Self
taught interest, several media courses, then 2 year BTEC in Game Design
(hurp durp) and starting a 3-4 BA in Computer Animation Arts and
possibly a masters in the same, though I'm not sure about that yet.
The
biggest issue with discussing art, design etc is that there's no real
clear boundary - an architect is a designer, and also an artist (be that
traditional, digital or 3D.)
To me, an illustrator is an
artist/designer with a clearly defined purpose, to create assets for use
in certain material and aimed at specific demographics. If they're a
photographer whose jop it is to produce cover pieces for something like
Heat magazine then they are an artist whose focus is in capturing
objects and individuals of female interest and portraying them in an
appealing light to said audience, wherein they may be assisted by a team
of others (concept, post-production etc.)
So, I'd say an
illustrator is someone who is professionally focused on specific
materials and mediums, and earns their living thus. They are also an
artist - the way I think of it:
A - Z is an artist. B - D is an illustrator. It's incorporated and yet seperate. |
