I thought it was an ok talk. Keep in mind that TED has strict time constraints. However, I think I could have done better. Not to sound cocky, but I would have explained the evolution of memes better and included rickrolling the Mets, etc.

Then I would have said something more sociological like how although /b/ might sound like homophobic kids calling everyone fags, actually 4chan is pretty nice to real gay people and has many legit threads about gay stuff (unlike 99.999% of male-oriented media).

Also I would have not said I want to be an urban planner.

Yeah, he comes across as awkward, but you have to think about how hard it is to explain 4chan to a broad audience of people who've never heard of it in 5 minutes without horribly offending everyone. We're used to it, but there's a lot of really weird cultural stuff - like you say, calling everyone fags but being generally gay-friendly is a good example of something that seems perfectly reasonable to 4chan regulars but isn't easy to explain to someone without it sounding like you're trying to cover up rampant homophobia.

    >> Anonymous 06/03/10(Thu)22:28:34 No.9310141

I'm not gay friendly. I hate fags. One of the reasons I hate fags is because they won't simply let you not like them as a person. If you dislike someone who is gay, they make it about them being gay, and they ALWAYS win in their minds.

Plus, gay people are fuckin weird. Maybe not when they are young, but have you ever seen an old fag? They look like eunuchs. Also, NPH is confused as hell, and as such, is confusing. Like a spaz, he doesn't know where he is at any given moment. Ever watch that guy? People can say that homosex is about love, but if it were then sex would have nothing to do with it. People need to stop thinking the way they are told to think. IT IS WEIRD and if you just say that out loud people think you are hating on gays.

Exactly. This would be one of the best things to present to a non-chan audience. Unfortunately m00tles is just starting college so (ironically) he hasn't learned to think as broadly as most of his userbase.

I would have put up the word "fag" and said "here is an offensive word" when talking about free speech and anonymity. Then I would have shown all the -fag suffix words. Newfag, oldfag, etc, and then say "the word is so used the the derogatory connotation is so divorced that you actually get homosexuals on the board identifying themselves as 'gayfags'". The slur that is so horrible in the real world has lost all it's power on 4chan

That's is the sad truth about 4chan. People only know 4chan because of /b/ and its memes because it's the mainstreamed portion of the website. But not for the rest of the stuff 4chan has to offer, and not for it's true origins of the website. If moot clearly explained what 4chan really is, the audience would not understand.

I agree. First, rules 1 & 2 make no sense in that context, because he was talking about /b/. Second, no one knows what it means and he didn't talk about the secretive nature in any way (or about Fight Club). Third, it forced him to call it "b" and sound retarded.

And finally, rule 34 is funny and all but when you cant show an example, or even say something to allude to something there is porn of, then why bother?

I mean, fuck. Imagine explaining this to your older college professor. Sure, he can learn, but you still have to prepare him for the full explanation by giving him baby steps. Rich was able to do that, AND was able to get across some of the bigger picture.

Maybe that is for the best

Like it or not, a lot of 4chan boards have a deeply ingrained community.

Take /tg/ for example, they produce a metric fuckton of original content for campaigns, they have written several codex books, and have running quest threads that are literally 50+ threads of history

A huge in-rush on a board like that would really cripple the magic of the place I think.

Instead now, the people that go to /tg/ are people that really like /tg/ stuff to the core

Maybe it's not as strong with the other boards, but it's there too

The same concept can also also apply to the word "faggot" on this site. That word is often used for 'idiot', 'moron', 'people', 'person', depending on the context. That word stemmed from /b/tards using that when 4chan was first created, and since /b/tards eventually matured out of /b/ and moved onto the other imageboards of 4chan, it has used so much that it's negative meaning does not exist in 4chan whatsoever.

If anything, the sexual part of both kinds of relationships is hormonal, but you gotta admit, the hormones are confused in a gay sexual relationship. That is what I mean when I say that oldfags end up looking like eunuchs. You can literally look at them and see that.

Obviously I mean an online store. No one would need to "finance" it. You could partner with a store that already makes t-shirts and print stuff, draw up some simple designs - maybe even have a "make your own" thing - and sell them. All of the manufacturing and shipping would be 3rd party, m00t would just have to make the designs (or get someone to) and take a share of the profit.

No that would suck. 4chan is, to my mind, free speech purified and refined into it's purest form known. You can't commodify free speech. Also, transferring net shit into IRL is fucking lame. I'd lose a lot of repsect for moot if he endorsed faggots running around with longcat t-shirts shouting memes to each other.

Jesus, that must have been uncomfortable.

They should have had a couch or something up there. It's inconsiderate to just have your guest standing up on a wide open stage like that completely exposed to an entire audience. Would make anyone nervous.

I've talked about the dynamics of anonymity in a few of my psych classes... Works well in discussions on motive, impulse, etc...

I also gave a presentation on the Army of God. Their website shows a shit-ton of pictures of aborted fetuses, which can be pretty graphic. Professor kind of freaked out when he found out I had been setting up my presentation before seeing a filtered version of it, which blocks all of the images. He was afraid I would be disturbed... XD XD XD

I have never seen the ED store or cheezburger actually, but the point is that there are online sites selling things created on 4chan. If m00t just put a store on the site, it would be a shit ton more profitable than those sites because it is at the source.

Alternatively, he could embed an already existing store into 4chan for a cut of the profits. They obviously don't feel the need to advertise here because they get enough traffic, but if they were right on the site profits would probably double or triple at least so it would be good for both parties.

That being said, a store would be very profitable and a good idea for the site, even if it did cause a bunch of kids to be running around with FBF/SAP/LOLcat shirts

Ended waaay to abruptly. He should have spent less time talking about LOLRAIDS and more time talking about freedom of speech and how 4chan is a good example of that. He spent about 9 minutes talking about memes and raids and then at the end just sort of went "so freedom of speech is important. The end."

It seems like he kind of had to slap something together short notice, but even then, moot, think about what the point of your talk is. The point is the importance of freedom of speech with a specific focus on how identity-based websites like Facebook are becoming the norm so places where people can hide behind anonymity and be truly honest and free are more important then ever. Contrast 4chan with other "social networking" sites. Talk about how memes evolve and how 4chan is a living, breathing example of not only the creation of memes but how they seep into popular culture.
