1.55 MBA MESSAGE FROM THE MODS Spammer 12/04/09(Fri)12:15 No.6948841
    Attention /s/

Are you curious to know what the official situation is regarding the spammers?

This is a conversation we had with a board mod yesterday. Please read it.

Proselytizing and /s/exy women dumps to follow.

    The rundown:

I've seen an anon or two trying to fight the spam with single angry sages. I have a better method.

I took a hundred copies of a jpg image that says FREE VIRUS and individually rotated them all so 4chan thinks they're unique images. I then pick a baby spam thread as my target (one with less than 20-30 posts) and set xChan (the best directory dumper ever) to post one copy in it every 60 or 120 seconds with sage in the email field.

Because of me, the spammers have altered their robot bumps to include "not a virus" and often pretend to be concerned anons posting that the spam isn't spam, but it doesn't matter.

I can kill a spam thread by myself with only a second's effort, and so can you.

The spammers are monitoring these threads, and they will often cut their losses and shut off the robot bumps if a thread is being sagebombed.

If more people do this, we can disrupt the spammers to the point where they don't bother posting here anymore.

    I just killed a thread.

And speaking of our friends the spammers, I just saw this little gem on page 2.

I don't know why the spammers have such a hardon for using Blogspot sites as their base. Maybe the site allows for their favorite brands of malicious code.

I have folders full of FREE VIRUS images you can use: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=LTJ6F8OT
You'll have to rotate them all individually (or resize, etc. to change their data) to make sure you don't get blocked for posting duplicate images if someone else has dumped them on the board.

If you don't trust me enough to download the folder (and I applaud you for being suspicious), make your own! I recommend black text on white background, and no bigger than 10kb each. Two or three words is preferable to long phrases; remember, the point of this is to catch people's eyes and give the spam threads negative publicity.

It only takes me a second to do this, but I can only bomb one spam thread at a time without fucking around with proxies. That's where I need your help.

Just as a curious poster, wouldn't emulating the approach large A/V products use by combining some level of heuristics with a spam 'signature' (phraselist, common photos) so that while no one component could auto-ban you, the servers would flag posts automagically and then delete any that meet all of the criteria?

Actually thinking about it, that's probably what the system does now and it's just not been 'tuned' to be most effective against this particular wave of spam, but I've already gone and typed all that out.

Also, some /s/ofter stuff still /s/ worthy.

But by posting free virus images all we are doing is bumping the spam threads even more. So we are actually helping them by keeping them so high on the front page.

You can write a bash script. I've dumped images and auto saged threads before with wget, written from scratch on the spot. I usually don't even think about it (5ish lines).

Maybe I'll write something for Linux/Max/Unix. I've never used xchan so I'm not sure what all it does but I figure a text file with comments and a folder with images, randomly selected and posted w/ sage = win?

A person of better programming skills than myself could easily write a perlscript to parse the html to find the spam threads using a wordlist, then use curl to bomb them. That's my plan

Could you write it so it posts them in order by name?

It would make it more orderly; and if you wanted to stop it and move to another spamthread you would know which images to temporarily delete.

The spammers are being tenacious today. More people running xChan or posting good threads would be highly appreciated.

Another thought that I had was that we could co-opt spam threads by simply putting a few warnings at the top, then changing subjects "this thread is now about" style.

    >I figure a text file with comments

Remember that the comments have to at least have some uniqueness to avoid getting blocked for flooding. Even something as simple as the first post having a 1 at the end, the second having a 2 at the end, etc. You could probably write something into it that automatically posts N+1 at the tail of the comment, right?

That won't work because of how the board displays comments. Unless someone clicks on a thread to open it, all they can see are the OP post and the last five responses.

A single warning will get buried under spambot comments in under two minutes. That's why a constant series of warning images needs to be posted - to keep pace with the spambot bumps.

My how-to guide explains how this all works:
