    Hey /sci/, /lit/izen here.

I'm about to enrol in at the University of Melbourne as a Psychology/Linguistics major. What should I expect?
    >> Anonymous 01/02/12(Mon)10:56 No.4208756
    To serve lattes afterwards. gg

Oh. Because, you know, it's not like I already have a high-paying job in business management already, and am taking psych to further myself intellectually.

Any non-simians on this board who can help me out?
    >> Anonymous 01/02/12(Mon)11:04 No.4208770
Psychologists don't know anything. I could enroll as a psychologist and my patients wouldn't know the difference.

    hint: I've already done this.
tip: psychology is a useless degree

Linguistics would be far more useful I think, especially for someone in the business world with a talent for learning languages. If you REALLY wanna double major (which always sounds like a good idea but almost never is) maybe look into anthropology? From a purely intellectual point of view I find linguistic anthropology facinating.

OP you made a mistake mentioning psychology in here. A lot of people here seem to view psychology as a "shit tier" major. But really you just should ignore them.

I am a Psych major at a uni in Brisbane (although I am transfering to a BBiomedSci to do Neuroscience/Pharmacology). Expect a lot of memorization, especially in the beginning classes where they generally throw a whole lot of information in an attempt to broadly cover most aspects of psychology in only two courses (usually). Also learn to write lab reports. You will do plenty of them if Melbourne is anything like my uni.

First year classes are alright, I found them kind of boring, and there will be a lot of wannabe psychologists in those classes but if you have any sort of a brain you should do those classes easily.

Would you recommend neuroscience as something to major in? I'm tossing up my options between genetics and neuroscience as those two have always interested me, and have been asking people who actually have majored in those subjects to get a clue in what it would be like.

It depends on what interests you. Personally, I fucking love it. It gives me all the intellectual satisfaction and gratification I could ever want. Career-wise it is a little bit limited, but for me that's not problem since I know I want to do the academic thing for the rest of my life.

See I have no problem with doing the academic thing. Apprently I am quite suited to it. So that isn't a problem. And I do want something intellectually satisfying which is why I have been considering it and looking into it because the brain is something which has always facinated me.
    >> Anonymous 01/02/12(Mon)12:24 No.4208942
    >>4208932
In that case I would highly recommend cognitive neuroscience. Given the fact that you are considering studying psychology (assuming you're OP) it seems reasonable to say you have an interest in cognition, and how it relates to the brain. Hard-core cellular neuroscience won't teach you as much about how cellular functioning relates to behavioral phenomena etc., so that might be something worth considering.
    >> Anonymous 01/02/12(Mon)12:28 No.4208954
    >>4208942
    Not OP.

However I do find psychology interesting, and was thinking Cognitive neuroscience already. Though I will wait until I actually begin doing the neuroscience classes to actually decide. Something else could perk my interest. But thanks for the tip.
