Search Sigma Aldrich, Merck, Fischer Science, see if you can buy any 1,2-dibromo cholesterol ?

    If not,

Aldrich or one of them will deffo have a cholesterol IR spectra look it up.

And ass in an IR C-Br stretch (vibration) which is somewhere near 550 cm^-1.

ChemDraw and Chem3D have several tools for predicting NMR (Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) spectra and IR (Infrared) spectra. Just draw it in.

Demonoid.com has a torrent for ChemDraw if your Uni doesn't have it.

I don't see how that IR is really necessary to confirm your synthesis.

    Hey /sci/, I need help.

    For the real valued functions g(x) = x(cubed)-5, and h(x) = sq.rt.(1-x).
Find the composition g o h and specify its domain using interval notation.

I did this last year in Pre-Calculus and now I can't remember how to do it. I don't have my notes either. Can you guys help me?

    Pic related... my confused face.
    >> Anonymous 03/14/10(Sun)16:26 No.512536
The only thing I can tell you is that g o h means g of h. Other than, I can't remember it either.
    >> Hells !NuJBxbKoek 03/14/10(Sun)16:29 No.512550
it's been a long time since i've done precalc, but i'm sure the first part is correct.

g(h(x)) = composite function formula. therefore.

    g(x)=x^3 - 5
    h(x)=(1-x)^1/2

    therefore . . .

    (1-x)^3/2 - 5

    since it's x^3 and x is replaced by (1-x)^1/2, you get: (1-x)^1/2*1^3/1 = (1-x)^3/2

from here, i guess you can equal it to zero, which would make it:

    (1-x)^3/2 = 5

    ((1-x)^3/2)^2 = 5^2

    (1-x)^3 = 25

So if I want to find x, should I factor (1-x) out three times, or should I raise both sides to 1/3? It would get rid of the cubed root, but it would make the 25 pretty ugly.

    Is that even legal?

    How do I do this?
2 small conductive spheres, with mass m, have equal charges. They're suspended from the same point, by two insulating threads of negligible mass and length L. In equilibrium the distances between the two spheres is A (A<<L). Posteriorly one of the spheres is discharged. What will be the new distance B between them (B<<L), after they touch and again reach equilibrium.

    No.

don't think of infinity as "ever-increasing finite number". If there's an infinite number of mathematicians, the bartender needs to pour exactly two beers.

A mathematician, a physicist, and an engineer were asked to review this mathematical problem. In a high school gym, all the girls in the class were lined up against one wall, and all the boys against the opposite wall. Then, every ten seconds, they walked toward each other until they were half the previous distance apart. The mathematician, physicist, and engineer were asked, "When will the girls and boys meet?"
    The mathematician said, "Never."
The physicist said, "In an infinite amount of time."
The engineer said, " Well... in about two minutes, they'll be close enough for all practical purposes."

RTG (look it up if you dont know what it is) have been used in space, albeit they are generate electricity instead of pressure. The problem with pressure though is you need to refill the gun with water, and I don't think the recharging process could be fast enough, even if you bypassed having to refill the water.

They have gotten air rifles to shoot at 1600 fps. I think you can use air compression to launch bigger disks at slower velocities, but somehow have them spin up while launching.

Bullets arranged in magazine without cases/propellant blocks. Fed into firing chamber with hollow cavity behind it. Cavity is filled with some sort of gel, foam or gas propellant. When trigger is pulled, arc of electricity passes across the propellant, turning it into rapidly expanding plasma, forcing bullet out of barrel.

Sure, it's not as cool as electromagnetic acceleration (although could probably be combined with it), but it's a realistic system for near-future personal weapons.

I'd like to ask you, /sci/, about our system of education.

Why is that our education doesn't teach people one of the most important things in human life - the skill of being social?! I am outraged, /sci/entists. Isn't talking and having huge social networks vital to having any chance of getting kids?

You may say that kids have time to socialize in schools during breaks between classes, but what to do about those who fail to socialize and are failures at social life even after graduating high school? Would you agree with me?

    Asking for recommendations is futile.
People don't mention something that is actually of value or quality, but something that is their favourite. More often than not, their favourite is either something rather popular or something they happen to remember.

Yeah, I get that it's entertainment, not education. But my beef is that they still bill themselves as both entertainment and education. They could put in a bit of effort not to give the wrong impression on how it is supposed to be done.

For instance, instead of showing 100 runs of an experiment, they could say something like "we tried this 100 times, here's one example of what happened. Then we tried it 100 times with a control group, here's one example of that", and then just tell us the averages. That would teach people more about science than their current format.

So the scientific method of problem, hypothesis, research, experimentation, analysis, and conclusion is less important in science education than the idea of "do things a lot of times?" I think it's better to show people not totally familiar with science how to approach things objectively and construct experiments to isolate variables. Doing something a bunch of times isn't that complicated. Get people interested and teach them some basic skills. Rigorous testing is necessary for significant scientific theory advancement, but Mythbusters is likely trying to expand the number of people even interested in science.

Also, imagine how huge their budget would be if they had to perform those experiments a statistically significant number of times.
