This is an actual page from a textbook printed by BJU entitled 'Science 4 Students'. BJU textbooks are used by an estimated one million students nationwide, mostly home-schooled students.

This is not a religion vs science thread, rather a discussion on textbooks. Given that publishers like BJU are already able to publish blatantly false information in education textbooks, and given the recent "history changing" rulings in Texas which some believe may have a significant impact on textbook publishing in the US... does serious legislative action need to be taken to ensure textbooks remain factual and up to date? What do you think should be done to insure that students are not being taught using out of date or inaccurate texts?

We of /sci/ should write a parody textbook. We could set up a wiki in which we all write inane tripe in the style of modern textbooks. You know, big pictures that don't really have anything to do with the subject, lists of "real-world applications" for every idea, pointless questions and exercises that are written to look like they're supposed to make students think but never require any actual thought. The Christian version will have Bible verses in every section and occasional random criticism of evolution, the big bang theory, and anything that doesn't agree with their dogma. If we get enough bullshit text written, those of us who are interested can have a vanity publisher print a few copies for cheap, and pitch them to Christian and secular schools with a hidden camera.

Cannot say what electricity itself is like? Bollocks. I've met him. The following is my story:

"Hello?" Nothing, just static on the line. "Hello."

A crackly voice answered "Yes, hello, I'm here."

    "Hi, is this electricity?"

"Well, yes, but it's E. Lectricity. I fail to understand why few people have the capacity to understand it. Just a little inductive reasoning would show that any normal fellow should be able to gather that I have a normal, full name. I face a lot of resistance trying to change that conception, so I've given up. But I digress. How may I help you?"

"Sorry," I hesitated, unsure if my needs had the potential to go forward, "it's just that my friend said that you could make things happen."

He chuckled softly, "Why yes, I can. I'm sure friends like Ben and Kirchoff have summarily shown that. I'll tell you what. Let's meet at a little place called 'The Source.' Go inside and take the elevator to ground. There's a nice little table in the back. See you in 15 minutes."

"Wow..ok, sure!" I was ohmestly surprised he had been that quick to hold up to my charge of help so quickly. I had heard about the place he referenced. It was the place that all the current intellectuals of our city frequented. I had to get going, but walking the entire circuit would be good exercise for me.

When I arrived, he was already sitting at the table, eyes a cool blue with a quick smile. His appearance shocked me. I expected a man more worn looking, but he looked like he had the potential to do anything I could want. "Good to finally meet you boy. Now what can I do for you?"

"Well, it's not just me. It's my friends too. Faradam, he'd like a portable stereo. Henry, well, he wants a... uh... he wants a personal massager for his lady." He re-coiled. First I thought of disgust, but the waitress had simply spilled some water on our table.

It's an economic problem more often than not. Kids' families can't afford to pay for the best and the schools can't afford it themselves, so they have to settle for some shittier ones.

"All fine," he said. "Anything else?"

"Well, there's one last friend, Vin. He wants a user replaceable battery for his iPhone."

The table began oscillating. He was visibly angry. It was if his discomfort was arching into me, as I soon became upset too. However, he calmed and composed himself. With a reserved smile he said, "TheVenin can get in line, because I'd fucking like one too."

Parents teaching kids this bullshit is a form of child abuse.
There should be strict regulation to prevent this.

Also textbooks should be completely factual and should reflect the ideas of the current scientific community.

Currently in a science education program. We talk about this a fair amount, and frankly, there's not a lot that can be done about homeschooling. Textbook decisions are made on a state level or district, so sadly, in bible belt states, you might end up with shit like this.

The only thing you can do is spread the knowledge yourself. Teachers are being banned from teaching real science in the name of fundamentalism and standardized test scores, and the result is a public that is far behind the rest of the civilized world.

If you have any younger cousins, anyone at all, teach them science. It's gotten to the point where you really can't depend on schools to effectively give students anything.

So, all you can think to do is tell him he's dumb because he wants you to give a better explanation of what you believe?

You cannot call someone stupid or call bullshit on what they believe and then say that they are too dumb to understand what you believe.

Either way, it sounds a little too biased.
They can teach their beliefs to their children, but they need to prepare them more for dealing with the real world.

A kid shows up and says what he read in those books, he'll be eaten alive.
They should teach both theories to prepare the children for going out into the world.

Simple concept really. Consider bears. Every species of bear we know of is dangerous and will kill humans at the slightest provocation. Every species of bear except a branched off subspecies that has adapted to eating nothing but bamboo shoots politely. Coincidence? I think not. What's not clear to me is the mechanism. In other words can munching meat in of itself trigger some complex hormonal chain reaction in mammals whereas lack of meat just scales back the aggressiveness? Or is it the more obvious correlation where having to hunt prey naturally favors an alpha male type of psycho bear? And more importantly what effect does meat have on humans?

    That's American bears.

In Europe we have bears that are more pussy than berry eating birds.

It's encouraging blasphemy, an essential ingredient of free thought. If the child comes across someone who argues about electricity being produced through turbines then the child gets to debate and will probably end up believing the "religious" argument is bullshit.

Christian here. I grew up in Kansas in a very Protestant town. This stuff is nonsense.

Take some peace in knowing that there are Christian communities who are not afraid of "secular thinking", let alone science. If I had shown this to any of my science teachers they would have shook their heads in sadness. (My physics teacher once confiscated a dowsing rod I was fooling with.) Myself and my friends turned out just fine.
