hey /r9k/, what do your parents do with their spare time?

Mine just go straight to their own comps after they come home from work. I've always felt a little depressed about this.

It's because 2 to 3 generations have been focused primarily around television for entertainment, information, and everything.
    Society is braindead.

    I wouldn't know. I don't live with them.

Hurr durr, though. I do know that my Mother ends up sitting in her chair reading old cliched mystery novels about old ladies, and my Father sits in his niche listening to overly-conservative radio anchors and watching old British comedy. That's just how it's been.
    >> Anonymous 05/08/10(Sat)23:12:55 No.8825848
My dad's really into windsurfing. He's always checking wind forecasts, and if there's ever a decent wind on the weekend he'll be out at the lake. Then he spends a lot of his time at home watching tutorial videos and reading about different boards (he has four or five now) and talking to other local windsurfers on some forum he found.

As for my mom, I think she's been reading quite a bit lately. She seems really interested in the history of medicine; she keeps telling me interesting stuff she's read about the bubonic plague and early hospitals and that sort of thing.

    Right here.
My dad will get on this shit and play keep playing until 4am sometimes.
He's good enough that each game lasts about an hour, so that means if he plays it for 10 hours, he's played 10 games. It's caused him to be late for work sometimes.
He's a perfectly intelligent man, he just loves this stupid game.
I feel so ridiculous when I try and get him to ease back a bit.

My mom has 2 days off per week and works 2 jobs. Generally in her spare time she's on her laptop or watching shit on TV like Dancing with the Stars and Doctor Who. She spends her days off cleaning the house, doting on my lazy little brother, reading books and lying in bed worrying... and also doing the yardwork (although she claims this last one is really euphoric to her, for some weird fucking reason). She rarely goes out with anyone besides me or my brother, and she loves going on elaborate shopping sprees despite our lack of money and has a horrendous case of hoarding.

My dad's in jail. From what he tells me during our once-a-week 15-minute phone calls, he spends his time reading and walking.

I feel bad for both of them. :(

he sometimes take s breaks from it and reads or something, but then the bug will bite again and BAM up 'till 4 playing the game.

Maybe I'm being too harsh on him, but it sure feels like stagnation to me. Okay if he likes the vidya, but try some other games, man.

He also sometimes goes on tetris binges and "must" beat the <3 setting on the old gameboy version (it's a mode unlockable by pressing some key when it boots up. Essentially the normal game, but as if you were constantly pressing down.) before he can leave the bathroom.

I sometimes worry that he's border-line OCD. But I only worry about this in my darkest moments and don't seriously think he's got any kind of disorder.

My dad is a type A personality, so hes always busy, typically keeping up with his medical reading or researching the stock market. The closest thing I see him do for fun is occasionally watching some TV or going for bicycle rides. He does like to go out and see movies sometimes too.

My mom is pretty busy doing housework, but when she doesn't have anything to do she tends to watch tv, read the news, or play wow (she started up to try and better understand my hobby, now I dont play and she does).

Well dad works 5 days a week 730 to 6 monday to friday.

Mums not had a job since 1989 (she quiet her job while she was pregnant to me) and she browses the internet all day and hangs out with her friends.

I guess it makes up for lost time cause she was pregnant at young age with me.

Believe it or not, this system works. mum raised us kids (I'm 20 and my sister is 17) and she deserves to go out and shit.. us kids were little shits to her and dad.

Dad just potters around home on this day off,, fiddles with the car, takes his boat out. Or watches tv or sleeps.

Mum and dad are happily married. They got married at 21. They are both about to turn 46.

My relationship with my dad isn't peachy... but more because of his personality than his job. He is a family doctor so he doesn't work crazy hours or anything.

He has a pretty decent amount of free time but every 5 years or so he has to redo his board exams and he spends ALL of his time studying for that for a few months. Like I said though, my dad isn't happy if hes not working... so he doesn't really have "free" time.

I will say the few times in my life I have been really hurt/sick, knowing my dad was a doctor (and a great one at that) made me feel really safe.

My mom was in med school and residency from when i was born until i was 7. I saw her once a month for a weekend until i turned 7.
Then she was around but not really, we never did much together except on her vacation time.
I wonder if I missed out on some parenting, because I love my mom and we get along well when she's around, but I feel like our relationship should be so much more than it is and that her absence and constant need to be at work has driven a bit of a wedge between us.

But damn, everytime I've been sick she has been worth her weight in gold. And I definitely appreciate the one time i broke my thumb in 10th grade but refused to believe it was broken and she forced me to go to the hospital while i was desperately trying to play age of empires 2 without my right hand. I'm sure my hand would be fucked up if I hadn't went, and I'm glad she knew.
