    Sup pikeys.

Just wondering if anyone else has a deep fascination with a foreign nation/culture, so deep that you have a seething desire to one day relocate there and immerse yourselves within the local population?

For me, it is Turkish culture. Basically everything about Turkey. The language, the culture, the music, the food, the architecture, the lifestyle, the people, Istanbul.... I just love it, almost like an inherent affiliation with it, despite not having any official allegiance to Turkey...

Anyone else? Inb4 over 9000 weaboo replies.

Actually, Istanbul comes from a Greek rootword aswell, and the city's name was not changed when it was taken in 1453, but used as Kostantiniyye officially. It was only changed to Istanbul in 1930 citing that it was the common usage, therefore using Constantionople has no logical backing even if you're a bleeding-ass nationalist.

The more you know, the less you embarrass yourself on the internets via exposure of ignorance feeding your xenophobic tendencies.

Turkey's not a bad choice. One of my professors lived a long time in Istanbul, places like the underground city sound amazing. Get into a good business job, I've heard there's a huge foreign population in the capital.

My brother works as an equity analyst for a securities company that mostly works with foreign clients looking to invest money in the Turkish market, so he writes all his reports in English. However, as he covers local companies, he's in constant contact with their managers, who do speak English of course, but I wouldn't think knowledge of Turkish is dispensable. You could work in international sales in such a company, though I guess that would require more marketing skill than finance knowledge. Also, be warned, pays are ridiculous compared to New York, London, Frankfurt etc.

I'm like that with Russia, though I have zero ethnic connection to the country (I'm korean). I like the language, the literature and the hearty but plain food. I'm also interested by how they've paralleled the US in my field of aerospace engineering. The whole country just fascinates me.

I'm dying to try Turkish coffee though (pic related).

there are lots of FDI consulting firms in Turkey. and lots of foreing expats working in them. (istanbul and ankara mostly)

i have a friend who works for GE Finance there. He didnt know a word of turkish. So you're obviously in the right field if you want to find a job abroad without knowing the language

But turkish is actually relatively easy to learn from what i have heard, because it's quite logical.

I occasionally enjoy traveling, but I would never move out of Canada because of an obsession with a foreign culture.

Finland for me. Everyone is always curious as to why when I mention this, but I don't really know why. Everything about the country--the language, the people, the cold and grey environment, etc. I've been teaching myself Finnish for like 2 years now and am nowhere near fluent, lol. Within the next 2 years I would like to visit the country.

"Shitty" would be your opinion, I'm not going to argue about that, but it's not an "artificial constructed language" save for a very limited part of the vocabulary.

it's funny because you're obviously a butthurt turk and you don't know shit about your own language - I guess sapir-whorf hypothesis is true, and your dumbed down language is limiting your thought...

I am a Turk and, no, I'm not butthurt. I am starting to think you are though; either butthurt or a troll.

To the best of my knowledge, it is not an artificially constructed language; which is not a matter of thought, but of knowledge, thus your argument regarding Sapir-Whorf is inane and, I suppose, aimed at insulting me, which is what lead me to think you are either butthurt or a troll.

If you have proof to back that claim, please do share.

Scratch "proof", that implies certainty, which is next to impossible in linguistics. A couple of articles from sources worthy of taking seriously should suffice.

I'm a Canadafag, and for some reason I'm really fascinated with Russian history and culture, to an extent that I've been learning the language for the past year and learning everything I can about its history. Maybe I was a russkie in another life or something, though I have no Russian or Slavic roots.

I would love to live there some day, meet a hot ruskie wife and settle down. Maybe make a living as a private English teacher around Moscow or something. Or eastern-Ukraine, same thing just poorer.
