ITT: We philosophize about why association football (soccer) is not popular in America.

For one thing, I don't think that soccer translates well to television, our attention spans are too short for the pace of the game.

I played soccer when I was a kid, but I never watched international matches until after I went to Europe. You people go fucking apeshit over this sport, I originally used it as an excuse to drink heavily, but I actually got into it. America is stuck in an apathy well, maybe we should send Americans to Europe during big tournaments. That hype will rub off on us, and we can get some interest in the sport.

    Our parents don't watch it.

    Soccer isn't heavily marketed here.

We aren't raised to like it.

Doesn't change the fact that most kids move onto another sport once they are old enough too. If they grew up in a society where we had them playing soccer always, things would be different.

First-off, that's playing soccer. Playing soccer is a lot more fun than watching it.

Second, kids in soccer play literally no defense. The scores are always like 7-6 and shit like that.

It's because we have multiple other awesome and, in my opinion, more fun to watch, sports.

most other countries have no professional sports except football/soccer. at least, not at the level the US does.

But Football, Baseball, Hockey, Basketball all have big pro leagues. The NFL gets all the best American Football players (Duh), MLB gets all the best Baseball players, the NHL gets all the best Hockey players, the NBA gets all the best Basketball players.

The MLS started in the 90s, there still aren't that many teams compared to the other sports, and the talent pool is very shallow because most of the good players go play in Europe or South America.
    >> Anonymous 05/26/10(Wed)00:30 No.4916603
It's not popular because it's not marketed heavily to the mainstream. Over the centuries/decades the greater population just sticks to certain sports. It's the same here in Australia. Football (soccer) is probably 4th after Rugby League, AFL, Cricket and Rugby Union. Through the centuries certain sports become a national thing and it's hard to change that identity.

9 times out of 10, thinking it's boring just means you were brought up to think it's boring.

Little elementary school kids, which is about the age where Soccer is actually played by most Americans, don't really play Soccer. They just run around kicking the ball real hard. They don't really play defense either.

People who are naturally athletic would rather try their chances at basketball, football and baseball where there is more money to be made. I mean, unless you're incredibly good at football, you will most likely end up playing in the MLS or some low tier European league. The pay is not worth the risk for some.

Americans like football because it is apart of our culture. I dont know what it is but something about it just gets us going. I think the idea of a separated offense and defensive side of the ball (baseball has this too) is what does it. The idea that the Quarterback can lead his team on an offensive drive to out smart and out play the defense is a strong ideal. Or a defense giving it all play after play to make a goal line stand. The mental game and planning is as much of a part as the execution. The whole NFL is so apart of our culture that if this song doesn't get you pumped, your not American.
