Finally slowpoked my way around to seeing The Dark Knight.

The ferry scene killed this movie dead. No, it didn't just kill it. It flat-out MURDERED it, jumped up and down on the corpse, then shit in the corpse's mouth.

I've heard plenty about how bad the ferry scene was but, fuck, I wasn't expecting that.
    >> The Axe !jDc8w1S.mg 09/09/10(Thu)21:18 No.12022625
    Yeah it was pretty bad.

The whole ending was pretty anti-climatic.

    ;_;
    >> Anonymous 09/09/10(Thu)21:18 No.12022632
I don't think it was THAT bad, but you could pretty much just cut it out of the movie entirely without consequence
    >> Anonymous 09/09/10(Thu)21:20 No.12022653
That's what bothered you about this flick?

Not The Joker conveniently having guys with elevator-cable-shooting guns standing on exactly the right balconies near the funeral procession for JUST IN CASE the police decided to launch a helicopter for no reason?

Not the fact that between the last movie and this one, Gotham City went from Blade Runner Los Angeles in 2019 to Chicago in the present day?

The ferry scene was the only story in the entire movie.

It was a comic-book movie so I was prepared for ridiculous shit happening and I never saw Batman Begins so I don't know anything about the setting changing.

But the ferry scene, man. The movie was pretty enjoyable and then ... that. I think I'd rather be raped by the huge black dude on the prison ferry than ever watch that scene again.

I don't think this movie had a point. I think it desperately wanted to have a point, I think the people who made it truly believed they had made a point, but there simply wasn't any point.

In the end, it was just about a crazy guy doing crazy shit, an insane man dressed up like a bat failing to accomplish anything, and some schmuck who took advice from the man who murdered his fiancee and ruined his life. tl;dr it was about a bunch of stupid assholes.

I've never seen this movie but I hate it.

Why? Because I teach film and video production at a two-year school (hey, it's an honest job and the pay's really not bad) and ever. Single. Student. I've had since The Dark Knight came out has held it up as the greatest movie of all time, the movie to which everything else must compare. Almost every day, almost every class period, I hear about The Dark Knight. Every time I demonstrate a storytelling technique or any sort of camera, editing, or audio trick, someone is guaranteed to say, "Ooh! Just like Christopher Nolan did in The Dark Knight!"

For two years now I've had to put up with this. I thought some other comic book would come along and people would latch onto it, but no. Not even Inception has ended it. Maybe when Sucker Punch comes out, the fanboys will latch onto it and, finally, I won't have to hear about The Dark Knight ever again.

I agree, OP. The Dark Knight's biggest flaw is that the climax was the car chase scene, everything after that seemed really lackluster.

Also: why the fuck were there only TWO ferries? I mean, the entire fucking city is trying to leave Gotham before sundown, but there are only two ferries hauling about a hundred people each. That evacuation plan sucks dicks. Was the rest of the city just waiting at the docks for the ferries to come back and pick them up, wondering when the Joker was going to start shit?

But that's not nearly as dumb as the hospital scene. "You don't want to kill me because I killed Rachel, you want to kill the police for failing to stop me from killing Rachel. This logic is so sound I'm willing to let you put a loaded gun to my head."

It's still a good movie but don't be fanboys. It had serious qualms

as people said there was no way that boat scene was realistic. I'll buy the big black guy doing that because he may have actually done some soul searching while in prison and shit but other prisoners and cops would've pulled the trigger. Those civilains? no doubt about it either.

Batman was a plot device and was the most boring character...well 2nd most boring.

Harvey's little punch out and buy guns made in USA was lolwut

Him going off the deep end and blaming Batman and Gordon when he wanted to be in their secret club made no sense either. If anything he should've became a sort of pseudo vigilante kinda guy which would be at odds with Batman due to his killing mentality.

The bus scene in the beginning

    Bullet science

And I hated the witty banter the cops had during the Harvey is Batman sequence. It was an imitation of the first one's car chase but it felt stupid for fellow cops to just say Oh snap that's not good that's really not good when several of their comrades just died in a helicopter explosion
    and so forth

I think Begins was better because it was a bit more focused

Batman has no supernatural powers. Everything he does is for good, at the risk of his own life. Plus his dad was killed trying to protect Bruce and his mom. Batman mythos is full of people trying to do what is good at risk of their own life. Even in the movie, Harvey wanted his girlfriend to be saved over himself.

Time and time again the citizens of Gotham are depicted as being pretty shitty. Yes the main characters like Gordon Alfred and Bruce do all this but random citizens? How can you say that ties into the Batman mythos?

Realistically I think alot of people would have no problem blowing up a bunch of criminals who they pay too much damn taxes for to take care of anyway. Especially since they live in Gotham and more or less jaded and cynical fucks who want to live.

You or them sort of thing

    >I've never seen this movie but I hate it.

That's why you teach film at a community college. If I was in your class, I'd be talking about The Dark Knight everyday, and when we write out whatever bullshit assignment you give out, I would pick a movie you love, and say it sucks because its gay, and its gay because it sucks balls, and continue that logic until it met the length requirements. Then I would end the assignment with "This is what it is like when you say you don't like the Dark Knight." And if you failed me, I wouldn't give a shit since I go to a community college, and at most all I lost was like 70 bucks that I paid for the class, and maybe 0.1 off my GPA that no one cares about since I go to a community college.

I don't get it. How this reaction image refute my point? There are plenty of oneshots and arcs where people in Gotham are shown to be dicks. It is a huge city after all. It's no Smallville.

Everything ties together and makes sense for the natural progression of the characters. Nothing wrong with that scene at all, just because nobody dies does not mean it isn't important to the story. Nitpicking to this level is obnoxious, it's almost like you people are trying to find reasons to hate it.

The random citizens that are shown to be shitty are like that to show how prevalent crime is in Gotham.

The point of the boat scene was to show that there is still hope in Gotham, that people aren't going to kill each other.

    Recently watched it again.

My god this film is glorious.

The Ferry scene has some weird shit happening but still a great Humanity Fuck Yeah! moment.

The only complaint I have about this film is that Batman uses some weird ass elbow and knee only Muay Thai fighting style which looks really silly sometimes.

    Also, to the realism fags:
Batman is a fucking comicbook hero. Batman begins wasnt realistic and Dark Knight didnt try to be either.

In the context with the amount of realism the world is given it makes perfect sense. Was just to tie a nice bow on the story that in the end humanity will prevail, even if they have made some past mistakes. It's hardly the most far fetched thing in a Batman movie.

In the beginning of the movie Harvey gets "attacked" in court. The gun jammed (intentionally), Harvey punched the shooter in the face and the judges decision got postponed.

    It served 2 purposes:
a.) show that the Criminals control Gotham, from the streets up to the courthouse. They played the entire justice system.

b.) a throwback to Two Faces origin story. Originally he got splashed with acid in court in a scene quite similiar to this one.
    >> Anonymous 09/10/10(Fri)01:17 No.12025702
The trouble with the ferry scene is that it doesn't ring true. If you were a parent on that boat and your kids lives were in danger, you'd flip that fucking switch.

We're not really given any good reason why they don't blow each other up, except to say "oh, the city is good, it believes in something!' Yeah, but.. why. Because of Batman? Eh. Not really. And then the "gentle giant" black man who nobly throws the detonator out? Also arbitrary and difficult to believe.

What would have happened if one or both boats HAD flipped their switches? But of course, they can't. The movie requires that they don't. Because, again, it's completely arbitrary.

While TDK is grounded in a certain amount of reality in the end it is still a comic book story and it plays true to that. The themes are exaggerated and in the end it is a simple good vs evil plot. But even in that case you are projecting your own beliefs on the characters. There were people on each ship who voiced an opinion like yours but in the end they were drowned overruled by the people who would rather die then live with blood on their hands. While it may be hard to believe those people exist when you browse 4chan all the time I can assure you there are plenty, I'd consider myself to be one.

    >What would have happened if one [...] boats HAD flipped their switches?
    The other would explode

    > or both
Impossible, If one switch is activated the other gets blown up.

And the reason why they didnt push the button is quite simple. After the initial shock of Jokers revelation they noticed that neither they nor the other boat activated the switch.

A really simple dilemma, comparable to the prisoners dillema:

If you fold, your partner is fucked
If your partner folds you are fucked
If both fold both are fucked
If neither folds then you all win.

Blowing up the other boat is a sign of weakness and in the end the Human Spirit remained superior.

iirc I quite liked the ferry scene, unless you mean the scene with the people on the ferry, which sucked rock hard cock all the way to the hilt, and then gagged up a little vomit onto the hard cock in its mouth and used the vomit as lube to shove it farther and farther down its throat.

They don't like it because its "moralfag" shit. Hurrr dey shud kill eachotter. I'm so edgy and cynical. People kill each other in the real world, so I would flip the switch.

GEE I WONDER WHY THE WORLD FUCKING SUCKS MAYBE IT'S BECAUSE OF ALL THE LITTLE FAGGOTS WHO ARE SO GODDAMN PARANOID ABOUT OTHERS THAT THEY FLIP THE FUCK OUT OVER PETTY SHIT. MAYBE THE POINT OF THE SCENE WAS TO SHOW THAT HELL, IT JUST MAY BE POSSIBLE FOR EVERYONE NOT TO ACT LIKE CONCEITED BASTARDS FOR FIFTEEN FUCKING MINUTES AND MAKE A GOOD DECISION BASED ON MUTUAL BENEFITS OF TAKING THE HIGHER ROAD. BUT I BET THAT DIDN'T CROSS YOUR MIND BECAUSE YOU WERE TOO BUSY SUCKING DOWN MTN DEW AND BEATING HOOKERS TO DEATH IN GTA BECAUSE YOU THINK THAT HAPPENS IN REAL LIFE.

My good nobody understands the Harvey story line.

He flipped for the Joker, Joker lived. He flipped for both the crooked cops one died one lived. He flipped for Eric Roberts he passed but to be a dick about it he flipped for the driver (the best 2face scene in the movie). Okay the finale was a bit of a clusterfuck.

He flipped for Himself (something 2face would do). He flipped for Bats. And he flipped for the kid(WTF) he should have flipped for Gordon. but I digress.

He didn't magically forgive the Joker, Joker just convinced him to give him a chance. I think they played the coin up enough through the movie.

I'm gonna be honest I'm a big 2Face fan. So I'm probably a little lenient on this aspect of the story. But I can see how it could be confusing that Harvey became two face.

But yeah ferry scene crap. Joker should have had a better evil guy plot. And with the exception of the Car Chase and maybe the penthouse fight the action scenes were a bit bland.

Less crooked cops with more power and ability to stop crime instead of sitting back and taking it, criminals scared to even sell a few drugs to random joes just because of a fucking signal in the clouds, mafia deals and such getting taken down left and right, legitimate lawyers and such working hard to take down crime families, etc etc

The fucking place was a lot better. Hell, even the slums or underbelly of gotham or whatever the fuck that was all depressing in the last movie now looks moderately okay, or at least Gordon's area does.

I thought it would've been awesome if during the Ferry scene, one or both of the parties hit the switch, but in true Joker fashion (or at least, what should'veb een his fashion), the switch that gets activated has it's boat blown up.

Joker would still get to say that those people chose to kill the others, but it's a lot more maniacal to tell them they're killing the others when they're really going to kill themselves.

Also, it's not "hurr durr moralfag" to say that in the real world people would hit that switch. Hell, it's not even a "people are evil in the real world" thing, this shit isn't black and white, this guy had a perfect example with the parent thing: >>12025702
