I want to walk around the Earth.

I'm not a hippy, I'm currently in Med school. The plan is to work/train as an anaesthetist after graduating until I've saved enough money to sustain 4-5 years of not working (50-100KGBP within the 9years of postgrad training it takes to become a consultant/attending.)

I've given an outline of my route...it's mostly just symbolic to show a general outline. Obviously when I reach a new landmass, I'll try to visit as many countries as possible/ taking into account any visa issues/wars,etc. (dual nationality: British/Bangladeshi, so I figure most countries will let me in).

The chilean coast is antipodean to parts of china so I figure it counts as a proper round the world.

Hiking the Appalachian trail this summer to try out my first long distance hike.

What say you /trv/, is it time for a round the worl discussion? feel free to share any resources you have.

Will check back in, in 8 hours.

forgot to add: the blue lines indicate flights/ferries. I'll be doing it solo, partnering up with random people along the way.

Heres a map of the wiki image of the antipodes.

here's another aspect of the antipodean map.

original stimuli for the plan was the pacific crest trail and something I read aobut long ago about the chileans creating a national trail through their country. Europe has extensive international trails, so it's SEAsia+far east+middle east that'll be the most difficult logistically.

Starting from today, safe sex all the way. Can't afford to have a child dragging me down.

Well. Its a good plan but what are you going to do with that money?
You cant just carry it around some places in Africa, and some places are long distance without bank/ATM.

which country are you starting with?

Also, i'd seriously plan a better route through Sahara and Australia. Thats desert without help for miles and miles. You cant just decide to walk through that. How are you going to carry water?

    Jackpot, indeed.
    >> Anonymous 03/01/11(Tue)12:51 No.441762
with regards to money: I can only hope that over 15 years of development will mean I can access an ATM every 2-4 weeks. I'll be carrying non-perishable food, bought at wherever I find an ATM, so I'll need a minimum amount money between resupplies.

Sahara and austrailian desert? I'll think about this closer to the time, once i'm actually on the ground.

Is there anyway to cross Africa without going through the desert? worst comes to worst, I'll take a boat around the desert.

Then again, who knows what the world will be like in 2020!

I'd say that you should start your trip from the American East Coast instead of Alaska, and then head to the west coast and continue to South America from there. Much more interesting.
Or after reaching Vancouver, head east-southeast until you reach Chicago, then head to the Gulf of Mexico and follow it to Mexico.

OP, if you're going to wait 10-15 years for this to happen, then by that time, you might have completely left your plan to the wayside. Lots of things can happen to you to change your perspectives along the way, namely the fact that by age 35, if you have that much money, you'll probably be tied down to the life you have.

Who knows. I just think you should do parts of the trip during breaks in school since you've started. Or take a gap year and do it with less money.

    >>441760 Me again.

15 years of development may well cut it for a lot of the world, however, I'd imagine that there will still be a lot of Sub Saharan and Central Asian areas, especially rural ones, without them. I'd say travellers cheques, but i dont think general shops would take them. The problem is, the slow pace of walking means you might be going days without seeing other people... you'll really need to get good detailed maps and plan that one. Or maybe find someone who can drop off food each night (in a poor country thats easily done)

My dad walked and hitchhiked round Europe when he was about 18 and Hippyish, and he always told me to pack cardboard boxes in winter- You can build them over the snow and then lay your sleeping bag on top. In Africa you'll need to find secure places to sleep- I've been and believe me, you would not believe the amount of Elephants/Leopards/General things that will kill you. Again, i'd try and hit a town every night. Also, one of my mates dads got held hostage for 2 years in Niger, so go down East Africa (though probably not Mozambique or Zimbabwe)

I'd cut out Scandanavia and head through the Balkans instead. Scandinavia will be very cold and snowy. Also, i've never been but i've heard Russia is pretty Racist. Not sure if your visibly half Bangladeshi but if you are you may have problems, especially since you'll be in rural areas. A lot of Western Russia is quite flat as well, where as the Balkans make a more interesting gradient.

Been to Morroco, the Atlas mountains are great. But walking through the Sahara kills. You can head down the Nile, which is quite interesting. dont go around the western side of the Sahara, Morrocan troops wont let you.

Where are you going to keep documents etc? you'll need somewhere very safe. Maybe theres a way of mailing them forward to your next destination or something...
