Any other young folks here disgusted by the way most people our age act? Seriously. Drinking, parties, drug promotion, socialist attitudes, reckless driving, loud talking, obnoxious behaviour in public, promiscuity, excessive profanity, gambling, dishonesty, out-of-control spending, and worst of all, the infamous "I am greater than death and completely immortal" delusion. Wake-up-call imminent.
    >> Anonymous 05/01/10(Sat)19:23:22 No.8707726
I agree, OP. The depravity of young people is just disgusting. Hopefully when their lives implode, they'll grow up.

I agree OP, my roommate is a prime example of this and I'm the complete polar opposite. She goes out and drinks and throws up and is generally promiscuous and...dumb, while I choose to hang out soberly with a few select friends. Not that I'm saying I'm better than her, but damn the girl is a train wreck, and I'm pretty sad that the majority of my age group does even worse than her.

I find parties absolutely retarded, well the ones that most of the youth today participate in.. I go to a different kind of party that consist of close family friends and I find those a lot of fun.. The men sit in one room and talk, women sit in their room (usually close to the kitchen).. and the young people usually chill together somewhere..

And I don't think I'm autistic or whatever you labels you guys like to lash out on the more sane people.. My family and others seem to do well without recreational drugs, etc..etc..

No kidding. This society is going down the shitter in so many ways I sometimes have very little hope. Most young people are hedonistic, opportunistic and unambitious, and have no values whatsoever. They have no moral principles other than "whatever works", thus the overwhelming socialist tendencies. Few, though, really understand how this world works; what makes humans prosper and societies flourish. They are brought up to believe that as long as we have a huge, monopolistic, violent institution watching every step we make, that society will continue to progress, that we will continue to be able to invent things, improve technology, discover more of the world.. What they fail to realize is that this very institution, government, is today the greatest threat to our future. Everything it does impedes our prosperity. Every regulation, every tax, every tariff, every program, brings us one step further away from a more prosperous future. Yet young people believe that if we just put the right people in the state, if we just tinker with the right regulations, we will make everyone happy. If we just stop the "evil capitalist pigs", force the ignorant masses to use government-approved lightbulbs, invent new rules for what people can do with their own hard-earned money, install CCTV on every street corner, outlaw everything the majority doesn't like.

The reality, though, is that economically, the world is about to have the coldest shower in a long, loooong time. First, the bad businesses failed. Then, the bad banks failed. Now, the bad states are failing (Greece, Portugal) and they're going to take a good number of good states with them. And what almost no one understands, is that every single failure is because of the very rules and regulations that the government designed to prevent it.

don't knock it til you've been there. Now I'm not mad at you or saying that society is perfect, but I'm going to venture out on a limb and say you've never really experienced these things before.

people doing these things are probably more mature than you. they see society, and then do these things as a means of escaping the low parts of human life. life can really suck, why waste your youth not having fun.

call them shallow, call them stupid. in reality, they are people just like yourself. you aren't better or smarter. you live in your own little world where all the rules are made by you, and you sit back in the comfort of your parents labor and have nothing better to do than criticize others and create pseudo social theories.

lol, because eugenics was an actual movement in the early 20th century based upon darwin's work, and not a made up bastardization of the idea of natural selection, amirite?

Let's be real, Darwin was dead before the term "eugenics" was even coined, and, if the movement was even real, it was started by his cousin who didn't understand Darwin's work but thought he did.

Darwin himself wrote that humans can't ignore the sympathy that prevents eugenics from being implemented, or else we run the risk of losing what sets us apart from animals.

    1. Human intelligence is largely hereditary.

    2. Civilization depends totally upon innate intelligence. Without innate intelligence, civilization would never have been created. When intelligence declines, so does civilization.

    3. The higher the level of civilization, the better off the population. Civilization is not an either-or proposition. Rather, it's a matter of degree, and each degree, up or down, affects the well-being of every citizen.

    4. At the present time, we are evolving to become less intelligent with each new generation. Why is this happening? Simple: the least-intelligent people are having the most children.

    5. Unless we halt or reverse this trend, our civilization will invariably decline. Any decline in civilization produces a commensurate increase in the collective "misery quotient."

Yeah, I understand what eugenics is, and what it's principles are. I've read Galton, Huxley, Darwin (not that it applies too much here).

But you're right, because society has really gone downhill since the early 1900s when we gave up on eugenics.

And because the eugenic movement wasn't effectively a mechanism for the moneyed aristocracy to oppress the lower, less-educated class.

oh wow this post just did it for me, massive generalization ftl

this whole thread is bullshit. OP is partly buthurt cause he isnt doing any of that stuff. But at the same time he has a point, in the sense that all of those activities (whch are being undertaken by young people) breed attitudes which linger on into adulthood. We end up with a significant segment of the population which places priorities on hedonistic pursuits and nothing else, and these people end up becoming a burden on those of us who place industry, productivity and success as higher priorities in our lives. People like OP recognize this fact and arent going to sit around and take it

I choose not to drink because I don't want to? I was raised in a home where there was never any alcohol.. I went to social events that had no alcohol, all the adults were sober. The only alcohol I ever saw was on TV and movies.. Fuck even today I'm not well acquainted with it... Sometimes the hallway in my dorm supposedly smells like alcohol, well at least that's what my friends say, but I can't fucking tell. I have no idea what it smells like!

As I said in my post, I am not making a judgement on whether her ideas were good or not.

However, in general, philosophers as a community like to discuss ideas and play around with them and critique each other before they just go ahead and release a book to an uncritical public who tends to accept anything in ink and hiss and snarl at anyone who DARES to challenge her "truth".

The key is having hard work, and having fun. You don't want to end up, knowing that you sat on 4chan for years on end while you could be doing something more fun. Nor do you want to think you pissed away your life's meaning getting fucked up for fun.

I know people that could of made something of themselves, but instead they go to jail over and over because of stupid drugs. They don't care about their life, besides living for the moment. And that's the problem.

There are a lot of schools of thought that think that at every instant a new you is being created and an old you is being destroyed.

This book is not one of them, but it's another I think everyone should read... It's called Einstein's Dreams, by Alan Lightman. Real good read, and deals with different concepts of time, and how too many people cling to the present or the past or the future. Just read it, it's awesome.

What's most important is self-improvement. Yes, you can 'be yourself' but still change and grow. That's called maturity.

That was dull and apart from the astronomical phenomena most likely wrong. I doubt it would take us 48000 years to reach that stage of development.

"I see no hope for the future of our people if they are dependent on
frivolous youth of today, for certainly all youth are reckless beyond
words... When I was young, we were taught to be discreet and
respectful of elders, but the present youth are exceedingly
disrespectful and impatient of restraint" (Hesiod, 8th century BC).

It's mainly because most of you guys are a bunch of miserable cunts. It's hard to feel sorry for someone that blames everyone else for their problems instead of fixing it themselves...

    >fucking bitches and whores man why am I still a virgin at 25 what a bunch of vapid sluts

Anyways my rides here, have fun guys.

    >Einstein's Dreams, by Alan Lightman. Real good read, and deals with different concepts of time

    DO WANT.

Hesiod would probably break down and cry, and retreat huddled into a dark room, were he to see the state of humanity's culture and manners alive today.

More of society becoming dependent on government assistance, economic failure, public education systems being dumbed down too pass the less intelligent students...for starters.

But in all these don't we see improvement, really?

Our children may have a hard time passing schools, but aren't we as a society smarter than 100 years ago?

I reject that government control (dependence is a loaded word) over certain programs is necessarily a bad thing. I think roughly half of the people you'd talk to would see it as progress.

As for economic failure, meh. Shit happens, and it would appear to me that a few people are responsible for that fuckup. Although I would concede that the fact that the average American spend 120% of his income is a worrisome problem.

So read it, seriously it is fucking awesome. So well written, and it evokes much more thought and emotion than I ever thought. The book literally gave me chills, and it's something that I will probably read again and again.

    >Culture and manners

Okay, but isn't that the trend of things? The older generations are always upset at how "improper" their children are. Sorry Mom, sorry Dad, sorry Great^50-Grandpa Hesiod, but these aren't the old times anymore.

I'm not too worried about manners and societal standards and norms.

You know people like you, on both sides, makes life seem very very miserable.
You either go one way or the other.
I guess I'll just get that Missionary job.
I get to travel the world and socialize with many different people WHILST upholding my beliefs and moral code, and live what I atleast perceive as a dignified life.
It may not be to others, but let them believe what they feel best.
I try to do the same.

People are selfish, sadistic, false, licentious, gluttonous, etc. etc.

    THIS IS NOTHING NEW

It sucks horribly but it's nothing new. And, by the way, you suck just as bad as all the faggots you hate =)
    >> Anonymous 05/01/10(Sat)22:58:03 No.8710957
Why are people that "live the life" so aggressive about it?

I like to read about history - do I tell people how much they are missing out by not doing it? Of course not, I really dont care.
