in a nutshell, americans see soccer as a foreign 'european' sport, dont wanna be told what to like, low scores makes us think its boring, doesnt have the bullshit all our other sports have making us think its not worth paying any mind.

My one complaint is that the refereeing is not an exact science like in American football.

If a goal is disallowed I want them analyzing every angle of video for 10 minutes before making their decision.

Fuck the flow, justice must be done.

If not even hockey can get on Network television for regular season games then soccer definitely won't.
Yes it's growing in popularity but every sport in America is (see rating for the NHL and NBA finals this year).

    lulz so hard at this:

"former Buffalo Bills quarterback Jack Kemp, one of the more influential conservatives of the 1980's, went before the US Congress to try and pass a resolution that would stop the US from hosting the World Cup in 1994. Kemp said, "I think it is important for all of those young out there, who someday hope to play real football, where you throw it and kick it and run with it and put it in your hands, a distinction should be made that football is democratic, capitalism, whereas soccer is a European socialist sport" Jim Rome, a famous sports host, said of soccer, "My son is not playing soccer. I will hand him ice skates and a shimmering sequined blouse before I hand him a soccer ball. Soccer is not a sport and does not need to be on my TV, and my son will not be playing it"

But it's rubbish. America didn't invent any of those sports. They were just adapted from European games.

American Football was Rugby that slowy got more retarded, Basseball still is Rounders, a game little girls play, you took Hockey and put it on ice, doesn't make it American, and basketball has been played around the world in various forms centuries before the US was founded.
Basically the article is saying Americans don't like football because of their poor education and misplaced nationalism.

And the article's dead wrong, we don't like soccer because we aren't interested in having shitty games shoved down our throats where there are more worthy pursuits to be attempted.

Running around for 90 minutes accomplishing something worthy of note once or twice or three times or maybe even four times is a waste of my time. I'm paying for a ticket, I WANT TO SEE SOMETHING HAPPEN. Players like Peyton Manning and Kobe don't get paid to show off their fundamentals, THEY GET PAID TO PUT POINTS ON THE BOARD. Sure, it's awesome to see people so fundamentally sound and it looks great analyzing it later, but the important part of COMPETITIVE SPORTS is WINNING.

THAT is why we hate soccer - NOTHING. EVER. HAPPENS.

actually no. In American football, you are unable to retain possession of the ball for more than 5% of the game if you are not successful in advancing on offense. If you are being successful, you can retain possession for maybe 12% of the game before you score and give the other team a chance.

In soccer you can score in the first 3 minutes then spend the rest of the game passing it around. Preventing the other team from even having an opportunity to do something exciting is seen as a legitimate tactic that is routinely exercised at advanced levels.

while I am depressed and suicidal, i do not hate myself enough to subject myself to that.

You're rewarding failure by giving the worst teams the best talent that year. Talent is the prime commodity in sport... this is a system that props up the weak while putting restraints on the strong.

You don't see how that's a socialist principle?

The best thing about this post is in its defence of football.

My kids fall over and scream and flail when the other kid taps them. They get up 30 seconds later as right as rain as well. That's my problem with football. They need to man up.

Yes, an elbow hurts. No, not that much. The grazes from falling over hurt more. The pain you inflicted on yourself is more than what the other guy did to you.

I think I like rugby the best, but that might be because I'm turning into a fag.

From what I skimmed through that just sounded like the US corporations cannot totally capitalise on it making lots of monies so they arent interested. Funny really because in recent years thats basically whats happened with football in europe. Its more about the monies then anything, maybe thats why it seems the US are starting to show more of an interest in it.

    >>5824677
It's a fair distribution system where the more successful teams with less holes have to wait for the less successful teams with more holes to get their picks in order to keep the league competitive and keep the revenue coming.

    That's a SMART BUSINESS PLAN.

    >>5824675
What the hell is the point of winning a game that means nothing? Playing for pride is nice IN THEORY but when it benefits your organization to tank a season for a better draft pick how is that not a good business decision?

Are Americans the only people who understand intelligent business planning? Or have I just found the most moronic Eurotrash ever to argue this point with?

The reason America doesn't like football as much is simple. They already like too many sports. Shit like low scores, rules, resistance to foreign culture and whatever shit they try to say is just excuses. Football will become more popular either with a cost on other sports' popularity or with population growth.
    >> Anonymous 06/24/10(Thu)07:02 No.5824797
The reasons we have for not liking soccer confuse me a little bit.

Our supposed 'national pastime' is baseball, a sleep-inducing sport that even a significant portion of Americans hold to be boring. Football is our national sport...the day of the Super Bowl is practically a holiday in this country (for reasons beyond just a football game), whereas the World Series can sometimes go completely unnoticed.

Honestly, I think what most people don't like about soccer is the quality of play (even though they don't know it). When I watched Argentina play last week, and saw Messi and the skill of his play, I said to myself 'why don't I see this shit more often?' The athleticism, the skill, the quality...that's something that can't be taken out of account. A lot of MLS teams are just boring to watch because the skill isn't there. I think if you took European teams and moved them to the U.S. that Americans would take an immediate wider interest in the game, and eventually good athletes wouldn't just bank on playing football in high school but might give soccer a try too.

We're not disputing that the system works.

We're saying it's a socialist system. Which it is.

The initial post was a response to the quote in the article where some QB talks about soccer being socialist.

It's fucking ironic because the major leagues use a socialist system to promote competition.

I'd recommend that you look at TV ratings for the World Series. It might be popular in some circles (*cough* traditionalist white American *cough*), but it doesn't have nearly the popular outside of the upper-Midwest and Northeast that you seem to think it does.

The sport's pretty decent, and game attendance has been growing, but it's been falling out of favor with TV audiences (which is where the real money is made). No one's saying baseball is completely irrelevant, but it's really just the third most popular sport in the U.S. now.

Club football and international football are seperate things. The World Cup is the ultimate competition for international football, and is pretty fair in its qualifying format (allowing the widest range of quality talent to come to the world stage without allowing too many shit-tier sides in).
