  • Kimmo Alm aka "Sysop" from AnT has been spamming us for YEARS now, and has recently stepped it up. This shit has got to fucking stop.
As promised, here are all of the e-mails he has sent me over the years (and my responses).

One of Kimmo's ex-moderators posted hundreds of PMs. They are absolutely hilarious/terrifying.

Arts student here, please don't shoot! I just want to know if this book series is readable for people who only know algebra and basic geometry/trigonometry. If not, any suggestion on introductory books to mathematics (probably including calculus) would be helpful.

Instead of getting a math book, get some nerdy but still cute engineering/science dude/chick to teach you. Get laid, learn maths.AND THE WORLD IS AT PEACE.

I believe the current format of books goes over the basics of the math it requires (including algebra, probability, vectors, and a brief overview of calculus).

Which, I might add, goes to show Feynman's brilliance, when he can explain such advanced topics without relying on such tools heavily. I doubt I could explain to anybody the physics those books do to somebody who didn't have a decent calculus background.

Read it. Learn it. Love it. This will be the best book for beginners in calculus who do not know the material very well. It teaches you the foundations and basics very intuitively and provides examples and practice problems. And it does so all while telling a story. Literally. Its a story about a man in some far away fake country who sits around and solves math problems with the king and other people and they have to defeat and evil goblin. It may sound kind of childish, but it works and its a great book, especially for those not math oriented.

I don't know who you are, but you are completely awesome.

Theres also other series in these books, by douglas downing that cover topics in algebra and trigonometry and such. I'm not sure what all there is but ive personally read the trig book and the calc book and found them very good.

    I had the Physics one.

If the Calc one is as good, you'll be onto a winner, OP.

Calculus is fundamental. Learn it, kid.

I don't think the physics one follows the same concept, even though it's in the same series. It's not by douglas downing and doesn't follow a story line. You can also access most of it on google books if you want though.

The story stuff sounds not unlike the Manga Guide series, which do in fact work.
    >> Anonymous 03/20/10(Sat)17:14 No.551551

Well this one works. I don't know what the manga guide series is but it doesn't sound like its similar to this. This one just provides a storyline so that it can give you more physical examples of what it all means rather than abstract stuff. It by no means relies on the story or requires you to even follow it. You can just look at the math if you want.

Ah, i just found my Physics one. It's Robert L. Lehrman. Thanks for the correction. Not, OP, but how does Downing make it fit in a storyline? Sounds interesting.

Feynamns lectures are fairly accessible, though they will be difficult if you don't know the math, I believe he does go over it a bit. But the qualitative descriptions are just amazing.
