has gone wrong. In the womb, some hormone arrives too late or too
early, or too strong or too weak, and the scaffold of the brain starts
to use the wrong blueprints. They build female structures instead of
male, or vice-versa. But the rest of the body, obviously, develops
mostly as normal. This does not mean a wholly female brain in a male
body, maybe not even closer to female than male, but it's certainly way
off the normal male brain in many important ways.
So they expect
female standard inputs from the body and from other people, but they
get male standard. And it only gets worse as the bodies diverge further
during puberty. So the underlying problem is exasperated by complexes
that build up based on being in the wrong body and being treated in ways
you do not instinctively expect, and having to constantly lie about
your experiences.
The solution is, either you give them some
treatment that resets the brain to match the body, or you give them some
treatment that changes the body to match the brain. We have nothing
like the former, even in the pipeline, but we have more experience with
the latter. And even if the former were available, for many people
massive brain alteration could be akin to death. In treating the body,
we can do decent sex changes, and only get better at it.
It's
not like being gay, which appears to be a fairly standard error in the
vertebrate mate selection systems. Gay people aren't sick, the condition
is not intrinsically harmful, so they don't have a pathology.
Transsexuals do have a pathology, there is just some debate over the
treatment. |
