alright sorry guys, im doing a quick up date since were going for dinner soon.

>>594283
i'll get pics of the room up as soon as i can. let me just say the toilet is kinda cool. once you sit your ass down it automatically has a water running sound so your roomie cant hear you taking a shit. but its like a goddamn closet trying to change your clothes shower and. the bed are tiny and theres no room to put your clothes. this is a business hotel by the way so if you're staying in one be prepared to have shit go right back in your suitcase.
mcdonald's wont be up for a while i hope cause i dont plan on eating there any time.
girls at the bar will be a maybe, we havent really seen anything special except really skinny girls with okay faces with heavy make up. hopefully it will get better as we venture into different districts.

let me break down the day a bit for you guys, since its one of my assignments of a daily journal.

day 2: wake up, shower go to breakfast at the top of the hotel where i posted that first pic i think. from there we headed to shinjuku station west entrance, go the suika pass (you need it for the metro system) 500yen deposit plus a reload system for fares. went the most confusing metro systems ever (Sort of) its all color coded and has transfers but they have 3 trains coming in so you need to make sure you get on the right one. from there we heading to the Edo-tokyo museum where, we toured the edo period of tokyo. I have lots of pics so if some are interested ill post when i have time. The tour consisted of a varying range of the edo period from the shogun and samurai system and to how modernized japan with a drainage system, firefighters, and class for samurai and commoners. from there we views a bunch of dioramas of each scene, they were really cool with how detailed each piece was, even the roofs were decorated. the museum was sort of boring from me since i took a course on the period so it was mainly review but if you dont know much i suggest for you to go.

from there we walked to asakusa along a river bank. i found the walk enjoyable since it was out in the open sun along a river where we saw boat restaurants, murals of graduations and the homeless (no pics, not a dick).

In Asakusa we did the cleanse in the water, the incense for better health through the smoke wafting, and prayer with money donation, a.nd lucky fortune. Asakusa has many many shops selling souvenirs so if you're looking for something you'll find stuff there, from swords, to otaku gear. didnt really see many girls in the 17-23 range but many middle school aged kids there. the girls we did see were either meh in the majority to drop dead gorgeous. 90/10 ratio i'd say.
im noticing no difference being in a metro city except that people will ignore you unless your loud or doing something really stupid. you cant strike up a conversation at all.

tonight we walked the opposite direction of the center and found lots of little back alley bars and shops. i think you can get a better feel for true Japanese lifestyles if you tour those areas opposed to the bright neon centers.

also if youre interested in the food stuffs, everything is ordered through vending machines for the most part. get your coupon and take it in to get your meal. also its fucking awesome getting bills backs from a vending machine instead of just a pocket full of coins.

day 3 were heading to Kabuki and Ginza so hopefully we'll get some time for me to post more pics.

not sure, i'll try and find it out. our teachers are basically handling all of that kind of stuff since there is 14 of us. i think we are heading on the water taxis so i'll check it out when it comes up. pretty sure the suika pass works on everything not sure about Pasmo because my teacher was having problems with her card when we were doing things so she just traded it in for her refund.

hey, op, do see a lot of other foreigners around, or is it just you and your group mainly?

to be honest i've been noticing a lot of foreigners but it might just be because im looking for them. even so, coming from Vancouver, being around a fully asian area doesn't bother me that much since I mainly ignore them any way. I cant comment on the loneliness yet, as again in 3 weeks when im off on my own adventure since im stuck in groups until the end of the study tour. but ive noticed that it is damn near impossible to talk to a Japanese person other than when you get your food at a restaurant or enter a store to buy something. so i can see it getting lonely if you dont have friends here already or get put into a working environment right away. people seem to ignore you outright but i've been told that they are just shy as hell. not sure which to believe yet.

i'll update more tomorrow, see you anons

pic is of a basic restaurant front, they have pics so you can point or push a button to get the food you want.

buy a goddamn JR pass before you leave your country or you're going to be paying a minimum of $100 a pop per trip. the JR pass also works on other JR lines so you wont have to reload your suica card all the time too. You can also get $100~ plane tickets if you want to visit the other islands. the jr pass goes for 1,2 or 3 weeks so make sure you have where you want to go planned. Im planning on staying in hostels for the most part except for the week or so I stay in Osaka where I am renting an apartment.

day 3 update.

alright anons, day 3 we headed out to the kabuki the theater but unfortunately the kabuki-za was under renovation so we went to the knock off one a couple blocks away. for those of you who dont know anything about the kabuki, its Japanese traditional plays/dramas (yes i know theres more to it but im lazy).

my honest opinion of Kabuki is that if you have a goof sense of humor you'll laugh your ass off and get yourself kicked out. its faily long winded and dull at least the type we went to see, but the dances we saw were very interactive and graceful. if you go to the kabuki i suggest you read up a little so you know what you're watching because we had many people bored as fuck or saying it sucked cause they didnt understand what was happening. you can also get digital translators that play in your ear to explain certain areas of the play. sorry no pics of kabuki strictly prohibited.

after the kabuki we headed to ginza. highly over priced area with major department stores that i didnt go into. too a few pics if you're interested but i literally spent 10 mins there and got pissed off cause it was crowded, no young people. and expensive

toilet with bidet functions. the :3 button is rinse, the one beside it is bidet and the other one is a stop button. its fucking weird to use but it saves you having to take a shower after you take a dump lol.

after getting back from ginza, me and a fellow bro hit the lobby bar. never do this (Common sense) but if you take a 5 min in either direction you can hit bars, konbini, or even vending machines that will save you a minimum of 50 yen a purchase.
regardless the only reason i did was to have a few drinks while i waiting for a Japanese friend to come meet me .

anyway, met my new Japanese friend. Dont be a total retard when meetng a Japanese person that was predetermined. bring an omiyage from your country, chocolates or something. anyway met her at the hotel and she took me to places that i couldnt my own without getting lost. we hit up an awesome udon place where they make the noodles in front of you. i helped her with her english homework cause im nice and got to learn things about Japan. be patient with Japanese they earnestly want to try English but are scared to speak it and dont practice at all in schools.
after dinner, we hit a purikura (weird ass photo booths for girls...) took some pics, be prepared to kneel if you are taller than 5'6". however the purikura was located in a game center, so some of the best looking girls in there, and some cool games and prices. outside i caught my first glimps of maids and hosts/hostesses (Sorry no pics, they caught me by surprise so no camera ready) i'll get some tomorrow taking my group to see them tomorrow. also got lost as fuck in Shinjuku but it awas fun getting out of that mess cause its all underground.

any requests, yes i know im not doing so good at providing them but im trying no to be the creepy ass gaijin. i dont blend in as much as i thought being half Japanese. they saw i have big eyes and a different nose, also doesn't help that im bulkier. however, im not taller surprisingly the guys and lots of girls are averaging over 5'7" but that might be because im in tokyo.

day 4 guy. today we heading to Yasukuni Shrine. gotta say it as pretty cool walking in and seeing all old samurai armor, swords, and weaponry. this museum is very right winged so be prepared for some controversial reading if you know anything about Japanese war history, especially the Nanking Massacre. It is really worth going to if you want to get some history in and see some really cool war memorabilia. also I was really moved reading the letters sent home by Kamikaze pilots to their families.

after that we headed to the Imperial palace. I'm not sure if it costs any money but its really not worth going in and seeing. the best pictures can be taken from outside and the tour sucked as in my opinion. gotta walk slow for all the seniors walking with you.

I plan on staying for a month, what place are you staying at?
How are you liking it so far?

I suggest hitting up the Akihabara (I think that's it) district. The arcades are awesome

I'm with you, those short skirts are definitely worth visiting for

we're staying in business hotels. not sure how much they cost a night. but you can stay in hostels for 20-30 a night and they are clean and comfy. if you're moving around a lot there are capsule hotels.
its pretty good so far but doing the usual museum hot spots and the like gets boring because they dont really cater to my interests. but the stuff we do see that we see that im interested in personally is awesome because you see it physically.we're hitting Akiba monday i think.
>>
>>595272

Hostels make sense, I'll look into those. Not exactly sure how much I'll be moving around since I got my fair share of sight seeing during the school sponsored trip. I might just be running around experiencing the night life more than I did last time

I know what you mean about being a little burnt out/bored with the museums and such, I enjoyed experiencing the culture and interacting with the people more. But don't get me wrong, learning the history of Japan was fun as well.

Oh god roppongi. Enjoy being harassed by nigerians to go into their 'international clubs'.

Here's a hint. If you have a cellphone and you don't want to be harassed by them, just pull it out and pretend like you are talking on it. They SHOULDN'T bother you, but its better than nothing.

They will stop you and chase you a few blocks, if they think they got you.

You have been warned.

this. omg . we went to roppongi. they dont harass me because i'm big enough to pass as Yakuza (yes, hahah omg wtfrotfl, im bulky and tall and have a pissed off look all the time.) we went to roppongi and ended up heading back to Shinjuku in fear of being ripped off or forced to pay for shit we didnt have. sorry guys no real pictures. but for info on roppongi i suggest you find a local japanese friend to show you around otherwise you're going to be ripped off. we came back to shinjuku instead and found a local british pub and got pleasantly smashed. pics when im able to upload them. roppongi is a different place in its own, each corner is run by nigerians looking to swindle you out of your money, to find a real place to drink and find hot wimmenz you need a local to show you unless you are lucky ass hell.

also commercials in Japan fok. bare ass and thongs and all. titty commercial ftw

Unless you are the BRAH type of person (and have alot of money to throw away), you are really best avoiding roppongi all together.

I currently live in Japan, and took a trip to Tokyo around new years. Never been to roppongi before, but tried it, and was not impressed.

Shinjuku and Shibuya are FAR more entertaining in my opinion.

Plus, if you're looking to get some japanese girl action, you are best looking in Shinjuku. Roppongi is filled with 'international' bars which usually do not have Japanese hostesses/girls.

There's a bar in Shibuya called 'Hobgoblin' I believe, and its pretty chill. Other than that, I don't really bar hop when in Tokyo. Akihabara and the like are more my tastes.

OP, if you are ever in Akihabara, and you like katsu curry, check out "Go! Go! Curry". It is my favorite curry and I make it a habit to eat there once a day, when I am in Tokyo.
>>
>>595498

I hope this is your first year living in Japan, if all you can recommend OP is a 2nd class bar (why go to American style bars when you can go to Izakaya, which you can only go to in Japan, NYC, and Cali?), and a curry stand.

night time we hit up Shibuya. met a fellow anon there, cool guy no spaghetti was spilled. gotta say its was fucking awesome seeing so many goddamn people in one place but also annoying as hell.
you can meet some people here though as people get drunk they want to try out speaking english. however, lots of the bars were the size of your bedroom, so its hard to find a place to sit or stand. we just bar hopped and was pretty fun. the bars are pretty expensive here so either go to an izakaya or predrink some to loosen you up then have a few at the bar, it'll cost a lot to get drunk there
>>
>>595277
Consider sleeping in a net cafe at least once. It`s often cheaper for a 9 hour night-hour slot than a stay at a hostel would be and is actually pretty fun. Computer, TV, nice chair, free soda and tea, occasionally complimentary shower. They actually fill up pretty fast, so you might need to get there right when the night hours start.

Or you could do what the salarymen do and just sleep on the Yamanote line for an hour or two during the day.

alright guys day 6 was great!
despite the late night and early morning we headed out to Kamakura with hopes of meeting some Japanese university student tour guides. I must say my expectations were surpassed.

They took us on a tour of Kamakura to the daibastu buddha, temple area, and lunch in a Japanese style inn. The guides were great, dont expect to learn much about the area but they are definitely talkative if you can get them to warm up to you. met a little bastard of a kid talking trash language to me cause he study for two years abroad in Canada but everyone else was nice and polite. Spent most of the day dodging the cutest girl ever because she was too shy to speak English and my spaghetti was about to burst through sheer cuteness.

Later that night we hit up a ikazaya for drinks and the fun began. learned some drinking games. cultural signs for gestures. by the way everyone likes to drink here.

In the end we got some numbers and some extra prospects of meeting the rest of their club and drinking and karaoke after our tour is finished.

sorry guys no pics, my camera decided to shit on itself today. i'll see if i can get some off my friends.

my friends went to the tsukigi fish market today and said any other sushi is regurgitated shit compared to it, also i dont care for shashimi :/

We hit a maid cafe today and it was an interesting experience. maybe it was a shitty one but from what we noticed was. they recruit people with really hot street models who bring you back and have okay looking ones at the cafe. they then proceed to cover, charge you 1000 yen and then you are forced to buy drinks or food and stay an hour. no touching or pictures can be taken without paying. they also dont speak great english but they try. The girls do not wait on you hand and foot (again maybe a shitty one, we went in the early afternoon, the expensive ones open up at night time and have high ass prices but you can pay for more) they do some songs and small dances to get the patrons engaged which is fun. we also seemed to notice that if you order alcohol the first drinks seem to be spiked almost, we were getting fairly tipsy off one beer (no im not a fucking light weight) im assuming this is to get you relaxed to order more drinks. then after the first two they get weaker and weaker once they have hooked cause the okay looking girls get prettier.

not many pics of akiba today guys it wasnt busy enough so they could see us taking them and dodged or the store were empty so we got stopped.

alright guys ill do a quick recap of today.
spent the entire day in Akiba. well worth it to extent, don't go with friends who are prudish or have only specific tastes that dont lie in hentai, anime, or electronics.

we explored almost every shop in Akiba and holy god its a workout, the stairs are near vertical lol. Shop around, most stores have duplicates of every item, so you can find a better deal in one store and some have specific items that others dont. I don't have names of stores because i cant remember them, they all blurred together.

We hit up the ecchi/ doujinshi stores and if they have made an anime of it there is a hentai version of it out there. also if you're not into lolicon or imouto stuff you might want to stay away from lots of these as they are the prime bases in most of the stores sales.

hit the gundam cafe to check it out, to be honest nothing special just people in uniforms changing you extra for drinks that are named after anime stuff. the same goes for the maid cafe we hit up. you pay lots for getting very little. maybe it was because we were foreigners.

we did however hit up the 5 storey sex shops. highly suggest checking them out if you go. dont have any pics was too slow to take them without staff noticing. yes used panties are sold/ we have a pic somewhere not on me. sex toys, pockets pussies and all that jazz are there.cosplay outfits and lolicon stuff. weirded me out but still neat to see. definitely check it out.

we hit up Mos Burger today also. I suggest if you want to see how the Japanese spin a burger. Very tasty stuff. decent price and fresh.

tomorrow we are hitting the Open Air museum so Im not sure how interesting thats going to be.

post if you want more details on specific subjects, i forget what some of you ask for, i got some restroom pics and stuff for one anon and so on, but my brain can only handle so much awesome at once

just a quick update before we start he day. i've been noticing that since ive arrived here that i've been constantly off balance and feel shaking in the ground. everyone says im crazy and what not and that my equilibrium is fucked but I think its that im feeling little tremors in the ground that other people can ignore. also every building is earthquake proof so i think its a precautionary measure in the buildings to sway back and forth to absorb the minor quakes they get every day.

i brought this up because we had a real earthquake here last night, it was huge but its bigger than the one we had in Vancouver 10 years ago. also because we're on the top floor of this damn hotel it kind of freaked me out about what the fuck to do when a big quake hits, since Canadians aren't really trained for quakes other than hide under a desk/doorway, wait for it to stop then count for aftershocks. then walk out to an open field area away from power lines. my whole group woke up and looked out the door to see what the fuck to do but no one else gave a fuck.

any other anons experience this in Japan? what the fuck do you do in a skyscraper? lol

pic, ramen cause its fucking epic fresh
>>
>>596687
The sensation of constant shaking is a little weird. Maybe you felt it while standing over a subway route?

In a tall building during a quake, you'll just have to trust the architect and engineers. lol. If you're on the ground floor, I guess you can rush outside in a panic and hope no facades or rooftop debris falls on you.

Modern high-rises are designed to flex in quakes. While I've read a little about the technology for an architecture class, I haven't had the privilege of encountering a quake in Japan so I don't have any solid advice to offer. The newer the building, the safer you probably are, unless the Japanese have been good about retrofitting older structures.
>>
>>596753
>>596687

first, this ramen looks cool, way more delicius then the stuff I saw on my online stream when they introduced it.

Second, the quakes. I never really experiencend one myself, but as far as I know u don't need to be afraid of them in Tokyo. Like the other anon said, the buildings are made to flex and swing. The japanese had this kind of technology and architecture since hundred of years. (the Skytree uses some modern version of a qake resistent Pagoda with a core thet shakes differently from the outside of the building)

Beeing in a Skyskraper makes it feel worse, but it isn't. The Japanese hold onto walls and doorways if that happens. (Cause u won't fall and nothing will fall on u).
They say they would get problems when a quake gets over a 6 or 7.
They don't use the "Richtersscale". (cause that only counts to 6). The scale they use says that a 6, or 7 quake is a remarkable heavy one.
They usually don't go over 3 in Tokyo. And no one gives a fuck about a 3-earthquake
>>
Hey I am considering moving to Japan in a year or two and I would greatly appreciate some advice on doing so. Like good places to look for an apartment things I could do for work.
>>
>>596753
>Modern high-rises are designed to flex in quakes.

This si what I've heard as well. The buildings wiggle and have some sort of flexibility so that it doesn't break off from its foundation and smash into another building

alright guys a quick update. pretty wasted to be honest. all you can drink is fucking awesome here. $35 for food and drink.

today we hit the open air museum in (i forgot where the fuck it is). pretty cool if for all you anons interested in architecture and design, or a miyazaki fans since he based spirited away off this area. it was really cool to go in and see old fashion houses, and modern european mixed with tradition japanese homes. it was pretty cheap to go to so if you have some free time check it out, the train cost more than the museum. also the gardens surrounding the area was really neat, i imagine if you go during fall and spring it was be awesome since all the trees are sakura trees.

also tonight we hit an izakaya and ate our fill and drank a lot. sobering up now but still feeling good. for once we found one that didnt water down the drinks so we were pretty good after 3 drinks and after 6 its was getting nice. also a friend of a friend (japanese local) cane with us and she was real funny. these girls after you get a few in them love talking dirty and joking around. they make for good company when you're feeling good and drinking lots.

also it took a week in Tokyo to kick my otaku/weeaboo-ness in but I finally ended up cracking and bought some stuff. Nothing fancy. I bought a FF10 key chain from the Square Enix head quarters. I really wanted the necklace but I alas, i dont know if im allergic to sterling silver or not, and didnt want to risk the money. I have many pics if you all are interested but they are on a different SD card i'll load some when I get them tomorrow. Main highlights was everything in the store. Vincent's full g-suit costume, game jewelry, figures and a live size Sephiroth. the only thing that disappointed me was that there were no life size swords, since i know they are produced.
also I plan to go back to Akiba since the last store right at closing I found a replica of Vash's magnum from Trigun on display only $80.

If any of you come, check out the main retailer stores, and then go to Akiba and see if you can find a better deal but the main retail stores usually have some in store only sales/items.

do it. regardless if its something you really want to do. if you're the quiet type you'll fit in even more. keep in mind that Japanese get much more open and expressive when drunk or in smaller groups or around close friends.

or if you really want take a friend that you're closer with that is a bit more outgoing because if theres a place you want to go you'll definitely go there if you tag-along with him/her. i wouldnt have walked into the 5 story sex shops if my buddy didnt go in before me. he's a bit of a obnoxious guy but he gets things done that many 4chan guys cant and doesnt care about the repercussions because he's not hurting anyone

alright. quick update since today way kind of dull. checked out of the hotel and hit the shinkansen. shit is fucking cash. maybe we paid for upgraded seats but we all sat in a row and the set recline and the leg space is good for someone up to 7' ft tall. also the the view from the shinkansen is awesome im looking forward to riding it again.
e hit Kyoto and man is that station huge. if youre into engineering design or architecture check it out. it has a post modern/tradition aspect to it with sky walks and top side gardens.

the hotel in Kyoto is awesome too. we had room to pack the suit cases under the beds so we can walk around. the only drw back is the washroom is 6'1" tall so we have to duck to have a shower.

tonight we hit the Gion district. We watch tradition tea ceremony , maiko dance, pre-edo music, and puppet plays. if youre into traditional Japanese culture or even modern pop culture i suggest you check it out. I saw a lot of examples from anime that are taken from this show. Music if you listen corrected samples theme music in anime and dance. it was a little boring but if you go in looking for it you'll see it and love it.

We also got lost in the Gion district and ended up finding a couple of maiko on the street. if you like Geisha/Maiko you better check this area out. apparently you can pay obscene amounts of money to have tea with them. also lots and lots of host/hostesses clubs due to high tourism. we have seem many many tourists in the area, and they stick out even more since there are less locals.

a couple of sociological opinions from myself. I've noticed that Kyoto is much better than Tokyo due to a few factors. The people seemed more relaxed and less in a rush so they'll take the time to talk to one another and even foreigners. the buildings are not over whelming so you have some space to breath and see things. seems to be a little cheaper in certain areas food wise. all in all more my perspective of what Japan should be. Even though Shinjuku was fun and exciting i like the laid back atmosphere here .

day 8 kyoto. we visit the Shogunate Castle in Kyoto (btw everything in Kyoto is within walking distance as far as we can tell, but if you want to bus buy a day pass at 500 yen if you plan to travel more than twice a day on a bus). The castle itself was interesting to visit if you like architecture but I got bored in about 10 mins after walking through the gardens and castles. its fairly cheap andd within walking distance to most hotels.

after the shogunate castle we visited the Manga museum. really worth visiting if you're a big manga or anime fan. you can see how it evolved and read up to 500000 manga volumes for free if you like. we also took a manga drawing class. i fucking blew ass but you get to see/learn some artist techniques so you can appreciate it more. after that we hit the sushi train restaurant. it was awesome just grab a plate at 147 yen and eat to your hearts content. you can order something if its not on the conveyor belt and the sushi chef is awesome yelling out orders and talking it up with the costumers. after dinner, a group of us went shopping for yukata for a friend and i must admit she looked quite ravishing. after that we hit a bar 2 mins from the hotel and the owner a nice lady was very kind to us and drink was cheap at 500 a big bottle or cup of sake. well worth the price. plan on going back saturday when the locals said to come and meet them lol

i heard my friends talking and they said it was 900 yen a day to rent a bike, so its reasonable if you want to visit many areas. also there are fuck load more bikes in Kyoto and they cut you off and everything unlike tokyo.

keep the questions coming guys/gals, it give me a reference point of what to talk about and keep you entertained and aids in my own research if i have questions to answer.

also back to Tokyo from what I noticed. people stare intently at the ground or into nothing while on trains and buses cause its seems to be rude for eye contact, same thing on the street. so its hard as fuck, to approach anyone. in Kyoto the people seem to be friendlier and more relaxed so you can make some eye contact and what not. there are also more noticeable tourists so you have to be careful of making an ass of yourself if you care. we were tonight by being loud in public messing with our friends in the group. got a few death/ gaijin fucktard stares. people seem more eager to practice english here too so it works to your advantage.

My sister is currently living in Osaka and she witnesses stuff like this at least twice a month. It's Japan alright.

Foreigners are usually pretty safe from groping though, the Japanese fear that they'll lose their face, and well, in my sister's case everyone thinks she's the daughter of a mafia boss due to her piercings.

OP, I love this thread. You're having fun and it's good to see that you aren't taking things too seriously. That's the point of traveling, to enjoy yourself to the fullest. Moar pics of architecture perhaps? I really miss Kyoto.

Have you seen the McDonald's signs in Kyoto yet? They're awesome, McDonald's had to turn them dark red because Kyoto didn't want to ruin the image of an old respected city hahaha.

Tokyo JR station! Although there are nicer angles for the photographer from the inside... For the anons' benefit, you can barely see in this pic how the escalator goes down pretty deep. On my first ride down, it was a little bit like descending into Evangelion's Geofront, partly because the architects made that upper floor roof so tall.

Not really a horror story but:

>Tokyo

>late at night walking with my group of friends just derping around after playing games at the arcade, hitting up clubs, eating too much food.

>"Hey guys, we should catch the train back to the hotel since its getting late"

>go down to subway to catch the train, get distracted by group of Japanese guys our age are break dancing in the subway.

>None of us are sober enough to decipher the train schedule on the wall do one of us asks when the last train is

>Get the reply/rough translation "It's dangerous! Last train is here!"

>run like hell and barely catch it.

Fun night though, made my day when we bumped into those guys

happens quite frequently, jap dudes are fucking dirty bastards and its a very patriarchal society so women are second classed in a sense. they have women only cars during peak hours for this purpose. but the last night train out the girls are very much willing to take a grope (friend experience) after they have a few and are feeling randy.

>>598068
agreed the escalators go down very deep and are above waist height to prevent peeping and girls know how to place their bags /hands to prevent it.

alright day 8 or 9? i fucked up my dates on the pics so i forget lol.

today we hit up Kyoto Peace museum. high contract with this museum and Yasakuni Museum. This one admits to crimes Japan did during the war and seeks out a solution for peace. Highly enjoyed this one compared to the others because it admits everything and has very detailed information.

After we went to the university for lunch, noticed that lots of people dont want to sit with gaijins even if its the last seat in the place. Same thing happened on the bus, mind you i take up more than half a seat due to leg space and what not, but a girl stood there for 15 mins instead of trying to squeeze in beside me, which would have been easy since she was very petite.

pic is the rock garden. since i cant take a pic of it all at once i figured id post the wall which has some interesting facts. it was crafted from clay and oil and as the years went by the oil dispersed(wrong word i know) from the clay and created the design seen.

afterwards we headed to the Golden Temple ( Kinkaku-ji) was amazing to look at. but was significantly ruined due to being a tourist hot spot. so many damn kids and locals and foreigners visiting it, you can get the full extent of the visit in due to the bustle around you.

not gonna post pics from the girls in the program they are friends now. the odd girls i usually get pics of are usually no face shown for a reason.

I believe I mentioned this somewhere but i'll remind everyone. Im taking business and asian studies and the course is course offered through my school called Contemporary Japan so instead of sitting in a class for 3 months we cut it down to 3 weeks and explore Japan itself.

>>598267
dont know how often you go out but after anyone gets a few drinks in them, your primal urges come out and you generally obtain a DGAF attitude. so girls are more likely to be aggressive or let things take their course if their interested in you. im sure there are girls out there that would get a kick out it during broad daylight but since Japan seems to be reserved until the sake starts flowing its generally no good to try this. also the last trains are the most packed that you can help but get close to the person standing next to you, they pack it to the brim and them some.

btw im not telling you to go and do this (at least i hope you all won't) im just telling you my cultural experience here, since where I come from in Vancouver, if you get into anyone's personal space bubble be prepared for a shit storm.

pic unrelated since im fucking amazed that they have hybrid trucks like this, and that most cars in Japan are going hybrid

Yeah, groping is NEVER acceptable if it's performed by a foreigner! It just gives them more reason to hate others and continue the anti-foreigner marches (my sister witnesses a protest almost every month where she lives).

Questions for anyone who knows the answers:

Hotels. Can I get a single room and share it with someone, or do you absolutely have to pay per person? The double rooms seem like a total ripoff and I'd like to avoid that if possible. I know the singles are tiny, I don't care, I'm poor and can take turns sleeping on the floor with blankets if we don't both fit in the bed.

As for hostels, will your crap get stolen, or are they much nicer than in other countries? I think that these are often gender segregated but I don't really mind.

What should I eat to not get fat during my 3 week vacation? Avoid katsu, etc, but are there any hidden calorie bombs out there?

Final question: Is Japan a sex tourism spot or something? I thought it was clean but kinda seems that way from this thread.

Well you can, I've done it before (unintentionally when other people have randomly turned up after we've already booked everything and there's no space for the first few days). When you check in it'll have to be just you and then you'll have to inconspicuously sneak your friend in etc.

hotels charge per person in a room, so if you have 2 people in a single room you'll still get charged more. they also have cameras everywhere from my understanding.
dont have info on hostels yet but i would suggest taking anything small and pocket sized with you, passport wallet etc. (its safe but bare in mind other hostel users are foreigners too sometimes) also we had an incident in the hotel yesterday where someones expensive stuffed Hello Kitty doll was stolen (lol wtf?... they clean the rooms here will the whole floor open at once so anyone can walk in at that point)
Japan is both a sex tourism spot and not, just like any other country. it has its red light districts, which are Roppongi in Tokyo and im thinking Gion in Kyoto. these places are packed with hosts/hostesses/strip joint/ massage parlours and so on. usually the girls and guys are not Japanese so you can get sex just not from a local. the locals stick to specific spots of their own. (dont quote me on any of this) once you leave the big cities/ tourist hot spots , this place becomes beautiful and you get a real feel for Japan.

today we are heading to an Onsen (hot spring) i'll report back afterward. bare in mind if you plan to go they are fully strict on the no tattoo rule. my friends have to wear bandages on small wrists and ankle tats.

OP, thanks for all your information so far.

I'll be travelling to Japan by myself in a few month (which us also my first o/s trip).
Currently, I only have a very basic grasp of the language.
How difficult (or easy) would you say it is travel around on a day-to-day tourist basis?
I'm worried I'll get overcome by the absence of English signs and get myself lost and/or disorientated. If that happens, are their 'safe' spots I can go to to ask for help?

I plan on visiting most of the major cities, if that help (ie; Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima, etc), though I also intend on drifting off into more semi-rural areas.
>>
>>598424

Ughhh, so we'll have to get those super expensive rooms with two beds and pay double? Is there a doors open one foot on the floor rule in hotels too? So are there any like cheapo Motel 6 type places over there?

Also I think I'm being misunderstood, trying to avoid the sex tourism spots. I might go to Gion anyway for the historical value unless it's a total repulsive tourist trap now I guess.

My best recommendation to you is as follows:

Go someplace most people rarely go. Book a train out to Shikoku. Fly down to Kagoshima in Kyushu. Set one day aside to ride a train down past Wakayama. Major cities are all fine and good, but some of the most memorable experiences I've ever found during my time visiting and living in Japan was going to the more esoteric or isolated places outside of the tourist "column" that runs from Hiroshima to Tokyo.

Oh, and if you decide to take me up on that advice / plan to explore lower Kyushu, I'd happily give you some more tips in the area (given that it's where I spent most of my time living).
>>
>>598518
Oh! And a.) every important sign (and all federal signs) are both in English and Japanese and b.) while sometimes they just won't want to deal with you. going to police boxes or asking train station attendants will usually result in the most amount of help. Depending on what part of the country your in, regular folk will be just as willing (if not moreso) to help, provided you're not obnoxious about it.

>>598456
this is true but oddly enough we learned in the Edo period that people of high distinction or rank (police, firefighter chief etc) were marked with colorful tattoos so they would stand out. it was honorable until a certain period when they started making criminal instead.

>>598518
its easy to get along day to day as long as you're willing to mime and point and/or draw even. you can ask anyone on the street and they'll generally help you. all train stations have an information desk for travelers and speak some english and the local Koban (police office) are equipped with maps and directions as they double to get people home safely. everything is basically bilingual (english and japanese) except for food menus and at that point you can point at a menu and say "korewa kudasai" and they'll get the point,

>>598534
wtf rule are we talking about here?... regardless the rooms in a business hotel run about 80 a night for two people, and hostels around 25 a night. the more people you bring the higher the price. i wouldnt suggest sneaking people in, as its rude as fuck and gives you a bad name, but you can choose to do what you want.

Hit the onsen today a very fun time. despite being reluctant to be around other guys naked since im shy it was a good time. fucking relaxing as hell. especially if you go at night. rules to onsen following.also be sure to hit the local food stands before you enter they dont allow enter and exiting so get lunch for you go, or you'll pay redonc fees at the restaurant there.

the onsen we went was fairly easy and they spoke some english so it was simple enough. rules are simple enough, take off shoes before entering do not touch the wooden planks. go to the desk get your yukata and towels, and locker key. strip down enter the bath area. you are given two towel a small and big one, take the small one with you, find a spot sit your ass down and WASH everything, since you are a foreigner wash twice even if your small towel gets wet ring it out before entering onsen since its "dirty" water. use the small towel to cover your junk before you enter the onsen. DO NOT LET THE CLOTH TOUCH THE WATER very rude. i fucked up to be honest. put the small towel folded up on your head and sit down in the water, or put it on the edge of the onsen. once done take towel and exit (rinsing off is optional). go to change room put on Yukata and go to the relax room and have a nap, sit in a massage chair or whatever you like. enter and exit onsen whenever you please. do wash again just rinse off as you enter and exit. also with the yukata make the RIGHT side is FOLDED under the LEFT side (other way around is for funerals). you have a choice of going commando or wearing whatever you like under it.

if from Canada some in vaccinated for most of that stuff. Japan is as safe as most countries to travel so there arent many vaccines you need other than the basic ones (hep a b c, tetanus, meningitis[all usually vaccinated for in school] unless you are planning a long stay then just go ot a travel clinic for those.
pic some scenery heading up to the onsen, fucking gorgeous.

also take a lappy or a book to enjoy while you cool down, you can only sit in the bath for 5 mins before you get over heated.

keeps me somewhat sane to be honest. this group tour is taking its toll. as i mentioned before one guy is a literal asspie, another is an obnoxious gaijin (he does it on purpose), the other male is a retard with no social skills and a self centered cunt. we have 2 hipster girls that are complete bitches, 4 chinese that wont socialize until you break them off from their click, indian girl who is awesome to be fair but just always looks upset. everyone is in formed into groups and it gets hard to deal with it sometimes, when you're stuck with an asspie and cunt. also im bad with girls and like one of the ones in the group and she shows interest but is fucking going back and forth between liking me and utterly wanting to kick my ass, and i cant get any breathing room because everyone sees each other all day erryday.
sorry for the shit typing and grammar too, no time for correcting but as i re-read old posts its fucking horrendous.

pic is little booze shots (they love their whiskey here) because its what ive been usual to cope with this trip. i drank once a month in Canada, I've had booze 10 out of the last 11 days on this trip

Speaking of whiskey, have you tried Suntory Whiskey? If so, what's your impression of it vs North American brands?

I've always wondered about that after seeing it in Lost in Translation. Some day, I'll make the effort to get some and try it out.

I've been to Japan three times and I still fail to see the appeal of this communal bathing shit, sento or onsen. I seriously do not see how these orientals enjoy this activity for either hygiene or relaxation, having to sit on a stool and wash from a fucking bucket for the purpose of getting into a bath, nude, with men who are also nude and then simply getting sweaty once again in the hot water and humid bathhouse.

Also call me uncultured but being in a bath with naked strangers is fucking weird.

No wonder Japanese are so passive generally, and that the men are becoming beta and uninterested in women, the hot baths have ruined them, they've boiled themselves impotent.

Yeah I feel ya, it gets sucky when you're stuck with people you don't want to be with for a long time.
Those little whiskey bottles are pretty cute.
Also, drinking is a good habit. If you don't overdo it, it can help you overcome cynicism.

As a scandinavian I definitely see the charm in it. Enjoying a warm sauna and relaxing is one of the best things in life. An onsen is also quite similar to that, though you have to be able to relax I guess.

OP, do you recommend getting a JR pass? Spending $800+ on a 21day ticket is a little much.
I do intend however on travelling across most of the country, so it would be put to good use.

Does the JR pass get you most places in the major cities? (ie; Tokyo) or is the JR simply an arterial line (ie; Tokyo Station > Kyoto > Kobe > Hiroshima > etc)?
>>
>>598904
not Op though, but for that train travel u mentuonend there I would recomend it.
The JR Pass is probably the most awesome ticket u can get, because of that u can't get it in Japan. Its just for tourists.
It repace probably after the second ride

yeah, bad news friend, the trains out of Narita are NE'X or Keisei Skyliners, JR Pass doesn't cover them. You could try the confused tourist act but those train conductors don't take shit.
>>
>>598904

that's like 38 dollars a day, for ALL JR trains including Kodama and Hikari class shinkansen, it covers several JR buses as well, even some ferries! you can go fucking EVERYWHERE with the JR Pass.

but please, do go ahead and buy one way shinkansen tickets that start at 100 bucks and can go up to 230 dollars depending on where you are going (that's EACH WAY FYI) and buy JR train tickets constantly, I'm sure that'll be cheaper.
>>
>>599016
Incorrect.
The Japan rail pass, and the JR East pass is valid on the Narita express.

>>598891
this. also it was more for the experience and not so much on getting into a bath with naked dudes. its also peaceful and relaxing if you over come your personal problems with being seen naked. also its fun just to chat and relax with a bro and not have any judgements. my opinion at least.

>>598904
i have a two week pass at $570 and they said thats more than enough to see most of the otter laying cities/town. you're still going to have to pay for local buses and trains however so for about $10 a day depending on where you go and how the local trains are.

mentioning local trains. HAVE THE EXACT CHANGE they dont give change here. if you plan on stoppign and going a lot buy an all day pass instead. in Tokyo theres Suika cards you refill at the station with money but in Kyoto there is a set fee no matter where you go of 220yen. all day pass is 500 yen get that if you plan on going all over. also trains are the same if you plan to head out of the local areas toward the country areas. its 200 yen a pop.

pic is a bamboo forest we walked through today, i'll have more info after i answer the rest of the questions

For general knowledge they sell 4 liter whiskey bottles and so on at the liquor store for 5000 yen. so around 70$ us/cdn.

>>599135
Also for JR pass users and cheap travelers, you can pre-purchase plane tickets at 100$ a pop to fly to Okinawa or up towards Hokkaido, it can be cheaper than buying a JR pass if you know where you want to go. like the jr pass it has to be done before you leave your country.

we go to Hiroshima then the school trips end. after that my buddy and I plan to head to Kagoshima, Nagoshima, and Fukuoka, and after that Osaka for 10 days. While in Osaka we plan to hit up Kobe, Nara, Nagoya and my family village. then head back towards Tokyo for a few days before flying home.

also more general public knowledge stuff i feel i should mention. If you know it good for you, if not; im glad i can help.
Public washrooms are everywhere for the most part, however lots dont carry soap, so bring hand sanitizer if you're a clean freak. Some carry toilet paper, but someone in the group had to tear a shonen jump mag to get his duty done. also most places have running cold water so invest in a handkerchief to dry your hands after going. on public transport people will generally not want to sit near you because you're foreign especially in tourist hot spots. also they stare at the ground or into the open air to avoid eye contact because its a culture thing about not prying into other peoples business. shit is also very fucking small so if you're a lard ass lose some weight before coming to accommodate yourself. also handicap and elderly unfriendly for the most part due to most old folks being in redonc shape. i had to help a girl in a wheelchair onto the train because theres a large gap between the platform and train and she couldnt pop the wheelie to do it. be a friendly gaijin and you'll be treated better.

alright guys, sorry about missing a day. it was a drunken mess lol.
yesterday we had a free day so the girls wanted to wear kimonos for a day. and being as we're in Japan I figured why not? It was fairly cheap around $30 to walk around town dressed up in a kimono. I have mixed feelings about the event due to it being hot as fuck under all that cloth and the sandles they use to walk are fucking tiring and vengeful fuckers after 2 hours. wearing it was really fucking however, anyone can look pretty good in a kimono. got some mixed reviews from the locals too. some people liked seeing foreigners in kimonos where as when we went for lunch a bitch of a owner (old lady in here 60s) snapped at us and treated us like shit due to her old value of kimonos being formal and Japanese only. after walking around in that all day we headed back and go drunk and have merry night lol.
also best thing to do if you want some where to relax a bit, go to the river with a lunch and sit down and enjoy the scenery. will sitting there for 20 mins we saw herrings, hawks, people playing and fishing. bring something to sit on though, there are still plenty of bugs

Also just remembered. Japan does not have many garbage cans due to the incident (forgot wtf its called with that cult) just recycling. so dont be a retard and try to throw out your trash in recycling or leave it where it is. Be prepared to carry it around in your pocket or hand until you find a garbage can. also if you look you can find 100yen vending machine and can get pop and stuff cheaper than in stores sometimes. also there are drink vending machines everywhere, you need a Pasmo card for beer and smokes though, just ask a local though they generally help out.

today we hit up the local shrines and temples that aren't tourist hot spots. some beautiful scenery heading out of Kyoto. the first place we went to was an old burial grounds for buddhists. if you are religious/superstitious i suggest you stay away the chinese people in the group were furious and scared due to their beliefs. after that we went to a restaurant where the the owner shit talked his competitor across the street because he was in his late 60s, it was funny to hear lol. following lunch we walked to a mountain temple/shrine. it was a nice easy hike up and the view it gorgeous at the top you can see all over kyoto. from there we walked down to the bamboo forest where you take a nice stroll through and have some reprieve from the heat. last we hit up two local shrines dedicated to Hair and Love. The hair one from our teachers explanation is from growth, length and what not or if it relates to your professions like hair dressing. The love shrine was packed with girls buying the trinkets and charms and plaques to write a message to the kami about. not going to knock it but i don't believe in praying for good luck for a specific thing. for dinner tonight we hit a ramen joint where you could pick how you wanted everything from the stalk to the noodle tendeness. if you want the name i can find it out later.
pics incoming of the days trip.

gratitude for the support. as for the funniest thing ive seen so far is probably the weird ass looks we get because the Chinese people in our group are so fucking loud that we are heard two blocks away. other than that is just the weird ass looks of anxiousness people give us when they realize we dont understand wtf fuck either one of us are saying. or there the Asspie in the group that gets drunk off one beer and we have loads of fun with him lol.

pic is of a "love stone" Story has it that if you can walk from one side to the other around 25 feet, with your eyes closed your love wish will come true. you have to start by touching one rock then walk and touch the other. it also has some belief that you need to ask for aid while on your journey, intertwining it with Japanese culture of always having someone with you. My love for /trv/ lol.

day 12? anyone keeping track for me.

today was a special day. we were allowed to attend a Buddhist Zen workshop where the second in command Priest (spoke excellent English) taught us about the temple and zen. We did a zen meditation which fucking sucked because I am not flexible and I have a back injury so i flopped out after like 4 mins of the 20 we were suppose to meditate. Next we did a calligraphy lesson and go to write something neat down and have it stamped and put into a wall hanger. after that we got a treat of a lunch because they prepared the meal for us because we came so far (some sarcasm here, it was all vegetarian and you're not suppose to leave anything on your plate and some of the stuff was hard to keep down)

this particular rock garden has 15 rocks 7 in the light and 8 in the dark and you're suppose to interpret it a having dual life aspects in the good and bad and so on.

after that we went to the Silver Pavillion, the second visited site and probably the best place to go to in my opinion despite the loads of crowds. it is trully in the zen spirit. simple yet refined. you're suppose to view it at night but most of the time you cant so you'll have to make due with sunlight. it has some awesome walkways to take up into the hills and get a great view of the city and the silver shrine itself. highly recommend this one.

after the silver pavillion we hit up, Kiyomizu probably the biggest and tallest one in Kyoto. i highly suggest hitting up this one despite the tourist trap of billions of overpriced shops and people there. its well worth the trek up but be prepared for a walk up stairs and uphill. the views are amazing from the top however and it has many little shrines and kami dedications, such as the love stone and luck and so on. i had fun and it was a tourist rape fest so check it out.

after that we hit up a kyoto style dinner. nothing special except small portions and loads of veggies. if you wanna eat cheap and lots hit up a local supaa (super market) and buy food thats ready made and snacks. or live out of a konbini and know the register clerks lol. craving beef so i might pay the redonc fee of $35 for all you can eat sukiyaki beef and have at it. drinking time, catch you later trv.

alright guys/gals. today we had a neat day. we visited the 10000 Torii Gate shrine in Inari. It's a huge hot spot for locals and tourists a like and amazing to see all the torii gates in one place. if you visit it theres about an two hour hike up the path with stops along the way where you can rest and buy things and so on. we didnt get to hike it all due to time limitations, i might go back later and see the end of it.

afterwards we went to a Sake Brewery/Museum. best part of the day, of course was the free samples. They are given freely but i would suggest limiting yourself to one/two rounds to be polite. It was neat seeing the way sake was produced during the pre-edo period of Japan and how its still basically made the same way. Also the distilling tanks were huge, i'd say around 10 feet tall. also the sake they have for sale in the gift shop is cheap but high quality so load up if you like sake or plum wine.

If you like relaxing and cruising down the river in an old sake transportation boat, there's a chance just down the way to do so. it is relaxing as hell and the scenes along the banks are beautiful. plus the ship's crew are generally fairly relaxed and will chat you up if you try broken Japanese with them.

after that we headed back home. keep in mind if you do this you're looking at around 1000yen ($12) in metro/bus fees so it does add up with entrance fees and lunch and so on. I managed to piss off the girl I like to an extreme extent and am now in the process of patching it up, but that's another story. For dinner my buddy and i hit up Lotteria the local burger joint, i would suggest against going here. The food is small and expensive for what you get and not filling. Hit up a curry or ramen joint if you're looking for filling food, i think even mcdonald's would have been better. also their fountain drinks are fucked up, if you get a cola on tap its missing something, Im thinking its the carbonated soda water or something but it tastes really off to me. Speaking of curry we had a late night snack at CoCo curry, much better and filling and the staff was very helpful. Im a little disconcerted by Japan's staffing policy the staff in these places are tightly packed behind a counter and they are busy when they have orders but other wise stand around staring at the ground or in the air to avoid eye contact but its still weird having someone stand in front of you while you eat lol.

also i cant remember if i mentioned this or not, but if you're not a Japanese you're going to stick out here no matter what. i get some dirty looks sometimes if i mention im half Japanese by the older generations since Japan is very purist in that sense. so please try to limit the amount of attention you draw to yourself by for example, no talking loud in public places, being on the phone on the bus/train and so on. chinese people tend to stand out the most because they can be heard a mile away due to their culture but try to tone it down if possible. and for the love of god dont come here and say "im a gaijin i dont have to learn their customs" like one of the chicks in our group, it just looks bad on you and the rest of us.

also you will be greeted every time you enter any store, just a nod of the head will do or you can just konnichiwa/ konbanwa/ohayoo.

for those of you worried about running into the public washrooms with no toilet paper in them, there are hundreds of people handing out tissue packets at the stations, just just one as you walk out for your day and you'll be set for an emergency.

also just a general thing for those of you for are too lazy to read up on things. when entering places that are more traditional and you have to take off your shoes. make sure you either have slip on shoes or be prepared to tie your shoes a lot, especially at temples. that being said, when you enter a doorway DO NOT WALK on the wooden door frame with your shoes, it is a no no. step over the entrance way and into the "shoe take off area" (forgot the damn name). here you simply loosen your shoes and walk towards the edge of the wooden platform, Do not let your socks touch the ground, slip your shoe off and place your foot on the platform and then the other, it is seen as a very dirty thing to touch the outside ground with your inside socks. also when your shoes are off either place them in the rack of near the wooden board/platform face out so you can just step into your shoes and be off. if someone knows more about this or wants to post an example pic it would be cool, since i dont have fast internet here.

that's the boat we floated down the river in.

>>600320
most public places youre fine running around in socks or bare feet but if you enter someones home that you're not familiar with you should (if you know in advance) put on clean socks and use their slipper if they give you some. i have a hard time fitting any slippers here though my feet are big. also lots of temples and places that let you run around in bare feet/socks have toilet slippers. do use these its is very "dirty" if you dont. again dont touch the wooden platforms with these when entering/exiting.

i figured that since ive been visiting so many goddamn temples and shrines I should write a bit on proper etiquette.

While attending a Shinto shrine, you wash your hands before entering the shrine area. Fill up the ladle and then was your LEFT hand first, then switch to the right. then pour some water in your hand and rinse your mouth out(optional) and spit it in the bottom drain. Then fill the ladle again and drip it onto the handle of the ladle to clean it for the next person. Then proceed to go up to the shrine and pray. Toss your donation in the box first then you bow twice in a row, clap twice, make your prayer, and bow again once. not sure about ringing the bells but i just read you're suppose to do it before anything to get the attention of the kami. dont quote me on this.

For buddhist temples it goes without saying shut the fuck up and dont make noise lol. buy the incense and light it and place it in the brazier. waft the smoke towards yourself, and then waft it towards parts of your body you think you need improvement or help with such as your heart for health or head for knowledge and so on. proceed inside.
go make your donation and place you hands together in front of your chest. make your prayer and bow and leave.
Buddhist temples are usually dull to look at but have amazing gardens and ponds and natural settings. im jaded towards temples and shrines right now though.

after the palace we went to National Treasury. High recommendation, you'll see some cool shit there that is not really widely posted on the web due to no pictures and what not. Inside there are huge buddhas and other deitys. Best place to see here in my opinion.

After the treasury we went to the daibatsu in Nara Park. Place is fucking crowded my god. There are deer everywhere however and its fucking cool to be able to pet and feed them at your leisure however its dirty as fuck with them there. shit and piss errywhere. The daibatsu buddha was cool to see and he had his followers beside him, gotta say they enjoy using their gold in decoration. The best part of Nara park besides the deer was having the local school kids coming up to you and asking you questions in English. Some of them (the girls especially) are really ballsy and will ask you straight up but some of them are so shy its cute because you can tell them really want to ask you the question but just can't untie their tongues. Just be polite to them and they'll love you. Some girl ran up and said hello! how are you! and then proceeded to high five us. That floored us.

After Nara park we headed to another Shinto shrine dedicated to love. A money trap but it was beautiful to walk through as this one was more traditional and had to be slightly hiked to get to, and having deer around just added to the scenery. Check out Nara, but im not sure how well it will go by yourself since we had a guided tour bus today.
>>
how do u tell Shinto and Buddhist shrines apart at first sight`?
Also, is it possible to get the Shinto explained by there shrine people like Buddhist preists do?
If u happen to know I would like to hear your thoughts about that
>>
Have you been ambushed by the ten billion children doing their English assignments yet, OP? Hiroshima's peace park was absolutely infested with them yesterday, and we were hit up a few times in Kyoto too.

Before the meiji restoration there was in reality little difference between shinto and buddhist temples.

And there will often be a shinto temple inside the grounds of a buddhist temple, and vice versa.

That being said, if you see a torii it's likely to be shinto.
>>
>>601006
but even the Tori come in different ways, like with a straight top or with a bowed..., well, I will see for myself I think
>>
>>601009
The gate to a buddhist temple will often have å roof. It can't relly be confused with a torii.
But again, you will find buddhist temples with torii.

to be honest i have a real hard time telling the difference myself, as there are usually both within the same grounds. Buddhist temples usually have less adornment though

In Nara we saw a billion and a half but lots of them are afraid to run up to me due to being big and sunglasses on all the time. my buddy is white and not as intimidating as i am and gets swarmed. that being said we're heading to the peace park tomorrow so i'll prepare myself mentally for this event.

alright today we landed in Hiroshima. not quite sure about my feelings towards this place yet. we're located basically in a central area so there are soap lands, host bars, clubs and everything else within a 2 min walk from here. seems to be many hooligans out but it might be due to the weekend. and it seems to be a real foreigner hot spot everywhere i looked i can spot a tourist. and there are so many money pits of theme bars and what not and billions of hosts and dirty old salary men out that its not my scene, mind you im dead sober lol. we spent a good hour or two in an arcade messing around with the video games that we couldnt understand. the best game so far is a literal FLIP THE TABLE game where you flip your shit and destroy an area lol.

ill give a report back tomorrow when i get a real feel for this place. any questions in the mean time?

Not OP but I was vacationing in Japan a couple weeks ago. There were school kids absolutely everywhere, especially the big tourist destinations. You could tell when they had an assignment because they would hover around building up the courage to come talk to us.

I quite liked Hiroshima, although it more had the feeling of being a nice place to live rather than a nice place to tourist. Didn't visit the parts marked on the map as being dodgy/drinking areas though.

>>601098
Miyajima is the other obvious tourist attraction. Miyajima+peace park takes up a day quite nicely.

Alright all. sorry for the delay. been rather busy. Hiroshima is quite interesting sho since its has more open space and the shops are located in one area and the same with restaurants.

So two days ago we did what everyone comes to hiroshima for, the Memorial Park and Museum and to see the A-bomb structures. Highly recommend this, you'll see two sides of the coin for how Japan represents the war here. Its also very insightful to see how Japan changed/ wants to continue to change towards no nuclear warfare and so on. Also the park is very interesting to see and you can actually walk through it so its the first bit of nature ive been able to interact with in a while without having to worry about damaging the grass.

Hiroshima is fairly small so you can save some money and walk everywhere if you wish. we spent most of the days walking around seeing everything. Also we spent most of the time in the shopping area/ arcade. you can experience quite a bit of Japanese culture sitting around those areas. The arcades get packed at night so you can meet / see people and how they interact. Drinking wise we've smartened up and just bought stuff at the liquor store and get lit up in the hotel room then hit the streets. There are too many punk ass kids and Yakuza in this area for us to want to venture into the countless hostess clubs/strip bars and so on.

pic is the monument to Sadoko the girl who folded the 1000 paper cranes for her disease but still died.

the second day in Hiroshima we hit up Miyajima. Highly suggest heading here just to see the Shrine and its a day vacation spot. Lots of hiking trails and things to do. some water sports and what not and lots of people out to meet, plus you can play with the holy messenger deers scattered everywhere here. Careful its a money pit though so keep track of your money if you go its easy to spend. Its also hot as hell there right now so bring appropriate items like water and hats and what not.

day 3 and last day in Hiroshima. hit up a ramen place where you pick all the things that go into the bowl from the noodle tenderness, soup stock and so on. It's awesome and filling and you get your own little alcove to eat so you dont disturb everyone and get looked at while youre eating. It was a free day so we hit up Hiroshima castle. We walked there since it was a gorgeous day here, and find some neat things along the way. As we headed out of the city core we found cheaper and better food and more a small town feel. The castle itself was nothing special but you could hoof it up the 5 tall ass stories and see the designs and history of the castle and Hiroshima. Also they have samurai armor and katanas on display and you can view hiroshima from the top. only cost us 320 yen plus a drink or two for the walk there so it's cost worthy. Also got some info on my personal trip afterwards and found out this is the dead travel season so you can basically walk onto any train and travel until the peak period in July.

Hiroshima as a whole, you really only need two days to see it all if that. If you're fast or are willing to pay a bit for transportation you can see everything you want in that time frame. Can wait for tomorrow, we head for Fukuoka.

to be honest depending on your preferences and the like you can spend 7 days in Tokyo and see something new each day, but I would recommend heading to Kyoto for a day or two to get some traditional culture in you as well. There are some day trips in Tokyo you can take as well to kill some time. Akiba takes most of a day to explore and there are so many museums and shrines and what not. It's really up to you and your personality / preferences.

alright all, first day on our own. my friend and i hit up Fukuoka for 3 days. we intended to stay in another business hotel but it could only accommodate so we hit up a local Ryokan (Japanese style in) we've sleeping on futons on the floor. To be honest its awesome here. the rooms are huge and spacious and peaceful much better than a business hotel. it also a public bath which is relaxing after a couple of glasses of sake. if you think your back or body can handle sleeping on a futon on the floor i suggest to fully hit up a Ryokan. they are cheap too around $22 a night.
Exploring Fukuoka was quite interesting, the city is small you can walk almost everywhere and i suggest you do since the bus seems to be more expensive than the other cities ive been to. we went to the local major park it was fucking huge. its tiered so you can walk up 4 tiers of walls it bit of a hike but worth the views and seeing things. we had to leave early so we couldnt explore to the full extent. afterwards we hit up local food joint, if you're feeling lucky you can find some good food and cheaper than food chains. also if you find a proper place to stay hit up the local supaa and buy some cheap food and coo, they are cheap and to be honest im getting sick of dining out. local bars are awesome the owners try to chat you up a bit and they generally let you relax and chill out instead of forcing you to drink or leave.

to be honest i would suggest trying each combination. ive been going to ramen joints every day or two, and i try a different combination each time. myself i suggest if its you first e house, time try the recommended by the store, then as you experience this try out a combination that will suit you more. personally i like a thicker oily soup base, with firmer noodles, no spices, green onion sliced thin, and extra chashu and noodles cause im a big guy and like my food.

also just some info on food joints that are chains. they have english menus and you can 'create your own' i do this with the curry house chains. i order extra rice and tonkatsu (fried pork, chicken or beef) and this fills me up and only costs an extra 300 yen or so. although to balance the extra food intake i decide to walk home or whenever we go so i dont get retarded huge while being here.
>>
Hey, can I ask what those "ramen tickets" are about? I've seen them being used in a couple of shows and now here.
>>
>>602323
could u recomend some of those chains by names? Would be much easier to recognise them
and I think u got lucky there >>602318
with the price, when u google ryokans they are most of the time more expensive, or are those just the tourist traps?

Interesting thread. I'm not a /trv/ lurker so excuse my ignorance, but I found it informative that japan travelling is 'mildly' tolerated here.

Might I suggest to view this thread?
http://chanarchive.org/4chan/a/12194/a-nons-in-was-akihabara

It's funny to see that people ask the same shit, all the time. Also funny how in /a/ that a travel thread dies in 6 hours.

Also OP, I spent a month and did the same things as you did, Miyajima, Kyoto, Tokyo, etc etc. I highly suggest you do something off the beaten track. (I'm not saying what you are doing is bad in any way, just saying that doing something very unique may be a interesting perspective) I mean, I enjoyed the tourist experiences, but it's the random things we did that didn't feel touristy that I remember fondly.

That said, its all fun. Spending only 400 yen to ride the Narita express. Hearing a club girl go 'tuskette!' playfully to her friend while a hostel mate of yours is trying to pick her up. Eating hot kitsune udon outside at a park cafe at 30+ degrees C. Going through random buildings, shopping centres and a neighborhood graveyard to reach a shrine. Staying at a MacDonalds with a bunch of other people to wait for the trains to run. Haha, travelling is fun...

alright guys (im assuming most of you are guys, since femanons dont speak out much)

today was a total fucking mulligan on our part. we went to the local islands and were totally disspointed. no one there maybe 20 people altogether. in hind sight it is midweek here and off season. dont plan your trip to tourist spots during this time. we went to Uminonakamichi which is where Wonderland is and the beach spots. you have to pay to enter the beach areas here so plan accordingly or else youre going to pay a 400 yen entrance fee and then some. we saw some cool things here like the giant ferris and a water park basically but the area is meant for families so dont go here if you want some hot beach action with bikini girls. there are other islands for that.

tonight we spent 3 hours searching for a gaijin bar jsut to chat up local people and we couldnt find it for hte life of us. we just looked it up and it turns out we were a block off from it the whole night. in hind sight research well before going to find these places or else get stuck looking for it. also pissed off a karaoke place by going in there for 10 mins and leaving cause we couldnt figure out the controls and not paying after the chased after us. we would have payed but we spent the 10 mins trying to find the english songs and couldnt do it so we left. the karaoke places have all you can drink and you can sleep there if you wish after a long night jsut make sure you can understand whats going on.

also forgot to mention. if you're feeling friendly// hungry hit up a local ramen stand, the people there are fucking awesome. the food is better than most places and cheaper. also the alcohol is worth the price they charge and they chat you up when possible. we have a pic somewhere ill have to get my buddy to post it.

>>602344
basically when you enter a chain ramen restaurant you put your money in the machine and push the button and you order the "base" ramen which is noodle chashu green onion and soup base. you can choose to add more chashu, noodles, onion and other things if you push more buttons. each choice you make adds a ticket in the end, so if you order the base ramen, extra noodles, and chashu you will have 3 tickets. you go to your seat and place the tickets on the buzzer which you push to get the servers attention. however, fill out the ramen sheet first for the base, firmness, green onion choice and so on before doing this so you get the ramen the way you like it. if you need more clarification ill do it tomorrow, a little tipsy right now.

>>602377
SORRY in advance to everyone. we found out today that we only paid for one night t the Ryokan at 3250yen. we thought we paid for 3 night but were informed otherwise tonight. ryokan's are still much better than business hotels regardless of the price they off more space and freedom so i am glad to pay the extra 500 yen or so a night compared to a twin room business hotel. for ryokan;s in general the more people you have the cheaper it is per night. i still suggest staying in one for a night or two if you have the chance.

we've been doing that but I jsut haven't been posting much because we haven't had those amazing experiences yet due to being in the study tour. we've finally got on our own so we're hoping for those moments to happen. we've been walking everywhere and exploring as much as we can but it's easy as hell to get lost and we're generally tired after a day in the sun here. now that we're on our own we are trying to get away from the tourist experiences but some of them are worth it. if you come around again in the next couple of day i'll hopefully have some different things to say (hopefully) also /a/ is shit for information which is why im doing this. any suggestions for places to go and see that are safe as a foreigner?

just some general knowledge now. bring a mp3 players it will save your ass if you're not use to constant noise and bustle. also never point at things directly with chopsticks or stab your chopsticks into things, its fucking rude as shit here. you can bring the bowl of food to your mouth to avoid dropping your food. try to eat everything on your plate its rude to leave food. i had a list but i forgot most of it after drinking tonight. hopefully it will come back to me in the morning.

Tricky to suggest a place, since I personally didn't go to Fukuoka. Where are you heading next? And how many days are left? No need to fear for safety if you are in a small group and don't act like an asshole. Also yep, study tours / tour groups are lame. (Unless you like being safe in a structured environment.)

A suggestion I would have is to stay at hostels. You already experienced a ryokan and business hotels. Hostels are real fun, having young people in a common area from a variety of backgrounds provide interesting experiences. Remember, they are all travelers too and are there to have fun, and love to meet other people to do new things with. Only problem with this is you just 'go with the flow' so if you are a detailed itinerary planner, this isn't a good option.

Oh and stay in a capsule hotel for 1 night only, just to say you have.
