Im going to Beijing between 10-24th June this year and i have some questions! What is there to do there? I know about the cultural places to visit but havent got a clue where to the best shopping and best night life is? Is it any places in beijing where you can chill out and swim? Any nice lakes or pools?
    Cheers

I wouldn't go swimming in Beijing, you can at the olympic venues but it costs a fair bit of money so I'd probably avoid it. Theres pleanty to do though and a lot of markets and shopping areas.

For more cultural shopping then I suggest near the Lama Temple and older areas of the city close to the forbidden city, there are some nice places to eat around that area too. Shopping wise I would ask around and go to the silk and pearl markets as well as asking locals. As for night life I would try either Sanlitun Bar Street or Wangfujing Street.

Go to the Tiantan Park and Summer Palace just as cultural places, I assume you'd go to the Forbidden City and Tiannamen square.

Pretty much, but I was there on the cheap and honestly, I could swim at a lot of nicer places back home.

You should check out Crab island resort (city seaview) wich is the biggest man-made beach in china, located in beijing.

Truth. Coco Banana and White Rabbit are great places for a night out. White Rabbit tends not to really kick off untill 3-5am though. Dunno why. White Rabbit is just off San Li Tun though which is one of the two main bar areas, the other is Hou Hai but those places will try to milk tourists hard because they are round the lake and pretty touristy area. The bars on main San Li Tun north street will try to milk you too though so avoid it and take a turn to the grottier area of the side that is actually a shit ton more fun and cheaper too. Smugglers is great. Kind of feels like a Brittish pub/bar a bit. Just not total old man pub feeling.

For shopping, Ya Shou (also by San Li Tun), Xidan and the Silk Market are all good but will also try to rip off tourists. Don't pay more than 100rmb for shoes (60 is average, 100 is for fake Air Force Ones and other flashier things) and 3 shirts for 100rmb too. You can maybe get a tie thrown in for that 100 too if you try hard enough.

Smugglers! Fuckin ay, brother. I was there last weekend.

    >>290030 Wangfujing is a terrible recommendation for bars. What are you thinking? Sanlitun is okay, though.

There are some cool nightspots at Nanluoguxiang hutong and also near the Bell and Drum Towers (try to find Jiangjinjiu 疆进酒) which have a mixed crowd and no packs of shiny-jacket clad, big-haired rich kids trying to look tough. Also, there's Wudaokou, which is the studenty part of town.

Protip: any 10 or 15RMB mixed drinks will be dodgy alcohol and give you a bastard of a hangover. Sticking to the beer is probably best.

i myself only drink beer, my friend how ever only drinks booze. so ill tip him of these cheap drinks and have great fun
    >> Anonymous 03/23/10(Tue)08:15 No.291529
    >>291066

10-15 is pretty average price for mixed drinks in bars, you just cant handle your alcohol.

In fact for simple shit, vodka orange, vodka redbull and rum and coke i would not pay more than 15.

Protip; there are no places where you will get ripped off if you learn some mandarin and grow some fucking balls.

    >>291523

Dont pay more than 15 for tsingtao in bars, and you can get em for 10 most places. 2 or 3 in shitties, 5 in resturaunts

    闭嘴,笨蛋
I know Mandarin, can handle my booze and my balls are absolutely fine. You're a cheap ass loser that doesn't realise that you will only get that kind of price in shithole bars and clubs and can't taste the difference between real and fake booze anyway.

If you go anywhere with a bit of class, style or an intelligent atmosphere, you won't get vodka redbulls or any mixed drinks for 10 or 15 RMB. Or anything close to it either, probably; Gingko's, Fubar, Nearby the Tree etc... good luck. Not that you'd feel comfortable in a place with grown ups.

Personally, I also love the debauch, back bar street of Sanlitun, but I don't go there because I think the other places are too expensive; I go there to meet young ladies whose parents don't live in Beijing and are taking advantage of the opportunity to enjoy their lives and try some new things. And sometimes, to get shitfaced.

Fuck off and go back to writing graffiti in toilets. That is your place.

Nearby the tree is so fucking classy right? Also how do you get shitfaced down the back street of sanlitun without drinking any 15rmb drinks? since they all charge 10 or 15 for mixes.

So far we have learned; you enjoy shitty pizza houses full of expats (well not even full, since everyone just goes to the fucking tree itself), you pay twice what you have to for everything, you take advantage of drunk girls.

Typical annoying as fuck yank expat.

dont know about swimming, but theres plenty of great live music venues, yugongyishan, mao live house, club 13, d-22. Lots of places around wudaokou because its the studenty area, but some like yugongyishan are more central.
These places arent exclusively rock venues though, they are pretty rare in china, expect lots of akon.

OK, now I'm going to have to fight you over semantics online, so this makes us both retards. But then, I know the "ignore what I don't like, find things to contradict and make the argument about that" that people use to convince themselves they're right. I stand by everything I said. You recommended Wangfujing bar street as a viable nightlife option! Something is fishy.

I believe I said "anywhere with a bit of class, style or intelligent atmosphere" and, yes, Nearby the Tree has a bit of an intelligent atmosphere. Relative to the bar street, at least. That means that you see a yuppie-ish crowd pacing themselves and not hammered students necking at the tables and throwing up.

Yes, at bar street, you can get shitfaced from beer, not mixed drinks. No need to drink screwdrivers. Remember my original post?

Nobody needs to "take advantage of drunk girls". In fact, if you know anything about how it works here, you'd know that (generally) one-night stands only ever happen with yuppie girls here for a few days on business. You gotta do a few dates first. That's good advice for any of you guys, by the way.

I'll admit the medal comment was a bit harsh - but I had assumed it was the guy arguing with me. If it wasn't, then I apologise.

And what do we know about my opponent? Well, he recommended you go to Wangfujing as a bar street - that says to me "trying to waste your time by dumping you in a rip-off touristy part of time with no real bars". How can he know Nearby The Tree is a dive bar that serves great pizza but also think WFJ is a good bar street recommendation? Suspicious. He told me to "learn some fucking Mandarin", this means that he definitely knows it himself, and made an assumption about me presumably based on the fact that I'm typing in English on 4chan and like drinking beer. Hmm. He disagreed with the common knowledge pointer I made about the dodgy booze in bar street (and Propaganda in Wudaokou, btw), which is weird, because everyone knows it, so it just looks like he's defending the face of bar street. He called me a Yank without a shred of evidence to support it beyond my intelligent and well-structured English (obvious joke here is that this is a strike against me being from the US), which means he is still trying to find out more about me. And, after the perfectly reasonable question "what are you thinking [recommending WFJ bars]?" I was told to grow some fucking balls, indicating anger and the escalation of hostilities. So I felt free to shoot back a bit!

My guess is that he's one of the young-ish Chinese university graduates who float around on 4chan practicing their English by arguing with foreigners and posting hateful shit. I'd also guess that this person sees a future income in being paid for his online comment writing, if you know what I'm talking about. And I know he does.

Either way, I'm the honest one with the good bar recommendations. And that's what we're talking about, amirite?

I never recomended wangfujing for bars, >>290030 was not me, and i am not chinese.

Dodgy spirits are not the norm, alcohol is not that expensive, granted the best vodka you are likely to get in a mixed drink is stoli.
If buy dodgy you mean produced locally under license then yeah, its all going to be slightly lower quality flavourwise but its not damaging to your health in any way and hangovers are no more frequent.

Didn't read everything, but for night life check out VICS or MIX, I think that's pretty good, only hiphop/US pop. MIX = younger ppl, less foreigners, VICS = Older ppl 22~28 and a lot of foreigners.

You could try Suzie wong, but it's full of old rich foreigners faggot who try to look cool. Even worse than sanlitun/houhai!
