Hah - I regretted not joining a frat my freshman year. By the time my sophmore year rolled around, I realized that fraternities were full of complete faggots. And, in my junior year I learned that the co-op system was the best for making friends, finding people to fuck and making connections.

i go to a university without frats, and in my province (nova scotia) there's only two or three frats at the main downtown university (dalhousie), so all i really know about frats comes from old school and animal house.

that being said, i think frats/sororities serve a pretty decent purpose sometimes. it makes it easy for guys going to out-of-state colleges to make a solid group of friends and party together. though, the dalhousie frats just seem like a bunch of nerds from various local schools who don't have any friends going to school with them, so they all join a frat so they automatically have friends. which kind of frat is yours like? a bunch of losers or the equivalent of a small dorm?

Another way for non-greeks to party is go to house parties which usually charge 5 bucks to get in. A men's only "club" that you join by invite only. You have a 8 week or more "pledge process" where you learn about the fraternity and what they do. The pledge process may contain hazing which could be anywhere from memorizing fraternity chants to eating dog shit. This varies from fraternity to fraternity.

What binds the fraternity together is "ritual" meeting, secrets passwords and secret handshakes. Passwords/handshakes are never written down, they are passed mouth to mouth while the ritual is written down. I'm sure you can find the rituals of some fraternities online, and honestly they're not THAT special.

People usually join fraternities for networking and socializing. Fraternities tend to have houses on campus which tends to be very nice and carry loads of history. My fraternity holds many items and picture composites of past brothers in the 1940s/50s etc. These past brothers are considered alumni and frequently donate to the fraternity and help brothers network once they graduate.

For the most part, they are usually not THAT nuts. they are usually normal parties with an abnormal abundance of girls and beer. Fraternities tend to have alot of "theme" parties like heaven and hell.
