So, who here on /sci/ actually owns a whiteboard?

It's awesome to be able to write large and think on your feet about problems.

I have a corkboard (lol, is that what USfags call them?). It has its advantages and disadvantages vs a whiteboard. You can't stand and write, but you can pin up or take down whatever you want. It's sort of like a harddisk, whereas a whiteboard is like RAM.

Smartboards are expensive as fuck. Even if you just buy a cover for your tv it's expensive as fuck. You're better off just getting a projector and a tablet.

I used to have two whiteboards in my room but I had to move in a hurry. My girlfriend has them now.

I don't like how chalk feels on my fingers.

we have whiteboard tables. it is supposed to encourage us to communicate with each other at work over a cup of tea. it is annoying when someone destroys your work with a sloppy coffee ring.
    >> Anonymous 02/06/10(Sat)09:45 No.201477
I don't own one, but I use them at school quite often. At the new Gates Center at CMU, there are tons of whiteboards, and even some walls are whiteboards from the ground up to the ceiling, so you get a TON of room to visualize algorithms.

Being able to use different colored markers helps for writing code, but not a necessity. Chalk is pretty annoying and old school.

I used to love mine. I had important dates and other trivial shit one one that I didn't use much, but I had another large one in my bedroom that I used constantly. I used it for everything, not just for teaching people math, but like every thing that could be simplified by a diagram. Also whenever I wasn't using it people who came by my house would draw pictures up on it as a pastime. Now that I don't have them I feel myself wishing I had one practically every day.

Chalk is hard to see, and a pain in the ass to correct if you fuck up. Also it dries out your hands and gets everywhere. Not to mention, touching it feels like touching freakin' corduroy. Also chalkboards are heavy as fuck so you can't hang them up wherever you want (like just into drywall without having to line up with the two by fours).

Try to get "dustless" chalk from a reputable source. It's dense, heavy. You'll get clear lines and it feels nice.

I don't get what you mean by hard to erase when you fuck up though? You just rub it with your hands? The sign of a mathematician is chalk coated pants

    I agree completely

Also, my roommate has a white board. We are both physicists. I don't really see the point though, if you are working alone, no one uses a white board or chalk board, except you have some sort of condition that makes you write on walls, like the crazy geniuses in movies. Every sane person writes on a sheet of paper, since most calculations are too big to fit on one white board anyway, and then you have to erase the first part of your calculation. And at home you don't get to present your ideas to others that often. It came in handy a couple times, but that still doesn't justify the effort of getting it.
    >> Anonymous 02/06/10(Sat)10:34 No.201820
    >>201767
That's why I'm a corkboard fag. Writing down on paper is what I do most of the time anyway, it lets you cram a lot of details into a relatively small space and it's easy as fuck to take your scribblings with you if you need to show them to someone.

Granted, it helps that my office is tiny. If I had a bigger office, I'd probably want to write bigger.

Call me a crazy genius, but I love writing on whiteboards and chalkboards. Things are certainly alot clearer when they are displayed on them.

Hey pupil X, clean the board now fagget.

Also: drawing straight lines on a blackboard is easier than whiteboard. And you can move most blackboards up. Whiteboards tend to be fixed to the wall most of the time, which sucks if you're a tall person.

I see some of you are complaining how chalk leaves dust on fingers and stuff like that.

You could get one of those chalk "holders" (I don't really know what they're called). It's like a mechanical pencil, just that it holds chalk instead of lead (lol, I don't know how to describe it better).
