in thermodynamics, what does delta q with a subscript v mean?
does it mean heat taken up at constant volume?

    >mfw i wish i paid moar attention in lectures

Heat differential divided by volume. Smells like chemistry in this thread amirite?

I like OPs picture it was pictures like that are
    are really cool

    when you see it

    yep, chemistry.
    >Heat differential divided by volume
    what is this?
so does delta q with subscript p mean heat differential divided by pressure?
    >> Anonymous 01/02/12(Mon)11:16 No.4208793
    >>4208772
    Dohoho Gen. Chem I even.

Tell you what. Type out the equations you want explained, or even better a specific problem and I'll help you out. What you have there is a little too vague.

    Bonus points for LaTeX.

Ok for this the deltas always signify that you're looking for the change in some quantity. P is pressure V is volume. U is the potential energy. This is really just plug and chug tier stuff, is there a particular concept you don't get?

    all of that's fine
i just don't know what the delta q (subscript p) means
    >> Anonymous 01/02/12(Mon)11:52 No.4208852
The heat of your system at some constant pressure p.

    thank you.
and delta q subscript v = heat at a certain constant volume?

in general for thermodynamics, does X subscript Z mean X at a certain constant value of Z?
    >> Anonymous 01/02/12(Mon)12:01 No.4208869
    >>4208858
Ummm yes. Really that's just a notational thing though and it can vary, but in this case that's what your prof means.

Also "in general" in thermodynamics you'll be using calculus instead of these algebraic approximations. I really don't know why they bother to teach people this stuff any more because if you're actually going into a science where thermo is involved you need a WAY more thorough treatment and if you aren't this shit is marginally useless and rarely teaches anything beyond hurr memorize plug valuez.

yeah it's first term so we're just doing foundation stuff to get everyone up to the same level apparently.
    thanks for the reply /sci/bro.

    Qv

(And I don't know what that means, haven't seen many in thermodynamics at all)

I could offer dS, Q, SEVN and cV in the context of Deltas and superscripts.

I think this is a chemistry question. They're afraid of partials there.
