I once dated a girl who swore that I was "stupid for waiting for hot water from the tap to boil the stove because using cold water is faster."

Just kidding. I never dated her. She was a roommate. I'm forever alone.

I hate to be the cum dumpster's advocate, but the kettle will get hot which will keep its contents hot longer than a cool microwave safe container.

Believe it or not, cold water boils faster than hot water because it requires more power to boil; the same with how hot water freezes faster than cold water (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mpemba_effect).

However warm/hot water requires less time to boil, like how cold water requires less time to freeze. So take this as you will.

Nah but seriously why the fuck wouldn;t you use a kettle, it shuts off when its done and its convinient, better than guessing with a microwave and then burning yourself picking it up.

I never thought about using the microwave. I suppose thats what they want though. The manufacturer needs everyone to just assume they should buy a kettle.

How do you even boil it in the microwave?
with a pot with a lid so it doesnt splash everwhere? do you have a special container? How do you know how long to put it in for? It would vary by how much water i suppose.

That sounds like more effort tbh. With the kettle you can judge better how much water you need since it has the measurement on the side. and you dont need to do it multiple times if you miss timed it.

My kettle heats ~1L of water in 2-3 minutes.
My microwave heats ~300mL of water in ~4.5 minutes.

My Kettle is stainless steel and is ~90-95C 20 minutes later.
My tea cup is glass and is 80C 10 minutes later.

    lol ur dum

He said the rate at which (faster) cold water boils is higher than the rate at which hot water boils.

He then said the rate at which (less time) hot water boils is higher than the rate at which cold water boils.

    Faster = less time

    when dealing with rates.

Uh, no. Faster doesn't equal less time, time is just a result and by-product of the rate. Faster would be the speed at which the matter of the liquid is moving at, and not the time it takes to do so. And if you're talking about how different temperatures end up using more power than one-another, then they're going to result into different impacts and speed of the reactions from such energies.

don't make your tea directly in a cup. the finer flavours are in the more volatile compounds that vapourise and leave the cup when you pour in boiling water. if you make your tea in the teapot (with a lid, obviously) they re-condense inside the pot and remain in the tea, which leaves you with a nicer cuppa.
