/sci/: shit like this is a serious problem:

    http://www.foxnews.com/search-results/m/29019752/college-skews-political-spectrum.htm

Fox News is the most watched cable news channel, and we all know how overwhelmingly Republican/conservative/right-wing/anti-intellectual/anti-science America is already.

For those of us actually pursuing careers in the sciences this is potentially crippling to our individual livelihoods, and that of our profession, as well as the progress of society as a whole.

How is it that science is full of so many people of superior intelligence, but they haven't figured out how to defend science as well as fuckheads like Fox News have figured out how to undermine it? What do you suggest can be done about shit like this? Simply ignore it? Fight it? ???

    Pic tangentially related.

Simple answer: scientists are busy with advancing their career (or more legitimately, with their professional lives) to put much time or effort into collective lobbying as part of international or national organizations. For the record, such organizations do exist, but can they be construed as representing all scientists? No, because the science community (like a lot of highly educated professionals) is also bitterly divided. And we tend to regard those scientists who take up a public liaison role as sellouts and/or people who couldn't cut it in research or academics. So this problem will continue.

    Yes, I'm a cynic.

There is another reason why scientists usually don't defend themselves, fear of a backlash.

The conservatives are more powerful because they have connections to business. So even if science lobbying groups have money to lobby, the conservative interests have more money so the conservatives will outlobby the scientist lobby.

The real backlash will come from the conservative owned media.
