Or say much. I know that'll frustrate some. I can say that since I last spoke to you I've been reassigned to Iron Hill. I've been aboard for about three weeks. It's cramped, I could only bring what would fit in the .3x1 meter cubby above my bunk. After trying to post a bunch of times I was called in to speak with the pilot and some of the comms engineers who asked what I was using ETP for. I thought I'd had it but when I told them about this site and they had a look, they all thought it was pretty jokes. Better than expected, right? So I can post here again, and consistently as this monstrosity has an ETP node built right in (and everything else, except elbow room).

There's still stuff I can't share apparently. Figures like the crew compliment, descriptions of weapons systems or defensive mechanisms, that sort of thing. The reasoning given to me is that although it's a longshot, the redshirts may have access to ETP. I'm not sure how they'd use it to their advantage, but serving aborad Iron Hill is a privilege and I won't do anything that could get me reassigned.

So, what's the word on early habs? Google done with gOS yet? Do panels still need those stupid glasses to do 3D? What movies are popular?

    1. Iron Hill is a huge armored base on treads. It was only a rumor until pretty recently. First time I saw it was when it saved my unit at the autolabor compound.

    2. ETP is shorthand for Entanglement Transmission Protocol. It's how I'm able to post here, and read the replies.

    3. It's 2107 currently. Nearing the end of my tour of duty in 2108.

    4. Thirties. That's all you'll get out of me.

I haven't spoken with Siane since being assigned to Iron Hill. Everyone present that day was reassigned, so as to keep the project secret for a little while longer. I hope she doesn't think I'm ignoring her...

I did warn you about attempts at geoengineering, plans for which were in the formative stages when I first posted here and which you should have heard a lot more on since. Large technology companies organizing with governments to fuck with the atmosphere, that sort of thing. You were in over your head, didn't anticipate the consequences, and the rapid warming effect resulted. It's become synonymous with scientific hubris.

If you meant the civil war, that occurs immediately following the prewar conservative party's electoral loss in 2016.

It's sort of strange that you mention that. Considering every bloody attempt has been made by the organizers of those events to distance themselves from loons and violent activists.

They even go so far as to hold signs up above any provocateurs (neo-nazis, left-wing moles, that sort of thing.) who show up to point out to all present that they aren't part of the protest.

Nobody is advocating violent action, but if some lone wolf psychopath wants to do what he wants on his own and tie it to a movement, there's zilch anyone can do about it. That would be like blaming all democrats for waco or all republicans for Oklahoma city.

But whatever, conservatism ceased to be a intellectual movement when Buckley died. God rest his soul.

Iron Hill is basically a huge, mobile base on segmented treads. The treads themselves rise above the treeline. It's only remained secret for this long because it's also amphibious and was in the middle of an oceanic test run.

Ferries supposedly can reach a tenth of C, but most don't push it that far as they don't need to. The nuclear pulse drives are gradually being replaced with hydrogen fueled nuclear rockets of some kind, I don't know what the anticipated practical top speed is but I imagine it has to be comparable.

Most of us don't make it clear that we're posting from your future because we wind up getting swarmed with questions about the 2100s when most of us use ETP in the first place because we want to know more about the 2000s-2050s.

Because, according to the companies that provide ETP and the current state of knowledge about it, any changes made to the past take effect at the same speed everything else moves through time. It never catches up to the present. You could have countless alternate histories right on your 'heels', so to speak. A history where the CNPA formed in the fifites and won a pre-emptive war, not five minutes behind your reality. Lots of documentaries do an admirable job at visualizing how it works but it still makes my head explode.

I don't. It's slightly different every time. Sometimes I'll ask you guys about a historical event and I'll get one answer during one session, and a different answer the next session. There's no guarantee that the past I speak to during one session will be the same past I speak to the next. Likewise for you; some of the "me"s you've spoken with have probably been from slightly different futures.

Part of the difficulty with being your magic 8-ball is that hindsight is 20/20; there's not much I can tell you that you wouldn't have already thought of at some point, as the technological trends leading to most of the shit I describe could already be seen in 2010 and well before that. It'd be a bit like somehow telling someone from 1910 that electric cars would ultimately replace gasoline ones. Harder to believe in the 1950s I guess, so it does depend who you're telling, and when, but the point remains.

He can send us diagrams if he can get access to a ETP station or whatever that has enough bandwidth to do it.

I saw some like "stuck in the past" guide that told you how you could get modernized medicine and generate electricity. If you could explain that to an ancient greek philosopher we'd be having orgies with space aliens in the andromeda galaxy by now.

I'm pretty sure he can explain something like "Oh if you do this and this to a computer, it'll run a million times faster than the top end system you can get at best buy right now" or "If you modify this enzyme you can cure aging and cancer"

I can't tell a medieval knight how to modify genetic code, but I can tell him that in our bodies cells theres little things called chromosomes that decide whether you have blonde or black hair and maybe i can explain what cells are before he lops my head off calling me a satan.

Have they ever. I know nothing of military life outside of what I've seen in filmapps but I can tell there's no comparison. For the first three years of my tour of duty I was stationed aboard a Unisec aerostat, one of two (one houses the field operators, the other drones/ammunition/equipment) and during that time I enjoyed amenities considerably nicer than anything I was used to before I enlisted. Memory gel beds in every crew cabin, impressors built right into the headrests, pressure showers that dry you in seconds after you wash, and we eat out of something very much like a vendor except most of the meal is prepared from dehydrated stores, instead of being pre-prepared frozen shit. It doesn't compare to what you'd get at a restaurant, but back when I was going through cumulative ed I ate out of my own vender most nights, so that was still a step up for me. The food aboard Iron Hill is even better, most of the greens are harvested fresh from the forest by repurposed drones whenever we stop somewhere.

What was the deal with religion and atheism at the time? Trying to imagine living in a US where that's a serious, contentious issue is beyond me. It's like trying to imagine yourself in the 1700s, having a polite conversation about the hereditary inferiority of nonwhite races. It was just casually accepted at the time, in the way that superstition was casually accepted in yours, but isn't overhearing people express sincere belief in magical beings and forces kind of surreal? How is that just like...a normal thing for you?

When people try to scientifically justify having a belief in a "higher power" or "greater intelligence", I can't help but pity them. In order to feel meaning or in a universe that may possibly be without any inherent significance, people of our time cling to these beliefs as a form of comfort. It really is sad, but I hope that one day the light of science will transform the perceptions of the world.

I find it incredibly irritating and depressing that religion is such a guiding force in our society. Willful ignorance seems to be a growing trend and it really bothers the shit out of me. It seems to me that it mostly stems from a general lack of education, or decent education that supports the development of a critically thinking mind.
    >> Future !GUYX/6jp3w 05/14/10(Fri)00:29:21 No.8913897

Not really. People study religions out of interest but almost nobody believes the magical parts. The main reason for that is that most of the diehard believers saw something sinister in the mass migration into cohabs, as they required a small implant as part of registration. The overlap between the people who refused to move inside and the support base of the CNPA was probably near total. Consequently if you were to meet someone these days who professes belief in angels and demons and spirits and so on, they're probably wearing red and shooting at you.

    I love you Futureguy.

I don't like the religious importance of the day. Typically, I've experienced that you can divide atheists into two categories. There are those who don't believe in a higher power because they have a limited grasp of the universe, of those who don't believe in a traditional "god" because of their grasp of the universe. I don't believe in any higher power in the traditional religious sense (that is, a watchful guardian gazing longingly over his creation), but I can accept that there is the possibility of humankind being created by some external force. What that might be, I don't have any idea. It sure as hell doesn't telepathically speak to me when I kneel down and clasp my hands together.

in reality, most people wont push their beliefes on you nor do they care about most things as long as it isnt all that public (such as the homosexual issues and pornography etc).

also, im shooting myself in the foot here, but im a Christian. i wont try to explain the whos or whys here, as it gets no where on 4chan, but ill just say its important to me.

the whol 'aethiest vs religion' thing is only an issue to those who are either insecure with their beliefes or edgy teens who want to be LOL SO COOL about being an aethiest.

While i cant personally imagine a lack of God, i have no issues personally with those who do. People should be free to have their own beliefes and not feel threatened for having them or even openly admitting them- as long as your ok with accepting others in return (will continue)

We've grown up around it. I may not be religious, but I have religious friends, and even a friend that believes in ghosts.

I usually smirk at the ghosts thing, because it's in our culture, or in my experience of our culture that the supernatural ghosts and such do not exist. Yet with god it is different, we grow up with the idea of a god and so someone expressing their belief in it isn't far fetched.

I was brought up going to church, but when I reached an age where I was able to think for myself, I eventually saw through it. I can tell you though, it is surreal. I've seen people standing on the sides of the road holding signs reading, "repent" or "turn to christ", and it just kind of baffles me. I don't understand how they cannot see through it.

I'm sure it has to do with children believing whatever their parents tell them, as religion usually always runs in families.

Another aspect being that people look out in to the world, see all the damage and harm we've done to the planet and each other, and see humans as inherently flawed, and needing salvation.

As an 'atheist'(a word I dislike) I've had many discussions with religious folks. Some members of my family are still Bible banging believers. Their faith is fueled by a need to believe. They want to feel specially connected to the powers of the universe and shit. And believing that makes them feel good. It's like a placebo effect

Is there some special comfort you derive from your beliefs? I wasn't raised in any religious tradition. I was never explicitly told they were wrong but when we studied them in transitional and cumulative ed it was always in the context of cultural forces that shaped the prewar political landscape. Religion must have some emotional perks, I've heard that, I just can't experience it as I can't believe in the claims. Maybe the grass is greener on the other side of the fence, so to speak, but I've always imagined it must be really satisfying.

I have friends who are Jewish, Aeithiest, Buddhist, Catholic (i am a Protestant), Homosexual, and the like.

I try to believe in what Jesus did- went with everyone, and accepted them. i try not to hold judgement, as i cant expect those not in my faith to be upheld to my own convictions.
    >this is one of the reasons mormons/ JW tend to annoy people- they just shove it all down your throat (not to say people of my own sect dont- but i try to not).

if people ask me, ill answer honestly. I have learned you can dissagree without being a jerk about it.

Most people, my friends and those i know at least, do not care what you believe in. sure, some debates can get heated (such as abortion/ 'in God we trust' on money and what not) but in the end those are rather little things in the big picture and their is no point ostrasizing one anothe rbecause of them.

I may belive in a Heavan, Hell, God, Satan, Angels, and the like- but im not going to damn you forever because you dont. thats your perogative and you can come to any decisions you want to. just dont bash on mine for no apparent reason.

For religious people, they "know" how the universe works and is structured. They are secure in the "fact" that there is nothing to fear, for there is always god. Of course this is preposterous, but being raised with a majority of people having beliefs makes it seem much less ridiculous.

    comfort? not realy.

i couldnt tell you what i 'gain' from the religion- besides mabey a better grasp of ancient middle east and some history.

Yes, im passionate about my faith- but its less of a 'group' thing and more of a 'personal' way to live as jesus put forth. which i find pretty spectacular (even a non christian, whether they believe he existed or not, would admit Jesus was a pretty cool guy).

also, i think Paul hurt the early church sometimes by confusing them. he wrote to individual churches, then those works were taken at face value for everyone with out any before hand knowledge as to why he was writing them.
his misunderstood writings ruined a good chunk of history, and continue to do harm today (see 'God hates fags' group)

oh, not to samefag the thread up, but the christian guy again...
to shed some light on the whole 'wouldnt put a chip in them to move into habs'

the rationale for this is simple- in revelations, the end book of the bible where basically everyone dies/end of the world/etc; the reign of satan is herald by a mark of the hand or forehead.
most take this, this day in age, to mean a chip of some form that a satanic government uses to follow/control its populace. many popular books/movies (such as left behind) have followed this idea, even though the mark is ambiguous in the original writings and, like the rest of the book, could be completely litteral or anything in-between.
its a toss up, but thats why christians didnt move into habs.

FutureBro, have humans been able to clone or engineer other sapient beings?
Sorry if you've been asked this before, but perhaps it falls into your question of what's it like to believe in God or magical things
I look at as human's ways of making sense of what they fear and don't understand.
Where do we come from and what is our purpose?
Perhaps humans don't have a purpose, but we came from something. I think people use religion to answer that.
Perhaps "purpose" is the wrong term to use as well. What happens when we die, the religious would like to think our existence carries on somewhere else.
