    It's supposed to be a nearly-free energy generator. I think in Iron Man 2 he uses polonium to generate power. So it's a tiny fission or fusion reactor that has a really high output and lasts a long time. In Avengers, he builds one for his tower that would last a year.

    I agree. It seems to be a small scale fusion reactor or something, with a tremendous amount of power output. I think they got the idea from fusion because, if we ever can successfully make sustainable energy from it, it will be an amazing , clean energy source.
