My very first was an email mailing list for sense-o-milla mill jovovich fansite. You send an email to the hosts address and the email is automatically forwarded to everyone else on the list, and you get all of their emails. It works just like a forum but all if the posts are emailed to you. This was around '97.

I only ever went to sites related to video games I was playing, even though I'd hang around in the off-topic sections more than the actual game boards.

So I hung out there for about three years, sadly most of the good posters slowly started posting less and less until almost all gave up and left. Including me, because it had become really slow and really shit (like Maddox's updates ironically).
This was about 5 years ago now, I go back occassionally for old times' sake and there's only two of those guys still there. How they tolerate posting on such a shit forum I don't know.

Oh, the memories. I still hang around a bit, but not like I used to.

Went back to neopets and nostalgia'd. Now I have to play Hannah and the Pirate Caves and Volcano Run. Those games were the shit. Goddamnit, /r9k/.

Started off with roleplay trolling and irritating the fuck out of the members. Then I ended up having a jolly good time posting there constantly. Made my first few online friends there and ended up with an online relationship of sorts for a few months before subsequently suffering an emotional breakdown over both that and other more shameful personal dilemmas.

On the other hand that was also the forum that got me back in school and away from the delinquents I was in a remedial program with. I started realizing everyone on that forum was a fairly well-adjusted member of society aiming for a college degree instead of a warehoused bum, and I had to ask myself, "why the fuck aren't I normal like that?"
That board got me re-adapted into human society, no fucking joke.

I remember when forums were big there were no trolls, only "flamers". And almost all boarsa had a "flame room" or some sort of shit like that.
4chan is the rightfull heir to those flame rooms.
