Was it actually established who started the fight, though? I thought they had pretty solid evidence that Zimmerman was losing the fight (i.e. the reports of Martin being on top, Zimmerman's injuries) but that doesn't mean he was assaulted by Trayvon as opposed to initiating the fight himself.

Personally I thought it was all about whether Zimmerman held responsibility for creating a situation in which someone got killed, even if that killing was ultimately sef-defense. It sounded like it was unclear and unprovable as to whether or not Zimmerman continued pursuing Trayvon after the caller told him not to, although it was pretty obvious he had a chip on his shoulder.

If Zimmerman was responsible for being dumbass and creating that dangerous situation, then it would depend on what conviction was appropriate. Maybe some form of manslaughter, but I don't know because I'm not a law expert. Not murder though.

Even if Zimmerman followed him (debatable), there's nothing wrong with that. Martin would have absolutely no problem outrunning the guy, so effectively both of them could potentially have got out of it if Zimmerman approached. In any case it doesn't matter who 'started' it, if he was having the shit beaten out of him Zimmerman had a right to shoot. It's also telling that aside from the gunshot Martin had hardly any injuries compared to Zimmerman.

As a non-American who experienced a few stories of this guys murder/self defence issues, I'd like to bring up this whole "stand your ground" law.

My understanding is that in the USA, in particular states, you are not only legally immune from prosecution, but actively encouraged to murder or apprehend criminals if the situation arises. Can somebody shed some light on how this actually works?

And does the average American believe in this law, or is it a hangover from the Wild West?

Well, he made the comment about "assholes always getting away" on the phone, no? That implies a certain bias and lack of judgment on his part. Seems like it's be reasonable that might might have continued pursuing and thrown the first punch on seeing Trayvon, getting into an argument, trying to stop him, or whatever.

But yeah, I didn't know if that changed anything legally. It should, IMO, but from what it sounded like, it wasn't provable one way or the other, and what with the whole "innocent until proven guilty" thing, you can't really do much to Zimmerman if it seems likely he shot in self-defense.

From my understanding, the Stand-Your-Ground Law states that if a person feels threatened, they are legally allow to assault the 'attacker' in self defense. This includes lethal force.

I think most people think it's pretty ridiculous, and the majority of states have the Duty To Retreat, which states that you should pretty much run away from any situation that is threatning, like if your house is being broken into. Now self-defense is allowed, but Stand-Your-Ground is a much looser definition- and allows for cases like Zimmerman's

The Zimmerman case is not a clear cut example since there's all this uncertainty about what actually happened, but I seem to remember reading about a more obviously problematic case where some dude was cheating on another man's wife, heard the husband was coming to his house, stood in his garage with the garage door open, and essentially waited for the husband to walk into his garage with a menacing attitude before shooting him dead and getting away with it.
