>Russo sent Colin one last letter, for him to open at 18. Even after reading it, he had no interest in contact with her. A lot of adopted kids think if they so much as talk to their birth parents, it's a slap in the face to their adopted ones. They refuse out of a vague notion of respect.
>"Is that how you feel?" I asked Kaepernick on Tuesday at Super Bowl media day. "That it would be disrespectful to meet with your birth mother?"
>"No," Kaepernick said. "It's not really a respect thing. It's just -- that's my family. That's it."
>"But aren't you curious?"
>"No."
>That's odd

>The Kaepernicks have told Colin they'd have no problem with him speaking to Russo. They even met with her recently without Colin. But Colin hasn't budged on the issue. One of his friends told Yahoo! Sports that Colin would think it's "treasonous" to meet with Russo.
>But it's not. It's healthy. It's healing. It's natural.
>More than that, it's important.
>Your parents are your parents forever. Nothing can ever change that.
>hurr durr i know what's best for kaepernick because i have an adopted daughter

>>
>>31325756
the fact that he's telling kaepernick what's "natural" or "right" for him is fucking disgusting
>>
>>31325804
Yeah, and this is what ESPN pays Reilly a $4 million salary for.
>>
He doesn't want to meet her he doesn't have to. Simple as that.
>>
your parents are who raised you, not who gave birth to you
>>

This is makes me cringe, he's imposing his experiences and will on someone else. It isn't anything but douchbaggery at its finest.
>>
This truly is awful. Rick Reilly should respect his decision - there is nothing wrong with his decision not to meet with his birth mother.
>>
I hope Colon Kaepernick has his career ended by Ray Lewis after he breaks his leg and give him brain damage. I also hope his turtle dies.
>>
>Your parents are your parents forever. Nothing can ever change that.

Nothing can change that unless you give your child away when it's a baby and had nothing to do with raising it.
>>

I know of kids who harbor a slight amount of resentment towards their birth parents for giving them up, even if it helped them get into a better life. They say it almost feels like a form of rejection, and it's pretty tough to get over.

Maybe she shouldn't have given him up for adoption if she wanted to meet him 20 years down the road once he's rich and famous.

Why else would she want to meet him? He's not her son.

Like she would give a shit about him if he wasn't an NFL QB.

Parents who give up their kids for adoption are donors. Just like egg & sperm donors, they have no rights or are considered in any way parents. It's not logic, its a fact.

Tell me guys, where exactly does Reilly say that Kaepnernick should meet his birth mother? He may imply that for some people it's natural, but he never says "Kaep needs to meet his birth mother."

she gave him away to the best family possible when she was NINETEEN. She kept in contact with the family until she asked them to stop because she couldn't handle it. She was pretty far from abandoning him... in fact she put him in a much better situation than if she raised him herself.

Being someones biological mother doesn't mean anything at all if you have nothing to do with the kids life, it's like if I were to sell my jizz to a sperm bank and it got a woman pregnant.
>>
>>31326687
reilly and berman are absolute shit (i think ESPN's NFL coverage is one of the worst things on tv)

simmons can be a dumb homer but at least grantland is legitimately good. his "lol pop culture references tied into sports go boston teams" schtick gets old but he's not a bad writer by any means
>>
>>31326835
Grantland is great, but not because of him. Every other writer on Grantland is 100x better than him.

>She's supposed to know 20 years in advance that her kid is going to be a QB in the superbowl? U wot?
That's what can happen when you are a whore and give your son up for adoption. She doesn't deserve anything just because she pushed him through her floppy vagina. She could have been in contact with him the 20 years before he became recognized, but didn't. That's on her.
>>
>>31326859
yeah i agree. Rembert Browne in particular is one of my favorites. but he's still responsible for the site, and a lot of the stuff does kinda take his cues (open homerism, pop culture references).

bill simmons annoys the shit out of me sometimes but i think he's better than fucking berman and reilly
>>
>>31326886
Because it's his choice and he clearly doesn't want to meet her.

Why is this so hard to grasp?
>>
>>31326687
I hate berman and reilly but I gunienly like simmons and I think he does a pretty good job.
>>
>>31326914
Rembert, Zach Lowe, Chuck Klosterman and Andy Greenwald are all amazing writers.

Barnwell and Simmons are shit because they can't take ten seconds to forego BOSTON BOSTON BOSTON when writing an article.
>>
>>31326886
maybe he doesn't want the extra drama and uncertainty in his life? his birth mother is a stranger to him, and he has no real social ties to her. he already has a family, one to which it seems he is very, very close. why mess up a great situation?
>>
YOU'RE GONNA MEET YOUR MOM AND DEAL WITH THE AWKWARDNESS OF HER ASKING YOU FOR MONEY AND YOU'RE GONNA LIKE IT
>>
>>31326904

She sent him numerous letters, and one final letter to read once he hit 18. She tried to keep in some kind of contact with him, and he completely stiffed her. She obviously fucked up and got pregnant at too young an age, but look at the life he has now. He owes part of that to the decision his biological mother made for him.
>>

Biological parents aren't allowed to just contact the kids, they have to go through a process and the kid, as in the Colin's case, gets final say on how when and where contact is made.

These people are allowed to long for their kids, and yea there are reasons that go beyond "slut fucked a nigger lel" for their decision. Russo can want to know him, it's okay. But directly tweeting the guy is inappropriate. She needs to respect his decision.
>>
>>31328311
Uh... you have the right to contact just about anyone. Doesn't mean the kid has to appreciate it, but you can certainly try to contact him. Anyways my point was that you can give up a kid for adoption for non-selfish reasons, so people shouldn't be saying they hope all adopted boys break their birth mothers' hearts. It's not always that simple.

>>31328320
I strongly disagree.
>>
>>31328407
Of course that presents the question: Is faulty birth control a valid reason to give a child up for adoption?
>>
>>31328407
Condoms have a 99% success rate.

That's always the chance that you have a faulty one, or you deal with a crazy woman who decides to poke it with a needle beforehand.
>>
>>31328328
Ok, captain autismo, what I mean is do you think the child who is in reality alive thinks it would be a better decision for his mother to abort him

My gf has an IUD and I've came in her every time we've had sex (a LOT) and she's never gotten pregnant.

"I can afford a child" is such a fucking excuse for "I don't wanna stop drinking and partying and being a whore". If you have a kid you have to cut back, be responsible, maybe pick up a second job but honestly no one "can't afford" a child, some people just dont want to have to work to support one.

Do you know how much it costs to support a child? Yes some people can't actually afford it.

Scratch out school, scratch out socializing, scratch out living.

Man you need to pay for SO much shit it's not even funny. I guarantee you Kaepernick wouldn't have had that nice health insurance, paid lunch everyday, new clothes every school year, proper education outside of school.

Come on now, I wouldn't ever want a kid before 24. I need money, I need stability to make a kid truly hit that potential. I can't imagine a 19 year old girl trying to go hard, it'll just end up him being mentally fucked up without a father figure.

Still I don't think I'd fuck up at all having a kid early, but it just wouldn't be in any sense optimal.

Having a kid is expensive as hell. It's one of the reasons I don't want children. Not to mention the emotional and physical toll it takes on a person.

While I side with Kaepernick (and I'm very skeptical about his birth mother), adoption is an admirable thing. It gives people who don't have the means or maturity to raise children an opportunity to give their child a better life. It also gives couples that can't conceive a chance at raising a child.
>>
To be fair, most white people would discard any evidence from a relationship with a minority. It's all good fun, but that doesn't mean you want to be looked down upon for the rest of your life. If it wasn't for him being a millionaire she wouldn't be trying to contact him.

Not that I fault Kap for his decisions, it's none of my fucking business and I've never been in that situation.
>>
>>31329723

Wow. A whopping one letter to read when he turns 18. Nothing before that, right? As I recall, she wanted his "parents" to stop writing her.

>>31329538
A mix of consumerism and the fact that the Super Bowls are becoming exciting.

Out of the 47 Super Bowls played, how many were actually good games? Check that: how many were actually close? In the 80s and 90s, the NFC was, by far, the stronger conference. Between Super Bowl XIV (Steelers dynasty's last Super Bowl) and Super Bowl XXXV (Ravens winning the Super Bowl) only two AFC Teams won the Super Bowl: Oakland/L.A. Raiders and the Denver Broncos. The latter won two after getting their asses handed to them in three four previous Super Bowls.

I think we've been spoiled the past few years. Super Bowls, generally, are boring and (usually) one sided games. That's why Super Bowl commercials and halftime shows are so important.
>>
>>31329848
There have been decades of NFC domination and decades of AFC domination.

We're in a time where both have good teams, but don't deny that it was always one sided.
>>
>>31329789
Do you know for sure there was only one letter?

It sounds like she did have a continued correspondence with the adopted parents. She asked for them to stop writing because she couldn't take it emotionally. Do you have an emotional mother? I forgot to call my mom for one week (I was really busy) and she thought I was mad at her and she offended me and was super-emotional about it (inb4 2edgy comments about my mom).

Women get crazy about their kids, I can totally see how she'd ask them to stop writing because she couldn't handle it. But anyway, none of my business and I don't know shit about their family and I shouldn't even be posting this.

>>31329952
Exactly. It's no wonder why there are so many commercials and razzle dazzle around the Super Bowl. The game itself is usually boring as hell. Back in the early days, coaches would have very conservative game plans and scoring didn't happen that often. The only reason why Super Bowl VII is remember is because it capped off a perfect season. The final score was 14-7. Both Shula and George Allen, who already played super conservative football, became even more conservative out of fear of making a mistake. The Redskins offense was shut out in the game altogether.

We can bitch and moan about all the commercial breaks that are coming up or the halftime shows, but there's good reason behind it.
>>
People hating the woman for doing the right thing, giving the kid up for adoption is way better than being a teen/early 20s single mother

Nobody hates her for giving up Kaep for adoption. Everyone hates her for not giving a single fuck about him until he's an NFL star, after which she comes crawling back to him and starts centering her whole identity around him (her fucking Twitter description identifies her as YES I'M COLIN KAEPERNICK'S BIOLOGICAL MOTHER!!!). If she actually gave a shit, she'd have tried to do this before Kaepernick became a star. And fuck, if she actually cared, she'd try to reach out to him no matter what his profession would be at this point in his life - Superb Owl QB or Walgreens janitor.

But of course, it's only a series of half-assed attempts to get him to love her after he's rich. Disgusting gold diggery at its lowest. He's completely right for outright ignoring that bitch.

So what...Kaepernick feels betrayed and doesn't want to speak to his birth-mother.

I understand where Reilly is coming from, but not everyone thinks or operates in the same manner. I had a hard time speaking to my father after he cheated on my Mom and they got divorced. I eventually spoke to him, but it was damn tough.

I couldn't imagine what it would be like to speak to someone who didn't even WANT me in the first place.

Maybe someday they'll meet again, but until Colin decides to, it's a non-issue. Period.

I know how he feels. My mom got pregnant in high school and had to give me up because she had no means of supporting me. I understood that she did it to give me a better life, but deep down you still have that feeling of abandonment. It took me a long time to get over that. I ended up meeting my mother when I was 29 years old. She's slowly become a part of my life, along with my two half-brothers. I won't ever call her mom though. Wouldn't be right to the woman who spent all those years raising me.

That said, I hope that he one day meets her. Not now though. He's obviously not at a place in his life where he feels like he can do that. But maybe some day he will. If anything, there's a sense of closure when you do it. If he never wants to meet her, that's fine too. Everyone's situation is different.
