OP here. The thing with Syria though is that it's expected for it to encompass "backward" laws and adherence to Islamic fundamentals. It's a genuine place, unlike the emirate of Dubai which is nothing but a cultural wasteland suffering an identity crisis. Ordinary Syrians are some of the most amazing and hospitable people you will ever meet. Where else in the world would it be considered 'daring' for local boys to run up and say "hello, hello" to tourists and then run off giggling? There is such an innocence to the place. <3 Syria.
Unlike Dubai of course, where local people get around with a 10 foot pole up their asshole.
