I'm an atheist and my girlfriend is a devout Catholic. Very early on I asked if that's a problem, and she initially told me that she's very much a "to each his own" type of person. She's in love with me. There's no question about that. So we're lying in bed just 30 minutes ago and we're having some talk about the weird things about our bodies, and she says "Well that's just the way God made them." And I said, "Or that's just the way we evolved."

She ended up telling me that she thinks about how I don't believe all the time, and how it hurts her heart, and how she thinks some day she'll rub off on me and I'll start believing. That really touched me, but I can't lie to her so I said, "I don't want to break your heart babe..." and she understood what I meant - I'll never believe. I told her that sometimes I think about infinite regression, and how the only possibility akin to what she believes is maybe a deistic god - one that creates existence and exits the scene - but that I probably wouldn't because there was no reason to.

I feel like I hurt her feelings. I love her like crazy and I'm afraid this is an obstacle she won't be able to get over - even though I'd get married to her in the Church and let any kids we may have be raised Catholic if we ended up going the distance.

I've never felt so awful about my lack of beliefs. I tried to talk to my best friend about this and he started to choke up when I started explaining to him why I don't believe in God, like I took a kid's puppy away from him. I hate myself. :(

Please, has anyone else here dated a religious person, or is currently dating one? Can you offer any advice? :'(

I'm sorry this isn't /sci/-related, I just figured I would most likely find the highest number of irreligious people populating this board.

Sounds vaguely troll-like or maybe your girlfriend is a moron. The Catholic Church believes in a peaceful afterlife for the benevolent, and also agrees with science and evolutionary theory.

lol, pussy. Religion makes no sense and has no evidence whatsoever. Does she even attend church? Most "religious" people I know don't follow the basic tenets of their faith such as this, my guess is that she doesn't either.
Really though, it will problem cause argumets and tension between you, religion is a touchy subject and, while you don't believe and don't mid what other people believe, in her mind you are disobeing an all powerful God and will spend an eternity in hell for it which most likely hurts her a lot.

Yes, she's Catholic. I used to be Catholic. I swear to you I'm not trolling, even though that doesn't mean anything. This literally just happened not an hour ago.

She said she believes God guided evolution, or something like that.

But as far as a "peaceful afterlife for the benevolent", I'm pretty sure the recipe for salvation according to the Catholic Church is faith and good deeds. As far as I knew, according to the Catholic Church there were exceptions, such as if you had never heard of Jesus Christ your entire life and were a good person, or the unborn and unbaptized infants - even though they taught limbo for a while I think they're back to saying it they're saved now.

Of course she doesn't. I just got done stuffing her like a turkey right before this conversation, and it's not like we're married.

She actually doesn't go to Church every Sunday. Maybe two to three Sundays a month.

    >in her mind you are disobeing an all powerful God and will spend an eternity in hell for it which most likely hurts her a lot.

:( I don't know what to do to get her over this. I mean, I asked her if she thought I was a good person and she said yes. I just hate the thought of challenging her beliefs when it's already a touchy subject. I want to say "Well if you think I'm a good person, then how could an all-loving god allow me to suffer for eternity?"

Also, about raising potential children Catholic, don't think dear old Dad wouldn't teach them to think for themselves and question everything. I was raised Catholic and turned out alright, and so did my friends who still believe.

Technically, the only requirements are baptism and death in a state of righteousness. I mean, the church might go on about dogma, but in the end, they themselves treat the faith as a living thing, and undoubtedly any deity they profess to follow will likely also treat such faith as a fluid, living thing.

...as for God guiding evolution? What's the hangup? LOTS of scientists believe that. It isn't as if we could ever test for that, anyways.

Ignore the atheist rabble here. Your girlfriend is just worried for you because that's what women do.

Just go back to the church and shut up about it if you love her. I mean shit, even Dawkins the God-Hater celebrates Christian holidays and appreciates the culture.

Why don't you pretend to believe and treat the church and other religious ceremonies as a sort of hobby or social gathering that you do with your girlfriend?

Are you against lying to her to make her happy? If you really love her that much you would take the stress and anxiety upon yourself by pretending to believe something you don't.

The longer you lie, the better you'll get at it. If you aren't believable enough at the beginning you can just chalk it up to initial troubles with faith and when you start improving she'll just think you're getting "closer" to God.

    I hope you're right.

    >Just go back to the church and shut up about it if you love her.

I do, but I hate lying to her. It would drive me crazy if I "went back to the church" and never believed. I even suggested to her that if she wanted me to go to mass with her sometime that I would go. She told me she didn't want to drag me to something I would hate or something I didn't believe in.

I was thinking something pretty diabolical. Now, I don't buy into Theodicy, because it requires greater leaps of faith to believe in it and treats suffering as a math problem to be solved instead of an aspect of reality, but I was thinking that maybe I could buy some books on it and then tell her "Well, maybe I could try this out again - since it isn't illogical for God to exist."

But then I'd be a liar. A HUGE fucking liar. And I'd have to keep it up for a long time. I don't think I could do that.

go with the flow dude, find a rich church. then you don't have to sit in hard pews but can sit in a sound booth running some controls.

Old people always need young guys to do that. Or become an usher and sit in the halfway talking for most of the service.

Or just go for potluck events, free grub is great. Offer to coach a basketball team if you know the sport. The assistant coach can lead everyone in prayer, you just need to avoid cursing.

Baby, sometimes love just ain't enough. </Cher>

I've heard it said that there are two things that relationships can't survive a difference of opinion on - monogamy and children. If one person definitely wants one of those things and the other definitely doesn't, it's just a matter of time.

I'm starting to think the same thing is true of religion. I wish it weren't, but when you think about it, why wouldn't it be? It's a subject that's enmeshed in the very core of who we are and how we think and behave. Do you really think you can be more important to a person than their entire foundation for their world? I used to think I could, but I don't anymore. And I think that's a good thing, frankly. I wouldn't want to be saddled with someone where I'd have this huge disconnect between us in the very core of our beings. And I don't think I could stand being around someone who (even quietly) disrespected my beliefs all the time. That's not the kind of relationship I want.

Good luck, OP, but prepare for the worst.
