I should care after expecting to be like other shows where just a few minor things change each season. For the most part every season starts slow and then builds and builds to a glorious finale. Every scene leading up to it is important though and you will appreciate it more on the second watch through.

Season 2 puts you in a whole new world with a bunch of new characters, but that's not a bad thing. If it's hard for you to see where the show is going right now, keep watching. A moment will arrive where everything is made clear, and it'll be awesome.

Also, if you don't watch Seasons 2 and 3, you'll never get to what is almost certainly the best season of television ever made: The Wire, Season 4.

THE WIRE IS A SPRAWLING INTERTWINED CITY OF AUTHENTIC CHARACTERS WITH MULTILAYERED PLOTLINES

BREAKING BAD HAS GOOD CORE PERFORMANCES BY CRANSTON AND PAUL BUT ITS FAR SMALLER IN SCOPE, AND THE PLOT IS ALMOST SIMPLISTIC BY COMPARISON

BREAKING BAD IS STILL THE BEST SHOW CURRENTLY AIRING, THEN DEXTER

THE WIRE IS THE BEST SHOW EVER MADE

The problem with Season 5 is all that shit at the Sun is heavy handed and leaden. The young chick reporter is cute and it's good to see Meldrick back in Baltimore, but otherwise those scenes are a chore. Steve Earle's version of WDITH is way too sedate compared to the other versions, although that's a matter of taste. This coming from a guy who likes the Neville Bros version the best because the bombast/drama suits all the blowhard politicians.

Everything else about S5 is great.
