I'm graduating next spring, but before I go to grad school I want to travel a bit. I've decided to teach English abroad for a year or two, but I don't want to do the whole Japan/South Korean cliche. I'm leaning toward France, but any European country would be nice. Is there anything I should know? Websites? Programs?
    >> Anonymous 05/27/10(Thu)13:41 No.324451
I think in Europe you'll find it's a proper job you have to go and find, rather than an occupation where you might get hired in your home country like JET.

Have any teaching experience? TEFL certificate?
    >> Anonymous 05/27/10(Thu)13:43 No.324452
No. I'm graduating with an English degree, if that helps. I've heard that the TEFL was a waste of money.

You can't just go and teach in most countries without relevant qualifications. What languages do you speak? That obviously restricts where you can teach.

Not OP. But I'm very interested in teaching abroad. I speak English and a little Spanish.
Do you need to speak the language to teach English in Europe? I only ask because it's not a requirement for South Korean or Japanese teaching positions.

Do you want to know why so many more /trv/ler's are interested in teaching English in Asian countries than Europe? It's not because they're weabo faggots that want to impress the tiny women with their 5 inch cocks, it's because Asian countries have lower qualifications and better pay. Average salary for a month in South Korea is roughly 3k USD, in France you'd get around 1.2k USD.

It's just better to teach in Asia. Of course if you're not interested in the money, you can get a few semesters of French under your belt and hope you get really lucky.

You can make like $1,750 a month max in Korea but the living costs are so low you can't spend all of that since you will likely have rent provided.

Yeah, it is way, way, way easier to get a job though. France, or most places in Europe will require some serious qualifications and a near-native grasp of their language and like... being an actual teacher.

OP here. So now, I'm trying to decide between teaching English in South Korea or in Japan.

I'd like a little advice on this one. From experience, which position do you think would be more culturally rewarding, which language will be more useful, and which country has a more interesting history?

korea's culture is dull in comparison to japan's. you can see all there is to see in korea, culturally speaking, in around a month, while in japan it will take you around 3. honestly both korean and japanese are deadend languages; they arent spoken much anywhere other than in their respective countries. but in my opinion, skorea has a lot more room for future development as opposed to japan which seems like its reached its peak. when it comes to history, i feel like korea is the most interesting. as i looked into it, i start to get the feeling that korea itself had a huge, albeit passive, role in starting the first world war, which eventually led to the second. so up to you to choose OP.

1750 is not a great wage in korea. my bro made 2.2 mill won per month teaching and it was not considered a good wage unless you included the free housing, plane ticket, and 13 month bonus at the end of the year then it was "OK" wage. my gf is korean and makes about 2600 usd per month which she said was average ish with a lib arts degree. soeul is expensive outside seoul and busan 1750 might be alright.

5th most expensive city in the world for expats is seoul:

Not so much the money. I have no knowledge of any language other than English, and while I theoretically have a year in which to learn French, I simply have too much on plate. Most Asian programs will introduce me to a beautiful and unique foreign culture while providing me with the job experience I'll need to compete in the European markets. I plan to spend a year in Asia, save money, then head to France. This way I'll have experience and the money to kick around the country for work. From what I've read it's best to actually be in the country, if you're looking for a teaching position.

i also remember being taught in uni by one of those native who got hired just because he was a native. i remember how bored he looked while teaching, only paying attention to pretty female students. so for god's sake, remember teacher is a job that requires true interest into education and higher skills than just being able to get a fucking TEFL or whatever. otherwise i hope your students will plant a bomb in your car.

No. I mean basic things like, as a young man, not being able to get a decent job - shitty job market. the real estate market is also really expensive, so young couples will contract a heavy mortgage on 30 years at least just to buy a small house in some shithole, or they'll live in their parents home until 30. in france, if you have a job and if you bought a property before 1995, you're safe. if you've just graduate, look for settling a life, emigrate or get stuck in a mcjob. i'm sure other eurofags understand what i mean (italy, spain, greekfags to name a few of them). generazione 1000 euro.

social programs or not, France has lived with a 10% unemployment rate for thirty years. such rate would make americans rage, as it actually does (did?) during the crisis. but in france the burden is felt mainly on the shoulders of young people, because in france it's hard to fire so employers avoid to fire oldfags while they dont hire newfags. another reasons too but it's not an economics thread.

I wouldn't say that, per se. It's just a different social climate. In the U.S. young people are processed from birth by MTV and mass marketing so all they care about are spray-on tans, material possessions, and celebrities. And while those forces do exist in France it's not quite as extensive. The French are born revolutionaries. They're passionate dreamers.

After all, some Japanese companies will need to do business with German companies. There won't be as large a market, but then again there won't be as many German's looking for work.

So, allow me to be ignorant here, but how exactly do you teach English in a country where you don't know the native language?

In Japan at least the students foreign teachers are given are not 100% beginners.

In Europe, you don't. In Japan students are required to take as many English classes as the average American student. But, while these classes do involve spoken English on occasion, they are primarily focused on the composition of the English language(I.E. How it is written and organized). So when a Japanese student graduates they can read English, and to a lesser extent understand it when spoken, BUT they cannot speak it properly...also when a /trv/ talks about teaching English in Asia, they're talking about becoming the (native)English teacher's assistant.(I.E. the trained monkey that talks American to the class.)

How's Portugal during the summer? My girlfriend and I were planning on hitting the Golf of Mexico, but thanks to big oil that's out. How are the beaches, and what attractions does it have?
