I am a 4inch scale 1:18th collector: joes, microman, marvel universe. Occasional animu toy that is in scale (holy grail= 1:18th major with tachikoma)

I got back into toys when I asked /toy/ about a replacement for an art statue. I settled on microman figs, as they were about the same price as an art statue but smaller and had interchangeable hands. Most of my class ended up buying them too. Since then I have continued with the 4 inch scale for nostalgia reasons (and budget compared to 6 inch). They are compact enough to not make a mess when played with and also small enough to get picked up by coworkers and to fiddle with.

While I agree that I do both display and play, I almost always have 'play' in my mind when buying a figure. I never buy a toy with the intention of display only (even though it might turn out that way).

I think of toys much like a 1 player game. Its fun to dick around with other people, but when you want to get into your game you will play solo. I have a few figs around that my fiancee (inb4 parent) and I pose in goofy poses.

So a female playing with toys is less socially acceptable than a male. Being a nerd or geek is seen as a male thing. Whereas females interests tend to lie in being social, as in... buying shoes and dresses to look good for social settings. This in turn makes them seem more mature and professional, a go getter.

You can buy the quality plastic ones for about $20-30. Ain't that much money.

Anyway, even though it's less socially acceptable for a female to have/play with toys, most guys will look past it if your'e attractive and even if you're not (you're just one of the guys)
To other girls? you're fucked socially.
A guy can be openly cool with you even if he doesn't collect toys or whatever, because he might think the toys you buy are cool (because he likes the games/movies for Halo, Aliens, etc).
Females are far more judgmental, especially among themselves.

Obviously, this is a generalization, but these experiences do happen with much frequency. Most girls i've known (friends and GFs) tend to have glossed over my collections and seemed to want to ignore it (disdain? no interest at all? lotta reasons), whereas guys (ages ranging from 7-60) focus immediately on it with intense interest.

Don't bother. While the Alien toys are pretty cool, you'll likely think of them as shit and a waste of money once you start buying the more quality ones.

Hot Toys made snap kit Alien figures that are about 4" in height. They were blind box, so you don't know what you'd get exactly, but they're well worth whatever price they'll go for (about $20). Microman/Takara also made a couple of Alien figures as well, but their quality isn't that great.

If by play you mean smash them together and make pewpew noises....well, there's less smashing but the pewpew noises are still common enough.

Depends on what you collect, but I think most of the collectors of weeaboo junk tend to play with them primarily by setting them up and amusing/cool poses for pictures and such with them.

That's what I do, anyways. Sometimes it doesnt turn out that well, but its all for personal amusement so who gives a shit

I used to play with action figures until I was like 12 or so, until I started getting bullied for it.
That feel when I abandoned my favourite hobby because of social prejudice.

I have decided though, after seeing Prometheus, I might collect toys related to the film and the Aliens franchise in general. I have been looking.

Depends on your definition of "play." It's not really the smashing toys into each other sort of play, but a lot of folks 'round here are very fond of creating goofy scenes and stories and taking pictures of them, in addition to toy photography in general.

What about Monster High dolls?
