i wish the MLS would be better so there could be a true football league rivalry between england and the us and the football culture on this board would be better.

i think MLS teams should be allowed into the champions league because it is the premier club competition and is one of the reasons why big players only move to the us when their career is almost over.

but hopefully the success of the american team in this tournament will cause the popularity of soccer to grow and maybe in 10 years time it will be a major sport

MLS will expand to 18 clubs in 2011 with Vancouver and Portland joining the league. The new MLS club in Vancouver, Canada, will replace the second division Vancouver Whitecaps keeping some form of the "Whitecaps" name.

Portland's new MLS club will replace the second division Portland Timbers but keeping the "Portland Timbers" name. The Timbers will play at PGE Park, currently being renovated as a soccer-specific stadium for the 2011 season.

An expansion for 2012 will also take place in Montreal with their current team, the Impact. The official announcement of the expansion to Montreal for the 2012 season was made on May 7, 2010 during a press conference by the Montreal Impact and MLS Commissioner Don Garber. MLS hopes to add a 20th team by 2012 or shortly thereafter. A number of options are under consideration, including placing a second team in the New York area as a rival to the Red Bulls.

No, the MLS is doing the right thing with slow growth. THe NASL attempted to grab Euro stars who most Americans never heard of. It cost too much and they expanded to quickly. Following soccer then was a fad like watching curling on /sp/.

they're actively trying to avoid it. That's the reason for the strict structure, salary cap, slow expansion, etc., they want the thing to be self-sufficient and not hemorrhaging money without bringing in enough crowds/merch/whatevs

They expect all the teams to be out of the red in the next couple of years, iirc.

    wikipedia:

MLS Commissioner Don Garber said on May 11, 2006 that he expects the league's clubs to be profitable by 2010 overall. He reported that FC Dallas and the Los Angeles Galaxy are already profitable, with several other clubs nearing profitability. A year later, he revealed that the Chicago Fire, the Colorado Rapids, and Toronto FC were on track for profitability by 2008.[28] However in 2008 there were only three profitable MLS franchises; Los Angeles Galaxy, Toronto FC and FC Dallas [1]. According to the League, in 2009 there were only two profitable MLS franchises, Seattle Sounders FC and Toronto FC

Youth Soccer here in the US is probably among the top in the world, however the youths who excel in soccer here in the US usually stop playing soccer after high school because they either go on to play football or basketball in college with dreams of going to the MBA or NFL, or they're drafter into the MLB system. Whatever is left over gets picked up by US soccer. Look at Chad Ochocinco - guy was a good soccer talent, but knew he could make a shitload more money in the NFL.

Much better than teams dissolving and forming every fucking year and not knowing whos who and whats going on.

do the majority of MLS players still join the league out of college?
Because that's a huge drag on their development in comparison to europe, where they're signed on to a pro team (with top coaches and top facilities) at 18 and have usually played for pro team academies since they were 10, rather than playing for their high school and kiddie leagues where the standard of coaching can be questionable

You know, if they really want soccer to take off, they should take the top of the MLS and combine it with the cream of Primera División.
Adding Mexican talent and fanbase to US money and broadcasters might actually create a league worth watching.

As it stands, very few in the US are going to watch a third tier soccer league when they have world class Baseball/Football/Basketball/Hockey available.

Now that my beloved team has been eliminated (valient effort, comrades) which team shall I support for the rest of the World Cup?

    1. England - Somewhat obvious choice. Our jovial ancestors. I wouldn't mind seeing the brits avenge our defeat at the hands of negros.

    2. Mexico - Our friends to the south. Their proximity makes them an obvious choice. Also, Southern CA is basically owned by them. I can dig Mexican culture.

The MLS is worse than the fucking scottish league and thats saying something.

As long as you keep your fucking faggot names like wizards and dynamos and fucking fire you'll not be respected in the footballing world.

As long as you're the MLS instead of the MLF then you'll not be respected in the FOOTBALLING world.

As long as you're support and players are garnered primarily from the white middle classes instead of the working classes and the minorities you'll not be respected.

As long as you go about producing players like Freddy Adu who you hype up to be amazing because they can take on whole MLS aged 16 but then when he comes to Europe he turns out to be fucking shit, then you'll not be respected by the footballing world.

This said I sincerely hope the USA's excellent performance in this year's World Cup rejuvenates and mobilises millions of new fans over there for the sake of world football. I hope the MLS becomes massive and i hope the poor black lads in the ghettos aspire, and a handful become the next generation of footballing superstars.

St. Louis can barely support the Rams, much less a soccer team (and just six years ago they were the most feared offense in football), that should say something.

Anyone who ignores Atlanta as a market and wants to expand a sport completely nationwide is retarded. Of course Tampa Bay couldn't support a soccer team--it's Tampa Bay, what the hell did you expect? I refuse to believe that a city like Atlanta (a city that's hosted the Olympics, ffs) can't support an MLS team.

they do kinda, they have league rankings within most continental federations, its how they figure out how many qualification spots for the continental cup (for instance the Champions League and the UEFA cup in Europe) to give to each league proportionately (obvious size of the league is also a factor)

its done on stats like where the teams from each nation finished in the cup last year and how many goals they scored etc, how many players are on their international squads in each league, the overall value of the clubs/players/playerwages etc.

im not sure if they have an international ranking.

the top league right now i'd say was La Liga

they won the UEFA cup with athletico, finished 2nd in the Champs league with Barca, won it the year before, have the undisputed two best and also most valuable players in the world in messi and ronaldo.

second is the Premier League, then its Serie A followed by the 1 Bundesliga and then its an assortment of the middle tier european leagues like Portugal, Netherlands, Turkey, Greece, Sweden, France, Ukraine and i'd say at the same level as those would be the Argentinian, Brazilian, Russian leagues. Then comes the shit tier european leagues like Scotland, Belgium and a few other like the Israeli league maybe, i'd put the MLS in the same category as those.

This is really the issue with US soccer. With the exceptions of a few isolated areas, soccer is the domain of the upper middle class. The US isn't going to produce world class talent when it's inner cities and backwaters are focused entirely on basketball, football, or baseball depending on race and region.

Not really. Charlotte's going to have the market for one (if they don't already) in about ten years because their population growth is off the charts (also, they're nothing like the rest of the Southeast, I've read that they're one of the best functioning, well-funded, technologically-integrated cities in the United States).

I've been there. It's a nice city, might even be able to support one right now.

well that is true, but for example young players from South America (that latter will became great players in europe) almost all the time shine in this copetition.

The Rams are doing fine financially and draw as well as can be expected for the worst team in NFL. The talk of moving is only there because LA still doesn't have a new team and their stadium contract is coming up.

Atlanta would also be a good market, but Saint Louis is basically the only US city with an existing soccer culture. You don't try to jump start a sport by ignoring the only people that already like it.

Haha, not sure if you're serious or not, but that's not why...

If you're curious, it's because clubs merged together when leagues were forming. Like if a club from Queens, a club from the Bronx, and a club from Manhattan were to all merge, they'd be called something like NYC United.

DC United, on the other hand is just a pretentious name. They didn't "unite" with anyone.
