It is my view that one more major terrorist attack will be enough for the US and many other western governments to enact laws that destroy most civil liberties in the name of homeland security. The Patriot Act 2.0.

I DO NOT believe in the 'new world order', and do not think this is some major conspiracy to create a one-world-government police state. But rather the fault of shortsighted politicians.

Case in point: Ausfailia customs can now search your hard drive at the border in the name of homeland security

    Do you agree?
    >> Anonymous 05/22/10(Sat)08:52:46 No.9064495
yup, 9/11 changed the face of western politics; the attack's been used to pass numerous liberty shrinking laws on the pretext of terrorism. feels bad man
    >> Anonymous 05/22/10(Sat)08:53:54 No.9064511
    like what.

please op, give us all examples of all these civil liberties that would be destroyed after such an event.

stop and search would be widened,

free speech would be further restricted (free speech/protest zones)

    wiretapping/email reading powers widened

    sounding bad yet?

Nah. I think people are pretty aware of whats happening and there would be a major backlash.

A "9-11 redux" would not be nearly the shock it was the first time around.
    >> Anonymous 05/22/10(Sat)09:02:37 No.9064589
perhaps we might get serious about who the terrorists are. we might stop frisking grannies at the airports and instead focus on the moon rock worshipers.

No, Ausfailia customs can now search your hard drive at the border in the name of keeping child porn out of Australia. Which is arguably even more retarded, but then it doesn't fit your conspiracy theory.
    >> Anonymous 05/22/10(Sat)09:04:45 No.9064609
Didn't Islamic terrorists really just want the US to stop supporting Israel?

Cheer up amerifags, your Jew masters will never let them win on that front. Not if they have to grind every liberty you have into the dirt.

Lol you can't stop terrorism by stripping people of these liberties. The best way to stop terrorism is to stop raping all their countries and getting them mad in the first place.
    >> Anonymous 05/22/10(Sat)09:17:56 No.9064755
Seeing as all of their attempted attacks were, well, attempts I think we won. They failed, they aren't as elaborate, I don't know why we're still in iraq, quit asking.

the immigration card will say 'are you carrying pornography?'

if you are carrying legal pornography, you can tick yes, and you may have to show it to them. If you tick no, they may search your HD.
    >> Anonymous 05/22/10(Sat)09:52:57 No.9065093
This isn't the result of weak-minded politicians, politicians only do what they think will continue to keep them in office. This is their driving motivation.

It's a weak citizenry that believes the government can actually protect them from terrorism by restricting their civil liberties. I agree with you though, we're just one attack away from trading it all away.
    >> Anonymous 05/22/10(Sat)09:54:34 No.9065102
Our government (dutch) only decreases our civil liberties because the USA keeps asking. American paranoia is more to blame then the terrorists themselves really.

I swear every single privacy invading security measure has been introduced on request.
    >> Anonymous 05/22/10(Sat)09:56:58 No.9065123
    >>9065093
Correct. Politicians actually only do things to support their positions.

And terrorists attacks were pretty good actually for their own interest.
They got a theme they can work on and direct the attention of the public to this theme from other important themes.
Also, they can satisfy the security and defence military at the same time.

As a politician i would be naiv if i wouldn't do this!

I (OP) feel that many politicians genuinely believe security measures will keep them safe. it is not just a function of winning votes. But that is a part of it. Thats why I'm pro 1 term limits for all public offices.

Yeah, my initial statement was a little simplistic. Politicans of course have agency, and presumably some of them are at least motivated to improve society rather than or in addition to aggrandizing themselves.
    >> Anonymous 05/22/10(Sat)10:06:12 No.9065201

I really hope that there will be further terrorist attacks.

Just so that i can see the civil rights futher restricted.

I'm afraid I have to agree with the OP, as a matter of fact that what the terrorists want, an overreaction. Instead of going after the culprits, they'll usually go after the citizens by practically abolishing their civil liberties. The main reason why this will happen because of the two things: The politicians who live on the Culture of Fear and the people who are powerless to do any real change.

the reason that freedoms are being taken away is because we can't be trusted with them

I have nothing to hide because I am not doing anything illegal.
    >> Anonymous 05/22/10(Sat)10:23:09 No.9065337
The purpose of terrorism is to spread terror.

Every time the US did ANYTHING in response to 11-9, it was another point proving the terrorists had won.

IF the US had of quietly reacted, enacted security measures and caught who did it... the terrorists wouldn't have won. But, that's not how it played out.

As for Ausfalia... they're searching for CP, not secret plans to blow up the opera house. If you don't have .jpg's of kids, you'll be fine

Possession (including personal use) of child pornography should not be illegal. It's the wrong way of handling the problem of child abuse. The costs of taking away this freedom are huge. It undermines everything our democracy is based upon: freedom of information, freedom of thoughts etc.

not at all. But I value our freedoms and I fear these cp laws make way for changes the people do not want (further loss of privacy etc.). Making possession of CP illegal creates the need for a way to search people's hard drives.
    >> Anonymous 05/22/10(Sat)10:54:02 No.9065617
They'd better have one of them fancy ass machines that can look into a hard drive that's been dropped from three feet high, having it's motor busted. Feels bad man.
