Hey /sci/, what are the cons of the American education system?
    >> Anonymous 05/18/10(Tue)21:54 No.969263
    A lot of unqualified/biased teachers.
But that can be true anywhere.

    also way underfunded.

Teaching topics at too late an age, so it doesn't fully sink in. Calculus at 17/18? Good luck.

Also bullshit mandatory subjects like English - but only the English courses where you read Shakespeare and wank over literature, not the good grammar/writing courses.

California's schools have no budget whatsoever.
They have to cut more teachers, classes, and programs every year.
All because of No Child Left Behind.

    still federally underfunded.
There is no reason why our defense budget should be higher than our education budget in the 21st century. For the most part we have no one we need to defend against.

This and also the fact that we don't take education seriously. Each year schools are getting worse and worse and with a bunch of people failing or not doing shit at all, the administrators just lower the standards so they could make it easier for students to graduate and so they could make it look like their schools are doing good, plus the teachers are shitty and are hard to get rid of and also the fact that the students also don't take it seriously at all AND also the most of the teachers give mediocre, AND I really mean MEDIOCRE, assignments/tests/anything so any dumbfuck can pass the class, yet still fuckin' retards still fail and end up dropping out of high school...

The Act requires states to develop assessments in basic skills to be given to all students in certain grades, if those states are to receive federal funding for schools. The Act does not assert a national achievement standard; standards are set by each individual state.

Wait, so if a school is teaching badly, we fund it less..?

    Oh boy......
When I took art class, my teacher said "turn off your right brain and draw with your left" (referring to the "lesson" in the art textbook).

I saw an elective that seemed awesome, but the teacher was a douche and the class wasn't as awesome as it seemed. Basically, she said to kiss up to teachers to get a better grade and assigned other random crap.

In middle school, the language arts teacher had an idiotic way of calculating an overall grade. She averaged the averages of classwork, homework, and projects. Also she said that heavier things fall faster than lighter things.
    >> Anonymous 05/18/10(Tue)22:24 No.969454
alot of teachers are idiots and impossible to fire due to unions, it's basically a daycare with a shitload of busy work, no intellectual discussion or stimulation ever happens because it might offend somebody, most of the teachers i knew didn't really care that much, it's underfunded, the kids are idiots, the food is shit. no-one wants to be there and for good reason.

And the funny part: since america is a democracy, the education of the public is one of the most important things.

Everyone getting more retarded, and a national debt of 12T. America is gonna be fucked to hell in 20 years if it doesn't get its act together
    >> Anonymous 05/18/10(Tue)22:33 No.969577
American public schools exist only because of child labor laws. Children aren't allowed to work alongside their parents anymore, so they have to do something during the time that their parents are working. Since all the bad things that happen in the world are generally done by the youth with too much time, then the youth have to be somewhere during the day.

When a particular child shows some real interest and intellect, then they are "moved up the ladder" a bit.

and this one time I was doing homework in the afterschool program, someone needed help with basic algebra that involved a fraction. My language arts teacher who was supervising did it on the whiteboard wrong.

Atleast in my previous schools, the teachers weren't the best.
