    /g/ here.

We've come across a conundrum regarding certain terms used to describe our demographic. It used to be we were called nerds, or geeks, that sort of thing. Such terms were derogatory, they were insults. But through a strange twist of fate, the hipsters who once mocked us with them have taken those same words and twisted them into a new fad.

The problem is that while we can recognize that nerd and geek are now just synonyms for "the modern hipster", we lack an appropriate term to describe, well, us. The people that these new "nerds" wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole.

Because to be a nerd as it once was is not accepted. We are still hated or held in contempt. Nerd has most definitely changed in meaning, and we are left without an appropriate descriptor.

So I ask you, /tg/ - what are we meant to be called now?

Nobody should call anything "GNU/Linux". That name is just stupid.

Call it "Fedora" or "Ubuntu" or whatever else when you're talking about the distribution. And when you're talking about the standard system, it's just "Linux". The GNU tools are neither the majority nor the most important part, there's no point in pointing them out.

You wouldn't call Windows "GNU/Windows" just because you installed mingw on it, now would you?

Heh, the second it becomes cool to be a geek or a nerd, we become something else. Of course.

People is a great term for us now, since, if they want our name so badly, they can have it. We'll just settle into our cozy new denotation...

No true geeks or nerds gladly christens themselves geeks or nerds. Hipsters are the ones obsessed with labels.

Besides, nerds or geeks were labels that would have been applied TO us BY other people before they were appropriated for other people's purposes.

We've never cared about what we've been called. We just gather every Saturday night to roll dice, drink beer, and have fun. We don't care about how cool we look. Coolness is secondary to fun. Always has been.

That's the thing I worry about, though. When we were known as nerds or whatnot, we had a recognized place in society. We might not have cared, and it might have been a shitty place, but fundamentally it was still accepted that that was who we are.

Now it's gone and people who were once just called geeks or nerds are getting diagnosed with autism (and I'm not saying autism isn't a real thing but I don't think of it as a disease) and SPD and whatnot out the ass, and the things that make us who we are are getting treated as abnormalities that ought to be "cured."

That worries me. Better to have a known and accepted place in society than to have society see you as a problem that needs fixing.

Well, what better way to destroy a group's identity than to completely co-opt it and turn it into something malleable and marketable?

You might be interested to know that this is in fact a documented phenomenon, and being pissed off about it is very natural. When someone takes something that's close to your heart, skins it, and repurposes it for hip consumption, you feel as if a part of you is being corrupted. It's no longer about the thing itself, but rather a fetishization of it that takes its most superficial elements and rebrands them for easy digestion.

There are those who attempt to copy, accurately copy, or even enjoy legitimately, our hobbies. The obsession of labels is a simply the people's way of making themselves unique. It's not enough to play zelda games, you have to tell people about how you played the ORIGINALS and are thus a TRUE NERD.
Honestly? I couldn't give a fuck what they call themselves.
What's annoying is that they slander what I love, they bend and twist it until it isn't what I love. And the creators of it reach the dilemma of choosing between what is creative and original, and what sells.

When it comes to us, or those of us who enjoy what we do because of what it is, we are just people. People who band together in the common goal of doing what we love, and never letting it go.

We are people who are much alike.
    We are bros.

    Also neckbeards.

Autism is more severe than just "liking nerdy things." It involves social and psychological disabilities that are generally just a stereotype.

If you can't tell your general "nerd" from the autistic character in Rain Man, then I don't even know what to say.

We refer to those people as 'sperglings.

I guess the difference between hipsters and non-hipsters is that non-hipsters are interested in a subject for its own sake while hipsters are interested in a subject for the sake of how much more socially marketable it makes them to (appear to) embrace that subject.

That's really the shortest and most accurate way I can put it. If anyone else wants to try, go ahead.

But the faggots in question call themselves by these names of ours. Seeing how their associates are mostly as dumb as they, they'll be able to convince them that they are 'smarticle nerds' with some random, useless fact about the nth digit of Pi or how many dollars of damage their fermi housefire did to them.

Thus, the proper use of the names in question are losing their true meaning. Thus, we require a new name.

    There's a medical term called 'pre-diabetic'
Although technically they are not diabetic, they're people who are halfway between healthy and type 2.

All type 2 diabetics were pre-diabetic, which developed into full-blown diabetes. A pre-diabetic can live fine without insulin, but they'd be healthier if they took a little bit. It's a growing concern in American due to shittier and shittier diets, with lots of sugar and crazy chemicals in our food.

Last number I read was some 30 million americans were considered pre-diabetic.

Also: Type 1, pancreas doesn't produce insulin. Treatment has advanced a ton in the past ten years. Due to the above reasons, and so many type 1s getting diagnosed early in life, they may very well live longer than average.

Type 2: You ate a ton of shitty food and fucked your pancreas over. You produce little to no insulin anymore. Try taking your insulin you stupid fuck.

Pre-diabetic: Eat healthier, you dumb fuck. You're going to be type 2 if you keep this up.

    >It involves social and psychological disabilities that are generally just a stereotype.
Yes, but there was a time when these disabilities and/or limitations were just seen as something a lot of nerds did; for example, talking incessantly about a subject that everyone else has long since lost interest in, or never had any interest in. Or being utterly oblivious to body language / unable to read between the lines. They weren't liked by society by any means, but there was a certain resigned acceptance - "that's just what a lot of nerds are like". Now people attempt to change this, try to come up with drugs or treatments to make high functioning autistics into something that they aren't.

There are some autistics (low functioning) who are literally retarded; I don't think they're worth talking about here because they simply fall under the category of actual retards. Some retards are otherwise neurotypical, should we say all neurotypical people are thus retards, or judge them by that group? No.
