I finally passed my driving test last week and just went for my first drive on my own. I was only driving for about half an hour, and mainly on major roads around where I live, but it felt pretty good. I was bloody nervous though, and did notice that other people give you a lot less room than they do when they know you're a learner.

Still, I didn't hit anything, only ended up in the wrong lane on a roundabout once, and I don't think I pissed too many people off by taking things slowly.

How about some stories of when you were new to driving robots? Let's try and have a thread that isn't miserable.

Where i live you have to drive with a teacher for 5 hrs when youre 16 before you get your licence.
Since driving is not difficult the guy fell asleep. i drove around, got donuts.
I have gotten into one accident though. it was dark and rainy and i was on the phone. rolled into the guy ahead of me at a red light. luckily i was in n CO where there is no cell law.

Why? If you have a decent instructor in a dual controlled car it's not that bad.

I got my license when I was 18, as I was too scared to learn until I absolutely had to. So I get it, find out I love driving, and all's well. One fine morning I'm going 90 in a 55 when, out of nowhere, I see a cop coming up behind me. I've had my license about a week at this point so I'm panicking hardcore. I decide not to slow down so it looks like I didn't realize I was speeding until the guy's riding my ass with the siren's blaring.

So I pull over. Guy comes up to the window and says "You realize you were going more than 30 miles over the limit? Most people slow down when they see me coming, so I'm guessing you didn't notice..."

I'm thinking I'm about to get off easy when he asks for my documentation. I have my license, but... I have no fucking clue where my registration is and I have no insurance. More panic. He tells me that driving without registration and proof of insurance is enough to confiscate my license and rack up a fuckton of fines.

"Jeez, I'm so sorry sir, I had no idea. I just got my license last week, no one told me..." I start desperately rambling. Guy looks at the date on my license and just says "Well alright then. You have a nice day, just don't let it happen again."

i was driving my first car, which had a manual transmission, and was new to stick shift......was moving through one of the busiest intersections in the city and i stalled right in the very center of it.

was embarassed as fuck and had a zillion cars honking at me. funny, too, because it took me like 3 tries to get it moving again

I fell asleep on the wheel the first time I drove on my own.

I was so used to my mom's yelling while learning to drive that once it was gone I realized how nice go on a quiet drive and got a liiiiiiitle too comfortable.

Driving down two lane road. Think both lanes are going in the same direction. Chang lanes. Drive for 30 sec in that lane. See fucking truck heading straight for me. Swerve back into other lane.

    >driving towards oncoming traffic

Also I took my driving test and failed 5 times from age 16-21.

    >driving towards oncoming traffic
Happened to me last week man, trying to drive past this truck, I see the car in front of me (also bypassing) drive into the right lane and realize there's a car coming right towards me, I hit the brakes and manage to swerve right behind the truck just before the other car passes me.
I drove behind that truck for the remainder of the trip.
However, I passed my driving test the first time I took it.

    I'm a spoiled child.

Got my license late (19) but had over 80 hours of lessons with an instructor prior.

    Shit was/is easy.

A few weeks after getting my drivers license there was a snow storm. While giving a friend a ride home from school I hit a patch of black ice. Car spun around 360 degrees, hit the curb, flipped over, and crashed into a bunch of trees. Police are impressed that someone managed to flip a car going only 30mph.

my first time driving a car was with my cousin at the age of about 13. we were at my grandmother's house while she was at work, and we had taken the key to her mustang off of her keychain the previous night (she drove a van at the time). The road she lives on is a highway with a speed limit of 55 and the mustang's transmission was fucked up and would shut the engine off at speeds over 45 mph so we crossed the street into a neighborhood and took turns driving, peeled out a few times in an alley, and tried getting some fast food from taco villa, but it was too early so we just went back to the house. soon afterward we decided to drive back to taco villa and get some food and as we were waiting for a break in traffic we saw one of my grandma's employees drive by looking directly at us which made both of us panic. i'm quite sure that she told on us but my grandma has never said anything about it to either of us.

tl;dr i took my grandma's mustang for a ride at the age of 13, got caught, didn't get punished.

Me too, but where I live you can't get your drivers licence until you're 18 anyways. And everything from driving lessons to the actual exam is shit expensive. It's not easy to pass either, and some of my friends has had to take the test 2-3 times. I passed the first time. I feel superior to those friends now, shit is cash.
    >> Anonymous 07/03/10(Sat)08:47:48 No.9856827
Took me 9 months of lessons, started as late as at age 21, spent a fortune and didn't pass until the 5th time. I fucking hate driving for the same reason I hate /v/: everyone is on RAGE mode all the time. Also I have the bare minimum eyesight to get a license so I'm fucking scared of not seeing shit coming, and at night it gets worse.

Where I live you have to:
Pass an online test for your learners license which you can only use when there is a fully license driver with you.
    Complete 120 hours of driving.

Complete a driving test with an instructor
Drive for another ludicrous length of time
    Complete another online test

    Huzzuh

I passed my driving tests but was scared shit of driving. I was provided a car by my father though. I usually had my older friend drive it because it was too much for me. The area between those lines seemed so small, just barely big enough for a car. Well, one day he pulls the car up hastily to a spot where he sees a guy hug his girlfriend. He gets out without hesitation, walks up and socks the dude right in the face. I'm wtfshitting because I don't want to be involved if cops come. I tell him to get the fuck in the car and get the fuck out, but he wanted to push the fight more. So I hopped in the driver seat. Gave him another chance to get in before I left his ass. He got in. As I pulled away the dude recovers and throws a rock into my back window.

That is when I learned to really drive. Now it's just second nature. Funny how you can be so worried fearful of something until it's something you must do... then you "just do it" to quote Adidas.

I bought my first car on Wednesday, a mustang GT. It's standard so at first I had a hard time driving it since I've only driven friends' standards a few times. After a few embarassing stalls, the worst of which was in a drive thru, I got the hang of it, and it is fun as fuck to drive. I love my car and it loves me.

Is my mother's general reaction. My entire family loves cars. My first stepdad used to work on control for the WRC, my mother's boyfriend after that used to actually race in the WRC and worked as a mechanic. My younger brother loves cars, my older sister loves cars and goes oout doing car meets/boyracing shit.

With my siblings always into stupid/crazy shit and wanting a car so they can "go fast and look cool", my mother looked forward to the day when her 'responsible' son would get a car. I still don't have my license.

As she puts it: "The one kid who I trust with a car and he doesn't fucking want one."

When I was learning it was pretty scary.

My 2nd lesson was on a road where I grew up. However, I had moved away 10 years earlier and while it was quiet then - it was fucking busy now. Buses and loads of parked cars.

My test was booked fairly early in the lessons cos I picked it up really fast. However, the nearest test date was like 6+ months away. By the time I had taken the test I was a very confident driver.

Only thing which was slightly freaky was the first highway experience. However I took this extra driving course which reduces your insurance and gives you the highway driving experience.

120 hours of driving sounds pretty fucking insane and useless
I got the whole shit done in 2 weeks which consisted of 8 hours of non-traffic and 20 hours of real traffic driving with an instructor with 2 exams after each part.
Tell us where you live, so we can have a good laugh

Drive with my instructor during lunch rush hour, very busy main street, a lady doesn't signal and turns into my lane, I almost hit her but my instructor slammed on the brakes. My life flashes.
