32 KB FOX News - Education Makes You a Stupid Liberal Anonymous 02/16/10(Tue)16:37 No.305504
Thought /sci/ would either get a kick out of this... or else shake their heads weeping for the human race.

FOX News came out today backing a "study" that education skews people's political opinions left/progressive/etc. FOX is now taking the position that not only does getting an education, especially a college or (heaven forbid!) graduate school education make you a no-good dirty liberal commie... it also makes you stupid.

I believe it. It makes logical sense to me that more knowledge gives you a broader view of the world and less ridiculous fear of things like QUEERS AND EVIL-UTION.

I've also heard that along with increased education there's an increase in belief in wacky things (ghosts, cryptids, homeopathy). Never seen any proof of this but I'd also buy it since if you know about the world you know how strange it is and are probably open to things outside your normal comfort zone.

But this FOX shit is pure political spin, and it will work. It will work and America will get fucked up the ass by China. Sputnik 2.0 plz.

    I agree with >>305597 .

I double-majored in biochem and lit, now a med student. And yes, there was a significant bias in a number of the lit classes, mostly New Leftist bullshit. However, having the ability to reason and think critically, most of it did nothing to affect my political viewpoints. I would identify as neither conservative nor liberal.

But we can all agree that the religious right conservatives and their ilk are staunchly anti-intellectual and anti-academic. Fox News just preaches to the choir with their silly scare tactics.

The study is showing that influences from school tend to push students to the left. Teachers are normally liberal, and when they talk about something the students listen to them. That's what the study is based on.

While I do agree with their supposed attempts to create a more traditionally liberal collegiate experience, I think they're not actually committed to that goal.

I would like to see the actual study, but I'm willing to bet that they didn't have a control group at all, in a number of ways. Their definition of "liberal" is probably not one that would be universally agreed upon.

My favorite professor was one I didn't agree with. He was up front about what he thought and he was entertaining. He was a Marxist economist and I was cool with that, even though I don't agree with him. I've had the course at a different place and the only difference between what was taught were two things: the banking crisis was included and he'd rant about the government (democrats and republicans).

    Shit was pretty cool, though.

Wrong. The ones that should lose funding are the ones that can afford it. The generation that needs the money the most is the generation that fought to preserve freedom and democracy against the Nazis in WW2. You might known them as the Greatest Generation. They are all very old, but even today, we still owe them the freedoms we enjoy today. Federally funded education can afford to take a 10% hit to funding, for 10 more years, if it means that the last survivors of that generation can enjoy their golden years in peace. We can always increase funding in liberal education later, but there is only one Greatest Generation.

They say going to college does not raise your level of civic knowledge, and then support this by giving the percentages of graduates that didn't know the answers to basic questions. But those statistics are meaningless unless you compare them to the number of non-graduates that were able to answer the questions. Non-graduates would probably do much worse.

18% of college graduates can't name a freedom guaranteed by the first amendment... I mean, I know that's an easy question but 18 is actually kind of low and he keeps saying it like its a huge deal.

Here we go... bustin out wikipedia on this one:

Political science is a social science concerned with the theory and practice of politics and the description and analysis of political systems and political behavior. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poli_sci)

Social sciences may draw upon empirical methods and attempt to emulate the standards of conventional scientific practice. By contrast, other social scientists employ critical analysis or hermeneutic methods to study objects of enquiry they regard as inconsistent with the conventional approach. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_science)

Science (from the Latin scientia, meaning "knowledge") is, in its broadest sense, any systematic knowledge-base or prescriptive practice that is capable of resulting in a prediction or predictable type of outcome. In this sense, science may refer to a highly skilled technique or practice.[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Science)

    Pretty consistent terminology.
