The cappuccino is stronger due to the espresso being diluted by less milk. Also, the foam takes up a lot more of the volume so there is less to drink. I prefer lattes myself.

No, we think DEGREES in literature/art/music are useless. If you could truly teach someone how to produce art, it wouldn't be art, it would just be a reproduction. "Art" implies some measure of creative thinking and though it can be stimulated by a structured education, it can't be taught.

As far as history and the social sciences, I suppose some formality is important just to ensure good methodology and practices, but it still seems like a waste of years of schooling. That sort of thing could probably be taught in a year.

I didn't say that. I said that a structured learning environment can be of help, but the ability to produce something meaningful and artistic comes from personal experience and practice.

Can you be an effective artist with no education - Yes.
Can you be an effective scientist with no education - Maybe, but it's certainly more difficult.

Out of objective curiosity, I figured I'd find some data. (Billionaires according to Forbes March 11, 2009):
    1. Bill Gates - Chairman, Microsoft - Dropped out of Harvard
    2. Warren Buffett - CEO, Berkshire Hathaway - BS Econ (U of Nebraska), MS Econ (Columbia)
    3. Carlos Slim Helú - CEO, Telmex - Engineering (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México)
    4. Larry Ellison - CEO, Oracle - Dropped out of U of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and U of Chicago and
    5. Ingvar Kamprad - Founder, IKEA - Some sources say he never attended a college, other say he dropped out

Seems like a lot of the wealthiest men in the world don't have much of a formal education in any field. So, going off monetary wealth, it seems you're right.

There isn't one if you think money is the only important thing in the world. Now get out of here and let people who actually care about truth (in the forms of science and maths) have their discussions in peace.

Which would you prefer, a 90% chance of making $60k/yr or a 0.1% chance of making $1m/yr?

Numbers obviously made up, but there's your reason. You have the chance to become that small percentage making a fortune regardless of if you go to college or not. If you don't go to college, you don't have the pretty good chance of making decent money.

It's all about optimizing your potential.

Totally forgot that you were all about improving the world for purely humanitarian reasons. Wouldn't it be rational to be greedy? Perhaps you were, thinking you'd get into the right field at the right time, making money, thinking about yourself, being "greedy".

My problem is not so much that you think one is better than the other but instead the fact that you think a natural instinct that is the reason mankind has reached the point that their at bad.

Kind of a gray area. Anything with an fMRI and that kind of thing is more scientific. Jung, Freud, and co. are more liberal art-y.

Well, its instinctual to be greedy, except to offspring and such. Rationally though, there comes a point when you're not gaining anything from greed.

You have a nice shelter, no scarcity of food, convenient mode of transportation, etc, etc. Eventually all your needs will be met and you'll be perusing wealth as more of a hobby. I suppose you could use it to gather respect through social status and then use that to get the power to affect changes in various areas, but how many really really rich folks bother with that? You end up with shit like diamond encrusted platinum cell phones.

tl;dr: starts off rational, but becomes nothing but habit.

Thoreau was neckbeard. He was also thoroughly unimpressive. You want to hear about an impressive ascetic, you look up Cato the Younger. Hemingway explores the passions of the man and the silent fears within us all. Thoreau isn't even an eighth as great as Hemingway.

It's not my fault that you're not artistic or ingenious enough to make an efficient and beautiful waterfall.

Though, I'll give you that money works well as a sexual lure in the absence of other desirable qualities. So, yeah, I suppose a stupid, unfunny, guy with shit for personality needs quite a lot of cash.

though it never hurts to have cash even if you're smart, funny, and "have a great personality" whatever that means

fortunately scientists and engineers are already smart and have money and develop totally awesome personalities from having a fulfilling career and being respected by their fellow men

Greed is bad, self preservation is good. There is plenty of room for rational self preservation without encroaching or pushing upon others, greed is taking enough then taking more. The thing about science isn't so much that it pays well, but the fact (for me at least) that it is doing something that can help humanity as a whole, doing things to actually progress as a species as apposed to an individual. Sure, I likely wouldn't go into science if it payed less then working in fast food, but it wouldn't so that isn't an issue.
    >> Anonymous 02/09/10(Tue)19:27 No.238717
Sigh, my point with Walden is to live simply and do what makes you happy. Don't worry so much about wealth but worry about your relations with others. If you feel the desire to create through science things that will benefit humanity or you feel a love for things mathematical do it. Don't do things because you'll earn a larger paycheck or social fame but do things because you gain something personally profound and enliven others.

This thread is just pissing on anyone you feel is beneath you. If you honestly think art is made by the uneducated than you have no idea of the values of art. Unless you want all art to be garage bands and graffiti artists an education is required.

Go to a ballet, listen to a symphony orchestra, watch a foreign art film. Those tasks all require insane amounts of education. The best way I can express this is the man who played the piano so amazingly a woman approached him and said "I would give my life to play like that." and he answered her "I have." You all seem to misunderstand that anyone who picks up a guitar can be a world class artist without training. Pure stupidity.

We're all here together to make ourselves and the world a better place, let's not forget that.
