Hey /sci/, in short, I dropped the ball in highschool.

What course of action should I take to have an at least moderately successful STEM based academic career from here on out?

Go to a good community college. Do amazing. Make sure all your credits transfer to a decent state uni. Continue to do great. Apple to better uni for grad

I did the same. When I wanted to go straight to uni I aced all my courses, but realized prior fuckups meant I couldn't go straight to uni. 3rd term I just said fuck it and my 90s went down to 50s and i decided to just play vidya all day.

What you have to do is
1. TAKE INITIATIVE to teach yourself and cover what you were suppose to learn in highschool. Not just go over it, you need to really fucking LEARN IT to prepare yourself for a year at junior college.
2. Have a HIGH GPA and participate in any and all extra curricular you can think of to aid your transfer to a good university. You have no idea how many people go to a JC and say "hurr im gonna transfer to so and so uni" YET DO FUCKING TERRIBLY AND DONT PUT THE EFFORT IN TO GET GOOD GRADES.

Newsflash. You're not going to get into a STEM field or into a science faculty at a good uni without top tier grades and EC. So basketball, clubs, social gatherings, and any type of leadership needs to be taken care of alongside top tier grades.

I guarentee if you can get those 2 steps down perfectly youll do fine in uni because you've built up the ability to take initiative and study/learn/take action when it counts. You'll realize how far you've come and it'll propel you to the finish line so you can work in a cubicle all day for 3/4ths of your life so you can buy technology that becomes outdated every few years.

Good luck

Also p.s. I sense you dont know what you want to go into cause you just mentioned "STEM based career" instead of something specific. What you need to do is research fields and FIND SOMETHING YOU ARE GENUINELY INTERESTED IN/FASCINATED BY and that will be your motivation/drive to get through it.

For me. It would be space. Every moment I am having trouble with math or physics or some shit not directly related to space I just feel like saying "fuck it", but that end goal and knowing that I need it to cultivate my passion and fascination gets me through it

And good community college would just be one with teachers that will be able to help you, and the courses you need to transfer into a second year program that are transferrable

protip: there is no /good/ community college

It doesn't matter. If you're smart enough to do well in STEM, you should get a ridiculously high SAT score. Many fine colleges these days will choose to look at just that and defer seeing your highschool GPA at all if you request it.
