76 KB Stereotypical White Person Backbacking Trip Anonymous 03/27/10(Sat)19:29 No.293602
Sometime this summer I'm thinking about backbacking for a month. I'm talking backpack + tent, not hostels and houses. I've already done one of these, but it was only for a week.

So, advice. Where to go, what to bring for a month trip, etc.

Yosemite, yellowstone, smoky mountain nat'l park?
    >> Anonymous 03/27/10(Sat)20:32 No.293626
1 mth is a long time.

how do you plan on carrying all the stuff and replenishing supplies?
    >> Anonymous 03/27/10(Sat)21:35 No.293655
I'm cheating. I'll have money with me, and $20 dollars lasts a week in California. So, as far as supplies go, I'm not too worried. Most of the places I'd like to go are second world, so I'm not too worried about that.

    It's not a wilderness adventure.
    >> Anonymous 03/27/10(Sat)23:45 No.293697
where did you go for a week?
    >> Anonymous 03/28/10(Sun)15:23 No.293988
Up the northern coast of California. So things like language, culture, and money exchange were a non-issue.

As far as what I plan on bringing, it's not much. Mostly clothes, maybe some cooking stuff. Definitely a poncho. Maybe a couple books? Smaller backback for day shit. Clothes line. Toilet paper. Minor first aid. Water purifier stuff. Aspirin.

I think different countries have different laws about aspirin, though.

Probably a wall socket adapter if I bring a phone.

    I'm sure I'll need vaccinations.

This would be the first time I'm doing something like this out of the country, so anyone who's got advice from doing something like this would be nice. I think I have a pretty good list, but anything learned from experience would be appreciated.

Hep A and B vaccinations need 2 jabs 2 weeks apart. Stay away from south esat asia as there are still shit loads of mines and unexploded bombs even in fairly well travelled areas, in the country side do not stray from the path for any reason.
    >> Anonymous 03/28/10(Sun)16:39 No.294029
What path? And SE Asia is kinda where I wanted to go. I guess I'll have to find out how large of an issue mines are.

Any path. There are plenty of people missing arms and legs in some areas for a damn good reason.
    >> Anonymous 03/28/10(Sun)16:53 No.294037
I never considered that. Especially because Vietnam/Cambodia were my top candidates...
    >> Anonymous 03/28/10(Sun)17:36 No.294063
South Korea or Thailand seem to be a good bet for you then. Though, Thailand is supposed to have alot of crime.

    HAHAHAHAHAH

Have you ever left your house?
    >> Anonymous 03/28/10(Sun)17:55 No.294078
Actually, I was thinking about Laos, too. But I seem to remember them having a big problem with landmines.
    >> Anonymous 03/28/10(Sun)17:56 No.294079
Make sure you have money for travel. Hitching isn't really god to do in foreign countries. Especially if you're a whiteboy :)
    >> Anonymous 03/28/10(Sun)18:02 No.294082
Yeah, I plan on taking alot of public transportation. The big issue is going to be cost. I don't know how much it would be in other countries.

I am planning on doing some what of the same thing, here's my basic route so far.

I doubt you could do this for a month and I was planning for a year. Depending on you fiances though you could take my route for dirt cheap.

they have a lot of UXO in the east, along the Ho Chi Minh Trail, but few travellers bother to go out that far. I have never heard of a foreigner stepping on a mine. Sure the locals do it sometimes, usually plowing a field after rainy season when the uxo have resettled.
    >> Anonymous 03/28/10(Sun)19:14 No.294115
Why do you think I couldn't make it?
    >> Anonymous 03/28/10(Sun)19:15 No.294116
And what kind of planning di you do for a year?
    >> Anonymous 03/28/10(Sun)21:11 No.294166
Check wikitravel. Tyeh've got good resources for this kind of thing.
    >> Anonymous 03/28/10(Sun)21:35 No.294182
Take insect repellant. You'll thank me.
    >> Anonymous 03/28/10(Sun)21:39 No.294185
Yeah. I guess I'll need malaria and dengue meds, huh? The two biggest things I'm worried about are illnesses and crime/bad cops.
    >> Anonymous 03/29/10(Mon)14:00 No.294526
    >>294185
    No

Unless you're going to be living in a remote village for a few years you don't need anti-malarials. Don't know what info you have on them, but a lot of people think they prevent malaria. They don't. they lessen the symptoms. So you can still get malaria while on meds, but not know it. It'll incubate in your body and get worse. Best thing to do is just get malaria and then the docs can treat you right away for it. If your drugs are hiding some symptoms you won't be properly diagnosed.
    >> Anonymous 03/29/10(Mon)20:18 No.294646
I've done minimal research, but the CDC reccomends to start taking Anti-malarials 4-6 weeks before.

I guess its something to look into then.
