I think there is more to it.
Trolling is not the mere goatse or rickrolling, its purpose is to create a flame war- what evolutive purpose could serve the desire to make brethren fight against each other?

well in one hand, if people are busy fighting each other, they wont have time to fight you.Its would be smart to have groups constantly fighting so none of them grow to big and take out yours.

Also,there is use in causing a fight even in your own group, fo a war of words would soon became a real war in the Pleistocene if properly fulled, and war, being a all male activity, would take down competition in the end- women will lose their husbands no matter which side wins, which ends in more demand for your "product"

In the end, we were born to troll. The fact that you can do it anonymously in the internet became a catalyzer for those instincts of old since now you can do it and no one would know who started the "war"

I think internet trolling is oftentimes not done correctly, or done for stupid reasons. My favorite way to troll is to sound smart enough that stupid people agree with you, while more intelligent people rage.

I am under the impression that there are two types of trolling:

1. Poster occasionally makes semi-obvious trolling comments for laughs
2. Poster repeatedly makes trolling comments to obtain a sense of accomplishment

Maybe trolling is mostly harmless fun. A bit infantile of course.

But then, there are some people, like those trolls who write to Flat Earth forums for years, arguing their theories. That seems pathological to me.
