really educated in the field, but my mother died of cancer a few years
back so i've done a bit of reading around the subject. The long and short of it is that if you destroy the tumour, you destroy the cancer. There are 3 basic options you can take Surgery -Just
jumping right in there and grabbing it, ripping it out. Invasive,
potentially fruitless (if you miss a cell it might come back). Usually
combined with other methods. Radiotherapy -Nuke it with gamma
rays until it dies. You sort of rotate the patient around the tumour
while you do it so only the tumour gets all the radiation, the body only
gets like 1/180th of it. Chemotherapy. -Poison the shit out of it pure and simple. Don't know that much about this one. All
of these work pretty well in the early stages, the big problem comes
when bits of the tumour break off into the bloodstream, float around the
body and start growing in like 50 different places. If one starts
growing in the brain it's pretty much game over. There are lots
of cool ways people are inventing to kill cancer, including a drug which
somehow reactivates the natural death process of cells and a gold
particle which only binds to the cancer so you can heat that up with
radio waves and only burn out cancer cells. The big cure though
is in actually finding the cancers really early on when they're easy to
treat. If a magic bullet cancer finding machine could be made for the
early stages, nobody would ever die from the usual cancers again.
There's a fuckload of money going into research atm and Medicine is
slowly learning how to cure it.
