Do you think we could get far with a class action lawsuit against TVLA (TV licensing agency) or the BBC?

You know how it is - misleading advertisements, intimidating letters, threats of arrest etc. I've got a stack of letters here from over the years telling me I'm supposed to be appearing in court and shit, and not once did I even reply. Turned out it was all bullshit.

But I already knew that, because I'm familiar with the law, a lot of people, including friends of mine, actually bought a license without needing one.

These are just the kind of letters you get sent. I only have the leaflets/ads on papers, I got them sent to me when I was university with no TV. They were basically saying if you have a laptop you need a license, when that's not true, you only need it when you're watching LIVE tv on it.

not to be harassed. you have to fill out a license form in the store when you try to buy a tv, its something like a hundred quid a year.

really though it only pays for the bbc channels, which were the first ones, because they dont have adverts, the rest supports themselves through adverts.

They can be really fucking vicious

Rogers do the same thing in Canada.

If they think you are getting free cable they will turn up at your door, and try to talk you into admitting it so they can take you court over it.

They send threatening letters telling you the cable is about to be cut off unless you start paying for it.

    Its all bullshit.

And if you tell them to go fuck themselves you can have your free cable forever.

No, there are free terrestrial and satellite broadcasts available to all. You only pay if you want premium channels. Personally, I don't see the need.

Also, the licence fee contributes to Channel 4 and Five. Only ITV is wholly independent and commercially funded.

ITT: Americans scratch their heads and do not understand superior state-run television.

Though, why you guys jerk everyone around like that in the UK is beyond me.

Down here the funding for the ABC and SBS just comes out of our tax dollars. If everyone, give or take the few, is supposed to be paying for this license - why not just make it a tax? You're saving all that money that you won't spend hassling people.

I, for one, would rather pay a tv license via my electricity bill automatically irregardless of owning a television because everyone rather watches tv via the internet. If PBS implements the same thing I suggested, the American commerical broadcasters would have to actually compete and I'll be able to watch real drama instead of the old stale brit mysteries PBS shows every week.

But that will never happen as American commercial TV hates real competition.

Formula One on ITV a couple of years back: Adverts every 15 minutes, missed crashes, overtakes, etc.

BBC: No ads, no break in coverage.

Also, I'd just like to point out to the person that posted that shitty link that you're not paying for the TV. You're paying for the receiver that's in the TV. You can watch as many DVDs etc as you like without paying for a license.

Americans - by paying 127 pounds a year we fund:

    8 TV channels
    10 Radio stations

All with no adverts, and a varied, high-quality output. There is stuff for the mainstream (BBC 1 and Radio 1) and stuff for a much narrower audience (BBC 4 and Radio 3).
