Why do most people refuse to educate themselves? They rather believe what someone else has told them and follow it blindly? I'm not talking about religion or some stalemate topic in robot hell. I'm talking about the people that believe that vaccines cause Autism. What fuck is this shit? Science has come a long way and people are still thinking like we're in the fucking dark ages.

Pic not related, just a fan of his work.

They do not want to learn about what really happens because if they did it will go against everything they were taught. Their beliefs are so ingrained that any argument or facts in the contrary will cause a knee-jerk reaction.

You also have to factor in how some people simply enjoy taking a minority side. Look at ICP, they made a ton of cash off it.

This series of videos is about religion but the psychological theories discussed apply equally to all kinds of beliefs:

Its a kind of denialism. People would prefer to have something to blame, and the empathy inducing stories of anti-vaccine feed on that. Unfortunately, cold, hard science isn't really able to compete, and scientists often come off as arrogant or aloof.

The correlation between Autism and the mercury-filled inoculations we used to get as babies was documented in Rolling Stones magazine, an enormous article that brought even more publicity to the subject.

Nowhere in the article was it mentioned that the needles were discontinued. I don't doubt that was on purpose. People don't often move if they're not in direct line of fire. "Someone else's babies got retarded because of something The Man approved of" ? Who fucking cares. "YOUR babies may get retarded!" Then people care.

However, the man who designed the mercury-filled inoculations IS immune to any repercussions due to any past decision involving those inoculations due to a rider on the patriot act, written in by the Senator who gets the highest contributions from drug companies. They're not protecting him for nothing.
