So, who here on /sci/ actually owns a whiteboard? It's awesome to be able to write large and think on your feet about problems.
I know, this shit rocks. I'm getting one soon
I'd like to get one but those things are expensive for what they are.
CHALKBOARDS FAGGOT, NOW GTFO
>>201402>chalk dust fucking everywhereGoddammit who invented this crap
my whiteboard is fucking old, and all the stuff i write on it is going to be deleted in less than 12 hours anyway.i hate my whiteboard.
SMART board was here, whiteboard is a faggot.
I have a corkboard (lol, is that what USfags call them?). It has its advantages and disadvantages vs a whiteboard. You can't stand and write, but you can pin up or take down whatever you want. It's sort of like a harddisk, whereas a whiteboard is like RAM.
>>201402Agreed.Whiteboards and smartboards are for losers.
I have one at work, but want one at home. Not enough space to put it unfortunately.
>>201431;_;Smartboards are expensive as fuck. Even if you just buy a cover for your tv it's expensive as fuck. You're better off just getting a projector and a tablet.I used to have two whiteboards in my room but I had to move in a hurry. My girlfriend has them now.I don't like how chalk feels on my fingers.
OP here.I have one at the moment, but I would love a second one. My house is too tiny at the moment though :(
>>201397whiteboards are cheap as fuck man, what the fuck are you talking about?
>>201460depends on the size brah. while i'd be happy with a 4+1/2x6 or 6x6, the 6x12s are a bit harder to justify.
we have whiteboard tables. it is supposed to encourage us to communicate with each other at work over a cup of tea. it is annoying when someone destroys your work with a sloppy coffee ring.
I don't own one, but I use them at school quite often. At the new Gates Center at CMU, there are tons of whiteboards, and even some walls are whiteboards from the ground up to the ceiling, so you get a TON of room to visualize algorithms. Being able to use different colored markers helps for writing code, but not a necessity. Chalk is pretty annoying and old school.
For real guys, chalkboards.GETTHEFUCKOUT.
>>201448I used to love mine. I had important dates and other trivial shit one one that I didn't use much, but I had another large one in my bedroom that I used constantly. I used it for everything, not just for teaching people math, but like every thing that could be simplified by a diagram. Also whenever I wasn't using it people who came by my house would draw pictures up on it as a pastime. Now that I don't have them I feel myself wishing I had one practically every day.
>>201431enjoy your pen being registered a couple of centimeters away from where you actully touch the white board and kids throwing rubbers and shit at it while you're writing on it resulting in everything you've just written beign wiped off.
Real men use chalk.Dry erase board markers are expensive and hard to see.
>>201483You know what to do.Go and get one! :3
>>201490Chalk is hard to see, and a pain in the ass to correct if you fuck up. Also it dries out your hands and gets everywhere. Not to mention, touching it feels like touching freakin' corduroy. Also chalkboards are heavy as fuck so you can't hang them up wherever you want (like just into drywall without having to line up with the two by fours).
Chalk makes my palm shed often. It's no good on my skin.
>>201512Try to get "dustless" chalk from a reputable source. It's dense, heavy. You'll get clear lines and it feels nice.I don't get what you mean by hard to erase when you fuck up though? You just rub it with your hands? The sign of a mathematician is chalk coated pants
>>201512Dude, you can turn any surface into a chalkboard with the right kind of paint.
Mathematician so chalkboard here, big size.
>>201567You can even get "magnetic" chalkboard paint now - god only knows what you'd use it for.
i use visual imagery
>>201577Making any chalkboard you make magnetic of course.
I have one, it makes my room more awesome.
Chalkboard:-Makes a sound that makes you feel accomplished when writing something (+)-Erases like a bitch (-)-DUST EVERYWHERE (-)-Should be washed daily (-)White Board:-Erases easily-Minimal odor -Not as satisfying -Friends and colleagues get high off markers.
>>201747I agree completelyAlso, my roommate has a white board. We are both physicists. I don't really see the point though, if you are working alone, no one uses a white board or chalk board, except you have some sort of condition that makes you write on walls, like the crazy geniuses in movies. Every sane person writes on a sheet of paper, since most calculations are too big to fit on one white board anyway, and then you have to erase the first part of your calculation. And at home you don't get to present your ideas to others that often. It came in handy a couple times, but that still doesn't justify the effort of getting it.
>>201767That's why I'm a corkboard fag. Writing down on paper is what I do most of the time anyway, it lets you cram a lot of details into a relatively small space and it's easy as fuck to take your scribblings with you if you need to show them to someone.Granted, it helps that my office is tiny. If I had a bigger office, I'd probably want to write bigger.
>>201747markers running out is a massive pain in the ass
i live in a house of 4 engineering majorswe each have our own is really nice for explaining stuff to people.
I'm a physicist undergrad, and I use my whiteboard to explain things to the other undergrads about things outside the scope of the course.Call me a crazy genius, but I love writing on whiteboards and chalkboards. Things are certainly alot clearer when they are displayed on them.
Have one, not that big (~40cm*50cm)
>>201767Hi leanord. Be sure to say hi to sheldon for me ;)
Teacher here. Just copying my post from >>202239- Keyboard- Pen- Crayons on blackboard- Whiteboard and markers- Pencil- ...- Smartboard (too damn expensive for what it really is)
i wish i did, used to have one down the hall of my dorm, switched dorms, now got nothing. its lame as shit.
>>201747>Chalkboard:>-Makes a sound that makes you feel accomplished when writing something (+)Yes>-Erases like a bitch (-)No>-DUST EVERYWHERE (-)I don't spend the night in the classrooms so that's OK with me.>-Should be washed daily (-)Hey pupil X, clean the board now fagget. Also: drawing straight lines on a blackboard is easier than whiteboard. And you can move most blackboards up. Whiteboards tend to be fixed to the wall most of the time, which sucks if you're a tall person.
My office has a chalk board in it, but its behind a desk right now. I am thinking of moving the desk so I can actually write shit on my chalk board.
>>201477>>201477>>201477>>201477DUDE!I'm going to head down there later today to do some work.Snow is ridiculous, amirite?
I have a hueg one that I got from some old office place. I got it years ago and still haven't bothered hanging it up anywhere though.
>>201577>Paint hands. >Climb up buildings like Spiderman
>>202310The college I used to go to had a scrolling whiteboard, so it's not special to chalkboards.
whiteboards<chalkboards
>>201452I've had two for a good while and it's fucking great.
I see some of you are complaining how chalk leaves dust on fingers and stuff like that. You could get one of those chalk "holders" (I don't really know what they're called). It's like a mechanical pencil, just that it holds chalk instead of lead (lol, I don't know how to describe it better).
I have a whiteboard. I don't use it much, it mostly has things like contracts and other vaguely important things stuck to it with magnets. Used occasionally for a long ass calculation when I'm not near an abacus.
how much does a basic whiteboard cost?
The feeling of chalk gives me the jeebies. Whiteboard please.
>>201391what r u trying to solve
>>203030have fun sweeping dust.whiteboard is superior if I have to clean the surroundings myself.
*SKREEEEEEEEEEEEK*
>>206891About $10?
I want a spherical whiteboard.
>>206925I want a non-orientable whiteboard.
Me and my roommate bought some white tile board and use it as a whiteboard. It was like 15 bucks at most, and it doesn't erase very well, but it is MUCH cheaper than a regular board. If you wondering, I'm reteaching calculus to my roommate.
>>206919FUCK YOU FUCK YOU FUCK YOU
>>206949A Kleinboard!
I use a graphics tablet for maths.
Oh Hai
